Game of Thrones: Win or Die [Sign-up, OOC]

Postby Of the Quendi » Thu Jul 11, 2013 7:34 am

*THE ROLE OF HOUSES GREYJOY AND ARRYN ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE, APPLICATIONS WELCOMED*

IC thread

Intro
Welcome to the Game of Thrones RP where you either win or you die. This RP is inspired by the books of George R. R. Martin and the derivative series where its participants will RP in the GOT setting but with characters designed by themselves. San Monteriano and I, as Game of Thrones aficionado's extraordinaire will be Co-OP'ing this RP and which we hope will be a lot of fun for all involved.

Setting
The RP will take its beginning with all of House Targaryen, the ruling family of the Seven Kingdoms, having a very misfortunate accident. A fatal accident. The entirety of the House will be killed leaving the Seven Kingdoms leaderless and in chaos. Two of the Great Houses of the remaining eight have in recent history received Targaryen brides, and both will claim the Iron Throne. Schemes and manipulations, war and alliances will ensue as the eight Great Houses play the Game of Thrones.

Houses

Rather than having a set application form players interested in joining are asked to make a description of the current situation of your house, its composition, its aspirations etc. Bellow you can see an example of how this can be done, but it is not a requirement. If you have any doubt about how to do so please tg one of the OP's. The only demand for an app is that it contains at least three RP sample links.

Example app

House Tyrell is young House that first rose to prominence after Aegon the Conqueror installed the House as Lord Paramounts of the Reach. It is one of the most powerful houses of the Seven Kingdoms commanding the largest army, the second largest treasury and possibly the largest navy in the entire Realm. It is however also a house that do to its humble origins is often considered inferior in dignity to more ancient and prestigious houses.

House Tyrell is currently lead by Lord Willard Tyrell who has ruled the Reach as Lord of Highgarden for eight years since the demise of his famed father Lord Gillard Tyrell, who was hand of the King for a generation before his death. Lord Willard is an amicable man though arguably not a great ruler. Cautious and largely disinterested in the affairs of the Seven Kingdom Lord Willard as well as to amicable to make harsh decisions Lord Willard has only managed to keep his vassals in line due to his mother's and wive's penchant for arranging favorable dynastic marriages.

In addition to his mother and wife, both of whom exert great influence on the governance of the Reach each in their way, Lord Willard has five children.

Non-house entities
Obviously ASOIAF/GOT consists of more factions than just the nine Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms. There are the Nights Watch, the Dothraki Khalasar, the Wildlings and the Free Cities not to mention all the hundreds of lesser houses. This RP will however focus on the actions of the Great Houses and only in the case that all eight of them are filled will we open up for RP'ing something other than the Great Houses. If not all Great Houses are taken and you none the less really wants to RP as a non-house you can tg one of the OP's and tell us about it and maybe we will allow for an exception.

About:

House Tully rose to prominence during the Andal invasion of Westeros when the Tullys aided the Valyria invaders in deposing the Ironmen from the mainland, repelling them back to their native Iron Islands. Aegon the Conqueror, the first leader of a unified Westeros, granted the Tullys lordship over the Riverlands, an honour bestowed upon Lord Edmyn Tully, the first of a long lineage of Tullys of Riverrun. In the recent line, Lord Hosteen Tully bore three children: Annys, Falyse and Minisa. Minisa went on to marry a Northern lord before succumbing to death. Hosteen, crippled by illness and outliving one of his children, eventually died, leaving the lordship of Riverrun to his oldest, Annys. She too is plagued by death, with her husband - Beric Royce - being murdered by mountain tribes of the Vale.

The Tullys have shrunken in size over the past decades, with only a handful left in existence, their wavy auburn hair is considered a rare trait in the Riverlands.

House Nymeros Martell of Sunspear

Image

House Name: House Nymeros Martell of Sunspear

House Leader/Lord: Darren, Prince of Dorne, Lord of Sunspear (43)

House Members:
  • Lady Lysa Yronwood, his wife (34)
  • Quentyn Martell, his son (17)
  • Darya, his daughter (12)
  • Mellario, his daughter (10)
  • Princess Ellaria, his sister (17) (Deceased)
  • Prince Morton "The Great Spear", his brother(37)
  • Nymeria Sand, Morton's paramour
Household

  • Maester , Maester of Sunspear (62)
  • Ser Roderik Yronwood, Captain of the Guards (44)
  • Ser Draco Martell , Castellan of Sunspear, Son of Ellaria and nephew of Darren (23)
  • Selwyn Wyke, Steward of Sunspear (58)
  • Alys Wyke, Wife of Selwyn Wyke
Principle Bannermen:

Yronwood, Uller, Fowler, Dalt, Blackmont, Dayne, etc...

