Lets say every human farmer can support two laborers, and every Oni farmer can support one laborer. Those two human farmers can, for purposes of argument, do a similar amount of work as the Oni, for the same amount of food, but the Oni need more stone to build the same quality of fortress.

Same food for the same labor.
Same labor for the same resources.
Different fortress for the same resources.

Hence, the Oni will, per unit of food put into construction, build an appreciably weaker fortress.

OK, I get it. I'm still not yielding my offensive prowess though.

Oh no. Eight foot tall soldiers can carry heavier armor, put more force behind blows, and use more energy-intensive weapons. I'm certain they'd be formidable offensive combatants.

On that note, someone should post.

To be fair, the Ver!tch have similar issues with our defensive fortifications. We're essentially giant Japanese spider crabs, so human-style fortifications won't work well against us (so we wouldn't build them, since we'd be fighting among ourselves initially), which has led to issues, since I can't think of other fortification styles that we'd use...

*Seven to eight feet. They CAN get bigger, but that's rare at this point.

Also, they can construct larger siege equipment, and are strong enough to make a noticable difference with Mangonels. On top of that is their cav, and their weaponry is primarily blunt as opposed to sharp or pointy due to the Oni's strength.

My Xenobiological Defensive Engineering Degree comes in the mail tomorrow.

But seriously, I'd need to give that some though. Walls, I presume, would still be a viable defensive tactic, as well as ditches/moats. Unless the Ver!tch can climb sheer surfaces?

:D

Actually, I would imagine they could climb very steep surfaces, but that's not my major point. Given their height/width, even though they're very light (human-weight, I'd guess), they're extremely spindly and large. I'd run into the same problem with the Oni if I try and make walls and ditches---they'd have to be extremely wide (to accommodate a Ver!tch on the top) or extremely deep (to stop a Ver!tch from simply walking across).

It's an interesting problem, and one I did not consider. Hrm.

Thankfully, my creature is human-like enough to not worry about this kind of stuff. I will have to worry about protecting against the other, larger, more destructive creatures that I might encounter, though... :?
