Rosalind's grimace faded as she turned away from the bird with a huff, dipping her hand back into the stream.

It was sunset. It was always sunset in this timeless place.

A meadow, with a river, and a bridge. Hidden from the rest of the universe, its contents invisible, connected to Elfen High. It was a pure place, a safe place, sullied by not even the presence of a Calhoun.

Rosalind lay in the soft grass and breathed deeply. The angel was dying, and it was her fault. It was always her fault. What if she had died in Hell? Would D be able to take care of himself? Would Megan be free to do as she wished? Would Lewis yet live?

She was a burden. That was all she had ever been. A damsel in distress for her family to die for. A frightened animal lashing out, a pathetic creature for the strong to die for. A worthy cause, maybe, if you were a hero; but to be the cause itself, was she not immoral to continue her existence? To continue threatening the school?

She had a monster in her head. She could, at any moment, turn and kill everything she loved.

She should die. She should kill herself.

But she was a coward. Always had been.

She glanced up at the trees, light flowing through the branches and leaves, beautiful. Beauty was foreign to her; her world was ugly and dark, a walk in the shadows.

Her first brush with beauty was in a field of reeds, near a river, with the Sun held high, rising in the east and painting the sky scarlets and purples dancing on the clouds.

"Do you know what this place is called?" he - It - whispered in Its beautiful, angelic voice. Birdsong.

"This is the land known to the Egyptians as the field of offerings," It said, "Sekhet Hetepet, in the island chain of Aaru, past the Fifteen Gates of Truth. This is the home of Osiris, or it was. This is the Egyptian's Heaven, and the most beautiful place in all my kingdom. I rule over many lands, but this I favor the most."

It placed its hand on Rosalind's shoulder. She shivered and forced back tears - where was her daddy?

"I have brought you here," It said, kneeling down and speaking into her face, his breath dank and putrid, brimstone and sulfur, "so that you may see it, and you may learn. When you are locked in the coldest dungeons in the kingdom, you will long for its warmest field, and you will submit to my will."

It rose and turned from the girl, plucking a reed from the earth.

"This place is, simply put," he continued, "beauty incarnate."

The reed caught fire. It threw it into the field.

"And in my world," he finished, "there is no beauty. Only what I desire."

The fields were consumed in an instant. In a plain of flame, It turned to Rosalind.

"Only what I command," It said, "There shall be no solace or joy, only the total domination of Azazel. Only my power, my will."

It slithered up to the girl.

"And you," It smiled, "girl, will be the first citizen of my new age."

It grabbed her by the throat and pulled her up from the ground, eyes burning with the same inferno as the field. It pulled her close and tightened Its grips, hot tears rolling down Its black flesh and rejoicing in the flame.

"Submit," It growled.

And It had Its way.
