Irrelevance wrote:Nation name: Gothic Empire
Form of rule: Imperial
Location: Modern day Ukraine's territory
Currency: Solit (From the Roman Solidus coin)
Population: 11,000,000 (Half our historical population of the Ukraine at the time, though I think the figure may have been 1920)
Internal Development Level: Not developed, the nation is mostly agricultural.
International Economic Strength: Not very strong, trade is big though, but not much of the money gets into the hands of the commoners.
Military Size: 100,000 active soldiers, 900,000 reserves/militias
Military Info (Optional): All males undergo a year of training upon their eighteenth birthday, and remain as potential reserves until the age of twenty five when they are downgraded to normal civilians, though they can still serve as volunteers, on the whole the military is pretty well equipped as war is a big thing for the Goths, the old barbarian blood lust is still in their veins, and machine guns do a hell of a lot more than knives.
Ideology: Imperialism, Gothic nationalism/supremacy.
Religion: Gothic/Roman hybrid paganism, minority Slavic and Mongol groups.
Capital city: Gesyev (Kiev, but instead of Kyi being the mythical founder, it was a Goth named Gesa)
National History: As in our timeline, several tribes of ancient Goths, namely the Greuthungi and Thervingi's settle around the Dneister river and Black Sea some time in the third century, the Thervingi still attempt to invade the Roman Empire around 270 AD, and are crushed as usual, but instead of staying around the Danube as they did in our reality and realising that the Thervingi alone can not defeat the mighty Roman Empire, the tribal leader, who's name has been lost to history returned to Crimea and after marrying his daughters off to several other chieftains, asserted his domination over the local tribes, this proto-Gothic state did not cover all that much territory and was not very powerful, but it was a symbol of things to come.
When the Huns invaded, as I assume they still did, the Gothic state, now covering most of the western half of their current borders petitioned the Roman Emperor for protection, which was granted, and it became just another Roman province, the Gothic leaders did not like being under another's command, but it was better than being exterminated by the Huns (In RL, they were near the Danube and had been attacked later, and then en-masse moved into Rome, so this is nicer than the alternative for them), the old enemies were now saviors and friends, they brought wonderful new technologies such as aqueducts, great cultural advances like currencies and introduced the Goths to imperialism, which becomes very important later on.
The Goths stood by their Roman rulers through thick and thin, the proud barbarian race proved to be just as good at fighting alongside Romans as they were against them, almost a thousand years of (relatively) peaceful existence went by in this manner, and many everyday Gothic words have their roots in those used by Legionnaires and Centurions, eventually they came to think of themselves as both Gothic and Roman, but they were Goths first and foremost, when the Empire fell, they were quite disturbed, and afraid of potential change, so naturally, they kept an Empire going, the Gothic Empire.
Since then, in the hundred years of the Goths being free, they have, though several quick conquests against hold outs of Mongol and Slavic rebels, unified the area known to us as the Ukraine, and have been living in peace ever since, they see themselves as the rightful successor to the old Roman Empire, and many Roman traditions, words and institutions are carried on, such as the slave trade, citizenship for conquered peoples (As long as they serve their masters), a proper currency and others.
Primary Language: Gothic
Secondary Language(s): Latin and Greek speaking trade communities in Crimea, plus local Slavic languages and the occasional Mongol village in the East.
Naval Ship Prefix: Go.V. (Gothic Vessel)
Demonym: Goth (Although there are some Slavs, Mongols and Romans sitting around)
Leader(s): Emperor Winguric I
