History: The Mesopotamian Civilization was one of the first in the world. It certainly was one of the greatest in early history. They traded around the area, gave birth to money and art, and made systems later used around the world. But, alas, the people living there today are just a figment of their formers selves. The once-great civilization has fallen into decay. The monuments still stand, but the attitude and prowess are gone. The arrogance is gone. The will to conquer large swaths of land, and to become an empire, were destroyed during the creation of the last one. Now, another people live here, former nomads, settling the area. They have settled in the cities and in the countryside, making the Land Between Rivers their home. To us, they look like Indians. Dark skin, brown eyes and back hair. The history of what happened has fallen into the oblivion of history. These people have only just began to write down their history, so, who can blame them?
But these are the facts. These people, Indus People, as they call themselves, are the first since the first Mesopotamians to grip the reigns of destiny again. The first in a long line of nomadic peoples to try and make something of this land again. To establish an empire, under the rule of the Great Ones. For a few years now, with the rapid expansion of population, the borders of the Realm began to increase. It’s only the beginning of that expansion, but already, some incorporated peoples, as well as Indus nomads who decided to remain nomads, are beginning to stir. Their decreased independence, and the threat to their culture and sovereignty, are very much real and alive. This will be a problem for future expansion, but so far, the new Empire faces no problems yet. No real problems. No wars have been fought yet, and the great spread of people is still peaceful but swift. It is only a matter of time, of course.
Culture: The Mesopotamian Civilization, shortly known as the Indus Civilization, is inhabited by the peaceful Indus people, a formerly nomadic tribe that settled in the remains of an even older civilization. The enormously lush grounds made it perfect for raising crops and herding cattle. The Indus people are, therefore, centred around peaceful existence. They farm, they manage the land, they advance in the sciences in the arts, they do things a peaceful civilization would do. The small army core, which acts as a police force, can also be used to deter any other lesser people from settling in the area. The Indus Civilization knows great works of architecture, either built by the ancestors, or based on their designs.
The belief system is based around spirits, demons, walking the earth. They believe the Earth has existed for an eternity, and that humans are evolved spirits brought about by heavenly energy. If you do wicked things, people mostly blame possession by an evil spirit, which results in decapitation and burning. If your family is decadent and rotten, that’s because they descended from demons. The plebs, the normal people, are said to have descended from lesser spirits, or to be in a lower state of evolution. They are looked down upon by the rich, land-owning classes, who pride themselves on being descendants from great thinker or warrior spirits. The Great Temples are devoted to these spirits. All disasters are either blamed on demons attracted by wickedness, or caused by possessed individuals. After a drought, earthquake, flood, or disease, there usually follows a time of great repression and puritanism, in which people are fed to mountain lions on a daily basis.
