You know, it's almost a tradition that all my historical PT posts start with a galley at sea approaching the coast.

This might be a tad difficult to do in the Swiss Alps.

Haha. This is true. You could be a galley sliding down a snow-covered mountain though.

I don't have an app quite yet (soon though), but, as of a few pages back, I've decided to play as Helvetia, that delightfully neutral, defensible small chunk in the alps.

I was browsing through Swiss articles on Wiki. My goodness, every municipality (and there're over two thousand of them, plus pages for ex-municipalites with less than 100 residents) has a full-fledged page with their crest and population and images and full-fledged census information.

Edited the map to include Helvetia, (since I don't doubt that it'll be accepted) painted Rome red (borders pending) and slightly edited the proposal for the partition of Russia; in this version of Parhe's wonderful map, Northern Russia gains control of the former Republic of Novgorod, which means it now actually has a population. This is to the detriment of Southern Russia, but I figured since Southern Russia retains control of Moscow, the Caucasus, and the more populated Russian principalities (Presuming that St. Petersburg wasn't founded by the Swedes as Mongol control of Russia would have made trade with the principalities inconvenient, to say the least) it still has a pretty big advantage over the empty North.

Nation name: Helvetia
Form of rule: Helvetia is nominally a republic, though in reality it is more of a Roman Empire-styled monarchy with hereditary 'governors', i.e. emperors (and of late empresses, with the advent of the suffragari movement); plus an elected council. Current Emperors, however, have demonstrated a willingness to step down, though they’re always replaced by a close relative.
Location: That white territory in the middle of Europe, in the Alps.
Currency: Helvetian Denarii
Population: 2.2 million
Internal Development Level: Very good to excellent. Electricity is not too common, but all cities and towns have electrified public areas, with energy supplied by coal and hydropower. A decent railway system, and electric trams, connect major urban centres. As Rome never fell, literacy is widespread.
International Economic Strength: Decent in Europe, miserable everywhere else
Military Size: 4 Legionary groups and support troops- 13,500 professional, 12,000 semi-professional.
Military Info: Legionary organisation isn't terribly far from Roman organisation, with a legion split into 4 cohorts with 12 centuria each, plus attached artillery and engineers, armed with standard pulverem breech-loading rifles, impes grenades, and gladiuses. A 1,500 strong cavalry-pulled artillery arm adds to the 4 4000-strong legions.
Ideology: Somewhat Roman-aligned, somewhat open trade, otherwise very neutral.
Religion: Gallo-Roman polytheist pantheon. Some Zoroastrian and Abrahamic monotheists.
Capital city: Castel Turicum
National History: The Helvetii were originally a Celtic tribe squashed by Julius Caesar on his way into Gaul. Subsequently colonised by Rome, Helvetia plodded on fine for a few centuries until the Crisis of the 4th Century AD (or 11th Century A.U.C.), when marauding Vandals, aided by other migrating barbarians, pushed deep into Roman Germania en masse, raiding Helvetia after several shock victories over Legionaries. Nevertheless, the newly raised Legio XXXI Helvetia Vitrix decisively pushed them out of the Empire in a pitched battle. The German limes were reinforced after the war, most particularly the Helvetian side, with outposts set up across the Rhine, and legionaries, with the assistance of Vandal captives, building the impressive Raetian Long Walls, a line of polished stone stretching from the east of Helvetia to the Danuvius River. The incoming tribes were allowed to peacefully settle in the shadow of the wall (‘shaded’ is still a common epithet in frontier villages).
The towns that sprung up around the wall, and Helvetia itself, thrived on German trade. Rarely ever needed, it became something of a tourist attraction- that is, until tales of expert horsemen ruthlessly bloodying Persia and ‘Rus flooded in. The Long Walls were hastily stripped of their shops and embellishments and refortified. Fortunately, the Mongols’ advance slowed at Roman Gothia and the Long Walls were never needed. And a good thing too, because increased technological advance, as the wars flared up again in later centuries, were making all but the hardiest fortifications obsolete. Helvetia, like many Roman provinces, practiced limited conscription in those turbulent years, and returning Helvetian Legionaries, having distinguished themselves in Kushan lands, brought back a stream of Mongolian and Han captives, supplying Helvetia with slaves and technology transfer, though as of late the latter has been phasing out use of the former.
When Rome collapsed, the Helvetians declined to join other states in declaring secession, claiming it was still loyal to the Emperor. They did a sudden about-face when the Empire stabilised again, trotting in some excuse about the legitimacy of the current dynasty. As they were, like nearby post-Roman states, nominally still Rome-aligned, they slipped into independence quietly.
Primary Language: Latin, Helvetian German, French
Secondary Language(s): Romansch, Rhaeto-German
Naval Ship Prefix: HCI (Helvetia Classicula Insular)
Demonym: Helvetian
Leader(s): Consul Titularii Melibum Allus, Praefectus Titularii Julia Thraceus

I must say, Helvetia turned out to be less tiny than expected- I thought I'd only occupy that one province that was left on Parhe's map. :p
Feel free to trim 2 or 3 provinces- I intend to be a minor player.
