She snapped awake and tried to sit up, but only succeeded in jerking to a stop about a quarter-inch later. The cold length pressing against her back made her wince, and she glanced over her shoulder at the metal pole. She was securely bound, it seemed.
Dora craned her head awkwardly and examined her surroundings. It was a fairly large warehouse, mostly empty. She’d been under for quite a while, as the nerd was gone.
The nerd. She snorted. Some nerd. He’d pulled some kind of weird disappearing act as she closed her eyes against a sudden wind-driven flurry of snow. The next thing she knew, she was here in this dank warehouse with a throbbing head. She felt the stickiness of dried blood on her forehead. Fortunately, he appeared to have left. One bright spot.
Some of the questions he’d been asking - those she remembered - had been completely off-the-wall.
“The Gods of Outer move with the Appointed Marks, yes? And does the Song of Beginning still warble in the Twisted Spirals?”
“Where is the Striped Phantasm? Has it absorbed the Stooping Bandit?”
“The Glassy Exciter, he is gone...but what to do next?”
They’d made for very strange dreams, in the forced slumber she’d taken as he knocked her out again. She’d have to tell Giovenith. And her lighter was no longer weighing down her pocket.
She growled. He’d pay for that one.
The scrape of metal on metal resounded above her head. A soft thump announced a new arrival. Something moved across the structure. More bumps. A shadow flickered across one of the high windows and a hand pressed against it.
Ogoti, still attired only his Lungi, lay flat against the snow covered tin. He applied more pressure to the glass and the window gave. The frame and pane rocked downward on their hinges and clattered against the wall.
The old god pushed himself further out and bent over to peer inside. His head, upside down, blocked out the daylight. He frowned.
“Well, if I’d known you’d go through such lengths to avoid having a drink with me,” he smiled but didn’t bother to complete the joke. “Want some help?”
Dora looked up in surprise. Though it wasn’t as if she could do much else.
“If you’re willing, I won’t argue,” she replied, her drawl tentative. “Sorry about that, by the way. I do owe you a round, don’t I? In fact, it’s a shame I don’t have powers over weather, or I’d have sent a rainy check. Sorry, I’m rambling. I don’t like being confined.”
“Ramble away, my dear. It lets me know you’re still alive.”
Ogoti closed his eyes. He didn’t sense anything – or Nothing – approaching. Getting off the roof and to the door would be a pain in the ass in his current form, especially considering the warehouse height. He cringed at the only option available but decided there wasn’t any other recourse.
His skin paled and then tinged green. He seemed to elongate like molten wax as he slipped through the small opening, the blue cloth rectangle drawn along with him. The goo dropped, temporarily forming a ball in the air, and landed on the hard concrete with a squelchy slap. It reformed, drawing upwards in a spite that then cracked and warped into a humanoid shape. His physical features returned as did his skin color. Bane would only have picked up a sense of death rather than any magic use.
“Alright Dora,” he wrapped the material around his waist and approached her. His hands tugged at the cords binding her to the pole. “Let’s get you out of this mess.”
His words chilled her, more than the cold air now swirling through the small opening and joining the only slightly warmer air in the warehouse. It was fortunate, she supposed, that Ogoti's octopus-like method of entering the building helped to distract her. That could be quite useful in more than one way, she thought. As tough as she liked to appear, it was a nice change of pace to play the damsel in distress. She'd definitely done the god a disservice.
"Once more, with feeling," Dora answered, feeling the ropes beginning to give way. "I hope getting back here wasn't too much trouble...?"
“I took a wrong turn at Albuquerque,” he smiled. He was altogether relieved that her face didn’t show any traces of revulsion. Ogoti lacked Swith’s panache and Klaus’ ludicrous style. Grandfather, like his avatar, was nothing more than an ugly blob.
Ogoti cast aside the last cords and rubbed circulation into Dora’s wrists. “Follow me. We’ll leave through the side door and portal. There’s going to be a few stops along the way and some backtracking. Bane may be an ass but he’s a lazy creature as well. He’ll give up after the first two jumps if he even follows at all.”
"Now you're just having fun, aren't you?" The orange-haired woman pushed away from the pole, relieved to be out of trouble. Taking his hand in both of hers, she nodded. "I'm ready whenever you are, to be away from here."
The trouble was over between them, she thought. Hoped? But his smile seemed to say the chance of a storm was low, and she was grateful for that. Trouble with Bane, though, would probably close in sooner rather than later. She didn't say anything, to avoid distracting him, and kept her face clear and open.
“Every single moment with you is fun.” He was sincere in that thought. Dora tended to chase away the cobwebs. She was a reminder that life was what you made of it.
It was neither the time or place but Ogoti felt it should be said. “I miss you, Dora. I know Katya needs you right now and I’m not jealous. I just really do miss your smile.”
He didn’t allow her to reply however. He took her hand instead and motioned to the door with a nod of his head. Snow was still falling outside and night would arrive soon. Bane was nocturnal.
Dora walked toward the door alongside him, hand-in-hand. That which drove her was sending her tumbling internally. She didn't know what to do. The talk with Giovenith had given her a focus, but Katya and Ogoti were now back and she was off-balance. With a last breath of warmer air before heading outside, she braced herself and nodded.
"I'm here," she said, letting herself fall back on what she knew. There were very many ways to interpret those two simple words, and she meant all of them. She squeezed his hand, ready to follow him on the next step of the adventure. There would be plenty of time to talk later, though, and she gave him one of the smiles he wanted to see.
Ogoti smiled encouragingly. “That’s the Dora I know and love.”
He paused at the door and spent a minute amount of energy to sense his surroundings once again. There was a potent source to the east. A Great Unclean One had manifested. A nullified hole was rocketing towards it.
“That’s our cue,” Ogoti murmured. He didn’t explain his words. Instead, he tightened his grip on Dora’s hand and wrestled the door open.
Heavy snow blanketed the alley. It reflected the fading sunlight and momentarily dazzled their vision. Ogoti pressed onward. His bare legs and simple woven beach shoes shuffled through the mess and formed a path for Dora to follow. His intent was to get further away from the warehouse before attempting to slip into a portal. There was no telling if Bane had set up a trap; Ogoti gained access to the warehouse roof previously by jumping from an adjacent building.
They trudged along for a block. He paused outside the entrance to an abandoned dress shop and looked up and down the street. Coast clear. He opened the door, pulling Dora along with him.
They stepped onto warm sand. Gulls, alarmed by their sudden appearance, chastised them with a chorus of angry yarks. Ogoti shut the door and it dissolved. Familiar huts welcomed them in the distance.
East of Bielefeld, Sato cloaked himself once again and made a hasty retreat into the woods where Klaus’ men were waiting. The small party fled into the shadows.
"And now, I believe I owe you a round of drinks, and maybe another for rescuing me?" Dora drawled, keeping her tone light despite the smear of blood marring her appearance. "There's a relatively open bar, if you like."

