They're useful to me; my most core lands are Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and at the moment, Holstein, Schleswig and Lubeck are the only things stopping me from being the only person with Baltic access, from linking my circle around the Baltic for transport purposes, and from cushioning my only vulnerable core area.

Speaking of canals, the Suez Canal for sure exists in this timeline, but whether the Kiel or Panama canals exist is up to the nation that control those areas.
