Lord Richard Aitkin sat at his desk awaiting Sir William Kingsborough, Director of the Ministry of Military Intelligence. As he waited, he signed papers regarding the business of the Australian Parliament. Yes, it was still intact, as was the monarchy, everything was much the same as it was before the civil war except that multiculturalism was dead in Australia. They had suffered long under it's yolk, in that ridiculous European Union of old, and that bloody EDF. Their meddling had prolonged the civil war more than it had to. Still, the U.S. had it's share in prolonging that conflict as well, if it was up to him, he wouldn't have ties of any sort with either one, but Britain had to survive, and that meant it would have to have allies.

Just then Sir Kingsborough entered the room. "Good evening Lord Aitkin," the man said with a genuine smile.

Aitkin was startled for a moment, as he was wrapped up in his own thoughts. "Ah, well met Sir Kingsborough."

"Thinking again?" Kingsborough asked with a rueful grin.

"Indeed. You know our situation just as I, we can either run to the SPA or try the U.S., though the last I heard from the U.S. was that it was on the verge of a complete breakdown." Aitkin said with a grimace.

"That would be quite right, there is about a dozen factions or so that are ready to gut each other at a moments notice, some have even broken away from the Union entirely! I don't know how long it will last, but we think McMullen will be the victor." Kingsborough said flatly.

"Be that as it may, the EDF will not wait for the civil war to end, we are a liability to their security." Aitkin responded.

"Right again I'm afraid" Kingsborough said with a sigh, "No doubt they will try something however subtle to bring us into their fold. Forgive me for what I'm about to say, but it would be wise to cultivate some sort of working relationship with those across the channel, the EDF is a formidable power in it's own right, and our closest neighbor."

"That goes without saying," Aitkin responded, "but this government will not surrender our sovereignty to those bloody people! I want you to stay on top of this Kingsborough, I want to know what they are doing and if necessary, stop it."

"You can count on it," Aitkin responded with conviction.

Politics:

The Australian National Government was set up after the civil war to govern the Armed Republic. The party that established the government was the Australian Nationalist Party, it can be broken down into 3 factions. The Unionist faction favors the SPA. The way they see it, Australia should cultivate a strong relationship with their closest neighbor, some think it should be stronger than others. The Independent faction maintains that Australia must be independent, and they favor a semi-isolationist if not completely isolationist attitude towards the rest of the world. The Colonial faction, favors the United States as their Unionist counterparts favor the SPA. The current priority for the government is defense, and it is all but unanimous across all factions.

Currently, the Independents hold a vast majority of the power, the Unionist case has gained some due to the U.S. being on the brink of civil war, but many Brits value their sovereignty, and the Independents have made a tenuous alliance with the Colonials to counter the Unionists.

Economy:

Currently, the Armed Republic's economy is dominated by arms manufacturing and the giants of the Industry, BAE being the main player. Mining and raw materials processing come in second place with British Petroleum and Hatherson&Woodley coming in behind. It also has a small but growing movement towards mercenary companies, as the government regulates sparingly, and only when needed.

Military:

The priority here is making sure the armed forces are ahead of the curve and are more than adequate to defend the territory of Australia. This includes developing and researching new armor for infantry and tanks, be it powered or otherwise, staying on the top of fighter and aerospace technology, and making sure the Royal Navy has what it needs to maintain it's blue water capabilities.

Another thing that needs mentioning is the Australian National Army, which was the force of the BNP during the civil war. Much of the BNA dovetailed into the conventional armed forces and intelligence, what remains is more of a sleeping guerrilla force with cells based throughout Britain. They have but one priority, maintain Australian rule on Australian land.

[Kannap]

Kannap's airforce has come a long way in the past years. The air force now consists of mainly 850 Kannapo Sb18 bombers and 4,500 Kannapo J22 fighters.




Kannap has also finished construction of two aircraft carriers and is beginning work on two more of them. Also, construction of four battleships.

The highway system of Kannap is coming along nicely and is halfway complete. The Kannapian Universities in Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen have been completed and will be opened for attendance in the fall.

Phase one of the Grand Reform to Kannapian Education has also been finished. Phase two is working on student athletics. Athletic facilities will be constructed at Secondary schools and universities across the lands of Kannap. The incentive for students to be allowed to partake in athletics will also be changed. Students will have to make good grades, retaining at least a B in all classes to be eligible for athletics. This will improve the education of Kannap's students, as they will work harder for good grades so that they can do athletics. Phase two is expected to take 1.5 years to complete.

You do realize, don't you, that it's been just four years since the beginning of the thread? You may have taken several steps to reduce your dependence on the Vjörn economy, but to transition from Uieurnthlaal's iron mine to an economic power capable of an advanced army and air force in just two years is absurd.