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

She lowered her head and went back to digging out the trench. It was starting to get hard, but she didn't mind the work; it was refreshing. Besides, she didn't have much else to do.

Cerillium wrote:"Rescue you? I simply crashed your party," Ogoti winked at the fiercely independent woman. She wasn't meant to be caged by a sense of indebtedness or obligation. Dora deserved to soar.
"A drink would it the spot however. It seems the chef has opened an establishment."
He tipped his face towards the sky as the plane approached and then snatched a flyer as it fluttered down. Serendipity. "Are you up for dinner? You can tell me how you came to be in that warehouse."

He wasn't as thick as she originally thought he was, even though he had proven that many times before. "Well, I'd love to go, and if Luce would too, maybe I can know a few things about a past lover, eh?" She grinned with a dopey air about her.
Torsiedelle wrote:"Oh, hey, Chrys.", Torii said to Chrys, "No, I wasn't put off by it. You actually kind of saved me, but thanks."
She broke into a grin, and looked the woman over for a second. "So, it's been a while, no? His have you been? Your sister?"

"Maybe a drink after dinner, if you're up for it?" she suggested.

Torsiedelle wrote:"Hmm!?", Torii gasped. Something had happened to Tasia?
"I hope Tasia's alright! She's awesome! Can I ask what happened later?", She said as they walked off. She started walking quickly to catch up, on her way to the dinner with them.
Meanwhile, Katya returned from her solitude and picked up Yoshi to head out to the dinner.

