Absolutely.
It's a case of what you don't have.
My Dwarves are generally built with food/iron, so upgrading them with Iron does nothing. They can be upgraded with both Steel, Gold, and now Mithril though.
Some units are built with food/steel, so then they can only be upgraded with Gold and Mithril. Etc, etc.
Essentially, the weaker a unit is, the less time it will take to train, and the more it will generally benefit from available upgrades. Training weak units is an expensive but quick way to get strength, whereas training strong units is a slow but cheaper way to get strength.

Join me in what? The invasion of Gundabad? I'm not too sure I'm going to get involved, there are already three nations fighting over a small mountain. Perhaps I'll swoop in, perhaps I won't, I'm yet to decide.
