Only except that would be the turning point in the European theater. The Battle of Midway was the first battle that relied entirely on carrier support since the Battle of the Coral Sea. During the Battle of Midway, the US lost the USS Yorktown, to the Japanese IJN's loss of the Kaga, the Akagi, the Soryu, and the Hiryu.

As someone who is very well versed in WWII history, let me interject.

Midway was the first battle that the US could declare themselves the victor. This is largely in part by the valiant efforts of the USS Enterprise, of which the battle would have been lost without.

The Kaga & Akagi were basically Japan's best warships, and their sister ship & companion the Soryu and Hiryu were also lost at the battle. The Akagi specifically was basically the Enterprise of Japan: It was at Pearl Harbor AND Coral Sea, and led the attack at both Pearl Harbor and Midway.

However, the Enterprise was basically the only ship that left the battle unscathed, and Midway took multiple months to recover from on both sides. While it can be said that Japan's loss at Midway led to the end of the war, in a way it can also be said that the US's losses at Midway led to the war lasting so long.
