No. I don't want to improve my gaming experience and thus I'm selecting this option because you've pretty much boxed me in to it. I know I don't actually have to select anything anyway but I'm compelled to cast a vote. I know I can go to viewtopic.php?f=31&t=268404 if I really wanted to voice my opinion.

It's 'difficult to learn properly in print. Swith helped me understand why my spoken English is awful; I learned to read the words but not how to pronounce them out loud. You don't have to worry too much about speaking Japanese if you go to Japan. It's more important to learn the culture. Japanese value that more than someone being able to speak in their native tongue. Etiquette is everything.

Good night Gio.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

I'm training to be a missionary there...so yeah, I will probably be living there for months at a time. So learning the language would help.

less than 1% of Japan is Christian. Japanese churches have an average attendance of less than 30.

China is actually 8% Christian. And my principle was held there for "distributing forbidden literature" aka, Bibles. and so now she can't go back. Besides, I'm not called to China, I'm called to Japan.

Japan is a Buddhist country. Imagine the same amount of land in the US. Most religious would be Christian with maybe 1% or less as Buddhist. My Buddhist temple here has maybe 15 who attend Kosen Rufu gongyo each month. Demographics.

Please be aware, Japanese don't have any problem with Christianity. The churches are respected. The people are respected. The missionaries? The message is lost. It isn't because of the message. It's the delivery. Missionaries don't take the time to learn the culture. They don't speak in a respectful way. Are they polite? Yes. Very polite missionaries. The difference might be that they're speaking too loud. Using the wrong words. Wearing the wrong color. Not following conversation etiquette. They don't pick up on polite cues given by the Japanese person. They become forceful. Something as simple as speaking in a normal (for Westerners) voice is simply too loud when conversing with Japanese.

"God cares about you!"

Which god?

"The Christian God, the one and only True God!"

There are more than one god. That's pretty rude to come to my house and tell me my way isn't real.

"He died for you!"

So did my ancestors.

"He wants to give you the gift of salvation!"

Salvation? From what? From the high cost of fish?

"Sins. He wants to save you from your sins!"

I don't sin.

"Everyone sins!"

Westerners sin. That's why they need their Western god. Thank goodness I'm Japanese.

"Don't you believe your bad deeds in this life will make your next life bad?"

Do I look Chinese? Why do you missionaries always assume we Buddhists are all the same? Look, Western person, you're very nice, but if my life is bad then I made it so. I correct my life by [insert whatever flavor of Buddhist teaching here] and I have peace.

I kid. I grew up with Christian missionaries down the street. The ones who knew my culture were nice to talk to. The ones who arrive from overseas are worth two aspirin to stop the headache. Flawless language skills don't mean much if the missionary doesn't embrace all aspects of the culture. I cut visiting Westerners slack (as do most, I believe) but when the Westerner takes my polite head nod as "please keep talking, I'm interested", it becomes drudgery.

My father, by the way, is Catholic. No one in Japan cared.

Aside from the fact that Westerners get Asians confused - nearly every Christian I speak with seems to think Buddhism=Confucianism=reincarnation. I don't know why. Tibet and India are both the same. Japan is just like China. Somehow.

"I'm German!"

Ah, so you speak French?

"No, I'm from Germany."

That's in Europe.

"Yes."

You obviously speak French.

Aside from that:

Urran, learn the culture from a Japanese person. I can't teach my Japanese friends American culture. I can only tell them what I've experienced as a foreigner. I rely on Swith and my American friends to teach me. Then I know it's the truth because they grew up here. Japanese culture is so complex that even Japanese children don't understand all the nuances. Your friend may be doing a gesture that's offensive but the Japanese around him are too polite to correct him. Thus, you pick up a bad habit.

On the topic of missionaries, I always felt that the approach that Cer just gave as an example has always set me off a little bit. I feel that the best way to spread Christianity to someone is to let them incorporate it with their own current beliefs instead of replacing them. I feel it would probably be less intrusive and would make for more interesting results.

...Actually, I'm now wondering about good strategies for being a missionary going door-to-door. What would be the best introduction? "Jesus died for your signs mauhn" isn't really very appealing. What would be a good, pleasant conversation starter?

"Hello, I'm a missionary. I'm also very thirsty. Would you mind if I gave you $1 for a glass of water?"

The good person waves away the offer of money but provides the water. They might listen. They might be too busy.

The uncaring person shuts the door.

The fellow Christian gives the water anyway, explains they're Christian, but might also say they've very busy and don't have time to talk.

The weird Christian asks if you're a Mormon or JW, takes your money, never comes back to the door and then calls all her friends to say she'd just had a close encounter.

I should bring this up to alleviate hard feelings. GT said he won't be home long. Swith will want to game with him if he games at all. Please don't begrudge her characters spending time with his. She might think of a silly adventure for Superbia and Blythe to do. Just example. He might want to have Thriller work on a mech suit with someone and not visit all the apartment.

Story standpoint: Thriller's been away at war. He left behind his wife and kids. They haven't seen him or heard from him. Swith's posted IC that her character's always checking heaven and hell in case he turns up dead. Returning home, in context of the story, may mean they rekindle their story before he (GT) leaves again for training. I have no problem if she wants to pause her other characters during that time.

CreepFest is still on for Friday.

Good night Eru.

No problems, as usual. Hurrah, Friday!

Goodnight Eru and Urran!!!

Now that I'm awake again... anything need responding to? I have to check a few other RP, but then I'll stop by PL again.

Not really. I replied to Misaki and Hans (viewtopic.php?p=17060055#p17060055), but replying is up to you. :)