The sunlight intensified natural highlights in Dora's hair and cast her skin in a healthy glow which Ogoti thoroughly approved of. Her attire didn't match her surroundings however, and she was bound to overheat sooner or later. He offered to take her winter jacket."But of course! That is, after you'd acclimated. Would you like a sarong?"
There were many questions raging in Ogoti's mind, the foremost being Dora's emotional state. He was deeply concerned that Bane had done something which would leave her scarred. More concerns orbited these thoughts. Why had he selected Dora, a creature who lacked powers, and why had he not killed her outright? He was getting bold; Ogoti was unsettled by the notion. He'd wait to approach her with these questions. Chances were high that Bane hadn't fed her.

"Datus, would you kindly, get me the ball?" The boy nodded and ran after the ball. Moments later he retrieved the ball in hand.
"Just as suspected." He said as he took the ball from the boy's hand.
"I don't understand," Wren frowned as she watched Datus return. "You asked him to get it. He did."
She was pleased that he'd managed to do it without apparent physical discomfort. Still, she didn't know what Dr. Smith meant. The knowledge that he'd be able to remove the chip was a relief to her however.

The BranRiech wrote:"You know I'm talking about Dora, right?" Kei shrugged, again, confused herself by the antics of some of the Conservators. "You said something about Dora being drawn to me, and refused to say anything about it when I asked." She grinned once more, hoping that she'd finally be able to get the information out. "Maybe we can discuss that as we head over to dinner, eh?"
Torsiedelle wrote:"Yea...it was."
What was all that about? Tasia and Chrys had tensions, she knew, but....
She hooked her friend was alright. Torii liked Tasia a lot. Maybe she should clear her head later, too. Now, though, she had dinner! "Well, anyway, MB, let's go, shall we?", She said, starting a light jog off to the scene of the cooking and festivities.

"Sure! And a quick shower probably wouldn't be amiss, as well. I'm not exactly an epitome of high culture, but I don't believe showing up at a dinner party looking like I've just escaped a street brawl is appropriate," Dora said amusedly, oblivious to his concerns. "Blood, sweat, messy hair and all. I might be dinner, in fact, if the blood is too tempting for the raptors."

"Take the coin." He commanded.
Datus looked at him confused and asked, "Why?"
He sighed and then said, "Would you kindly, take the coin?" Within seconds, Datus, as if his second nature, snatched the coin from his hand without even thinking twice this time around. "Confirmed." He said as he gingerly took the coin from the boy.

"So if you ask him to kindly do something, he follows through with programming?" Wren asked. It was a curious way to go about it, but keywords weren't all that unreasonable. Some of her brethren used them to stop devices from running. Safety words, in that case.
She rubbed her cheek and stared at Datus. "It's not fair, Dr. Smith. It's just not fair to control someone this way. Can the chip be removed?"

Cerillium wrote:"Good point. I don't know if these huts have facilities. You're more than welcome to use a shower at the compound. Plenty of empty suites there, all with private entrances. No one would bat an eye." He gestured towards Swith's funky addition to the island.
"A little luxury, piping hot water, comfortable places to sunbathe, a lagoon, and a sea monster. Can't think of a better place to freshen up in before going to a Velociraptor party," he stated a bit facetiously. The building was tasteful but not suited to Ogoti's own tastes. "It's not so bad, really. The inside is as relaxing in appearance as the outside."

She assumed the two blockheads she was hanging out with were going to follow her, and at least hoped they were. She didn't want to arrive alone. The goddess barely knew the raptors, but hey, free food was something hard to turn down.

"He should have the right to choose where to place his loyalty, and that should be based on the worthiness of the ones asking for it." Wren crossed her arms and used her foot to knock about a small shell on the ground.
It just wasn't fair. Not fair at all. Wren was usually conservative on so many issues, but personal freedom wasn't one of them. Freedom was freedom, and brave men and women died so little kids like Datus had a chance at it, even if they were vat grown or some other weird stuff.
"Beside," she added, "You don't want someone asking him to kindly harm us or others."
