The year is 1900 CE; it has been 86 years since the infamous 'Treaty of Florence' was signed, formally ending the Napoleonic Wars on the terms that Napoleon stepped down from the title of Emperor, France remained a republic and it's best guarded secret that which had near won it the war - Alchemy - was to be distributed among the other great European powers. Perhaps it did not occur to Paré in the 1500's, when he discovered the power of Alchemy on a battlefield as a surgeon, that his discovery would allow France to overcome the combined might of Europe in order to hold the line in the final hours of 1814. Indeed, without the Alchemical power of the French Alchemist guilds, it's debatable whether the French Republic would have been able to push for the favourable terms that the Treaty of Florence offered.
But, either way, the Science of Alchemy had now been released to the world; it's power and splendor dwarfing the British achievement that was the Industrial Revolution. This, however, was not to continue, as in 1816 the now-famous Scottish 'Father of Alcho-Industry' Robert Davidson built on James Watt's theories and finally made the connections between Alchemy, Chemistry and Industry allowing for the British to utterly dominate in the colonial theatre, and allowing vast expansions into science and technology that had not been seen since that of the Renaissance. It also lead to Davidson's knighthood and entrance to the 'Royal Alchemical Guild of Britain'. The Royal Guild had long since competed with the French 'Ligue Française des Alchimistes', along with other Guilds such as the Dutch 'Organisatie van de Nederlandse en Vlaamse Alchemisten'. Indeed, the guilds of Europe - and, soon, of the Far East and of the Americas - would continue to compete and drive competition between themselves to drive the advancement of Alchemy.
However, Alchemy was not the only science that had been unleashed by Paré. His new-founded field of thought spurred on the advancement of many other sciences, such as Astrology and Psychokinesis. Alchemy, as aforementioned, has also expanded beyond Europe. The Federated States of America, the Empire of Amazonia and the Mexican Republic in the Americas too have Alchemical Guilds, along with the Japanese Empire and Chinese Confederacy in the Far East. They have long since begun to catch up with the European Powers, and now they hunger for the Pacific and Asian territories held by the European invaders...
So where will you stand? In this world where Alchemy is both a Science and an Art of War, where Telekinetics can change the course of battle and where Astrologists can predict the future? Where will you stand in this world where dust can turn to gold?
I will take over the world as Switzerland.
We have dust AND gold to start out with.
xD
Hint: The Gold isn't whats important. I presume the value would have decreased due to the fact it's easy to get due to Alchemy. The real difference is that Alchemists - when extremely skilled - have the potential to decimate entire armies with the click of a finger.
