Even when he was young, he saw the advantages of having a good education and being a child prodigy, worked hard to achieve his goals. He managed to graduate college at the age of 20 and at 21 immediately entered the police force, partly because he wanted to spite his own father but mainly because he wanted to help change the city for the better. He worked his way up to become a narcotics detective, and personally arrested members of his own family (including his father) during a successful drug bust. That particular raid was his career booster and he became a sort of celebrity during that time and was eventually nicknamed The Super Cop of LV City by the Media. Abel quickly got himself promoted to the next rank and the next, each time proving his worth and his value as a good & dedicated cop to his superiors. When the last chief of police got killed during a hit & run incident, the mayor offered to Abel, then an Inspector/commander of a precinct, the post which he of course gladly accepted. Abel soon began to feel the stress and burden of being the Police Commissioner......nevertheless he did his job well (if not seriously) and lived up to the expectations of his superior. Noted as the hottest and probably the youngest individual to become the commissioner, Abel also has a really immature personality which emerges whenever he is out of public view. He know the seriousness in keeping up his public image but somehow he can't help but input the childish fun he always had during his rookie days into the job he has now. Therefore, he hates sitting behind a desk all day long and would still go out to personally investigate a major crime or even apprehend a wanted criminal with the other assigned officers.

And the mother was left to raise him alone?

the commissioner is a pretty high end job for your characters age? How about lieutenant or captain in the homicide department? That'd make it more legit.
