No, I can't speak Afrikaans beyond swear words myself.

And it's fine if your character doesn't know, since most non-Dutch/Belgians or Southern Africans would have no idea.

I remember, vaguely, when TV came wholesale to India. It was always there, mind, but there was a point where it actually became popular and big and accessible for the masses, which was decades after it first showed up. That was quite a fascinating time.

I once did a study with one of our partners in Hong Kong about our supply chain. Some of our ingots were mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, shipped Portugal, transshiped to Sweden where they were smelted, sent to the UK for reforging with an additive, sent to Portugal for transshipment, sent to one of our warehouses in Spain, then sent back to Portugal when we needed them, then shipped to the States (Atlanta), sent via train to a hub in Pittsburgh, then finally sent to us.

And that's legal transporting of goods in a globalized economy. My mind would probably cry if it knew through what convoluted patterns black-market goods went.
