Right now we're in the 23rd century, between 2400 and 2300 BC.

Getting saltpeter from manure isn't an easy process anyway though; you have to combine manure with the right proportions of charcoal and wood, leave it for about a year, keep it constantly wet with urine (for the nitrogen to combine into nitrate) and turn it over at carefully paced intervals in order for it to produce saltpeter crystals in usable quantities. You then need to leech the saltpeter out of the morass bias scourging with very hot water, and only then will you have several grams of usable saltpeter for combination into black powder.

You have to have a very obsessed very crazy man who very specifically got a lot of help and time on his hands.

Damifino. The historical record has no idea.

I'd assume it was a very slow trial and error refinement of the process, evolving out of the extraction of saltpeter from bat guano. Saltpeter used to be worth many many times it's weight in gold due to the rarity of naturally occurring extraction sites, so I'm assuming some crazy merchant was like "hey, bat excrement is kinda like ours" and slowly over many generations developed the process enough to be able to make bank selling his "shit flowers".

I guess. But that means everything would have to be the exact same for gunpowder to be invented in the same region by the same people. Because we have started to rewrite history, very little is 100% assured.

What could lead to someone combining saltpeter (normally obtained in tiny impure crystals from dung heaps) with charcoal and sulfur and then lighting it is beyond me.

I've heard some Chinese alchemists were funded by the state to make a potion that would give people back their youth. Eventually, they ran out of ideas and decided to just randomly mix every substance known to man in every possible way until they find the right combination... and that's how they stumbled upon gunpowder.

That sounds hilarious, but implausible. Combining everything known to man seems unlikely to produce saltpeter.