About:

House Martell has ruled Dorne since the joining of King Mors Martell with Queen Nymeria of the Rhoynar. Such an ancient House has ruled the southern continent for centuries; generally unmolested by its northern neighbors. However, as Aegon the Conqueror waged his Wars of Conquest, he eventually came to Dorne. Here his army was bled dry by guerrilla warfare in the desert, a situation in which his dragons were of little use. Deciding that conquering Dorne would be too costly, the Conqueror opted to leave the Martells as sovereign princes. House Martell kept Dorne independent from the Targaryens for two centuries, the only one of the Seven Kingdoms to manage such a feat. After repeated failed attempts at conquest (most notably under Daeron I), Dorne eventually joined the fold through marriage between the two houses. The alliance was a dual one, with the future King Daeron II marrying Princess Myriah Martell and Prince Maron Martell later marrying Daeron's sister Daenerys.[2] [3]

During Daeron II's reign, the Red Keep assumed a decidedly Dornish flavor due to the influence of his Martell wife. This was one reason that many nobles opted to rise against his rule. The Martells thus defended his claim against Daemon Blackfyre. After their victory, Maron and Daenerys fulfilled their betrothal, formally bringing Dorne into the Seven Kingdoms. Since then, the Martells have ruled Dorne in the name of the King on the Iron Throne, while keeping the title of Prince of Dorne.

Though not as strong as it's neighboring House Tyrell, Martell benefits from ruling over a largely desert formed land that is divided from the north by the Red Mountains; which possesses passes that are easily defendable by a lesser force. But if a
force breaks this line of defense, the desert can be used as a vast cooking pot for heavily armored foes as well as a great area in which to perform guerilla warfare.

The demise of the Targaryens removes Martell's ties to the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms and opens up Dorne to separating into a separate Kingdom yet again. Whether Martell will join forces with any potential pretender for the Iron Throne or simply leave the affairs of the north alone entirely is unclear to most in the Seven Kingdoms.

It is tempting to put up an app but can you tell me what the format of the IC will be in? How will things be handled like the progression of time and what would the average post length be expected to be? Also, what would the status of Magic, specifically warging, be in this RP? If permissible I would have a character serving as Master of Whisperers who has some warging/skinchanging ability (I imagine that would make him quite useful).

I'd like to reserve an app spot for the Starks while I work on the app.

How do you mean format?

Progression of time is an issue on which we have not yet decided on anything finite and we are open to suggestions.

As for an average post length obviously one-liners is unacceptable but other than that there isn't that many rules as long as we are dealing with quality RP'ing. It is also perfectly acceptable to vary the length of ones post with some being very long and others short. What lengths did you have in mind?

As for magic I plan on having Alekyne Tyrell be a warg as well and magic is allowed, but with limitations. People will not be allowed to suddenly pull a Melisandre and slay the characters of another player (unless of course said player approves) and generally I believe the use of magic should be kept to a reasonable level and all magic actions with wide reaching repercussions should be approved by me and my co-OP.

I only format by the time and length but I asked a bit. That's good to hear and I would be having a couple paragraphs minimum per post.

I'll be sure to have my Stark app up in the morning.

Others:

Bannermen (Specific individuals will be noted later):
  • Karstark
  • Umber
  • Bolton
  • Flint
  • Manderly
  • Hornwood
  • Mormont

About: House Stark is one of the more ancient and venerable Houses in the North and possibly in the entire Seven Kingdoms having made their ascent thousands of years ago and with members of their House being told in legend such as "Brandon the Builder". Their line has wavered over centuries of rule as Kings in the North but it was the invasion of the Targaryens led by Aegon the Conqueror which led to the end of the Kings of the North but the survival of the Stark House. Torrhen, the King Who Knelt surrendered before Aegon and with his submitting he gained the position of Warden of the North and the Starks kept all lands in fealty to the Targaryens.

Nowadays the Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell is Brutus Stark, a decorated warrior and compassionate leader to his vassals in the North but he has no love to spare for those in the South. Like the Winter, he is to them hard and unyielding with little care to his two brothers either who had gone south long ago with one forsaking their claim to Winterfell.

Brutus and his younger wife have three sons and a daughter between them and Brutus has a bastard son he fathered second who is an accomplished archer with the keenest eyes in the North it is said. He fashions arrows from weirwood and is a firm keeper of the Old Gods.

Military Strengths: ~45 000 Approx

Naval Capacity: ~20 Approx (White Harbor)

RP Samples: New Guard, A Message to the Universe, On His Majesty's Service. Also, I've read all five books if that is worthy anything.

I know; but rules are rules and I prefer not to give special treatment to the people I know. But I will look at those in your sig, and then the ones we are in together and leave it at that. In the mean time I however think it would perfectly admissible if you wanted to double the size of the Dornish army. Dorne shouldn't be strong but I doubt they only had ten thousand (and remember that is a maximum number which means you would have closer to 7,000 under arms at any one point, if even that, if you go with 10k)

Naval Capacity: ~50 Approx (White Harbor)

RP Samples:

Remember samples. Also I think you need to scale down on the navy. 50 ships is a very large force for a single Bannerman house to command.

Shall I keep the same number of ships but spread them out to different locations? I only had them all in White Harbor as that is the largest Port City in the North.

Well House Manderly of White Harbor is the only house in the North that has a navy so thats why the navy of the North would necessarily be small.

That's why I only stuck with fifty which I assumed would be their prime strength as it is in ASOIAF I believe. It is mentioned that they're not only in White Harbor itself but spread along the White Knife and are constructed with assistance from the Umbers so it would be both Umbers and Manderly Men manning them. Do you want me to lower them to say forty perhaps?

I'm interested in playing as an individual character. Probably gonna go for a council member or a Kingsguard.

I might just be doing a "Kingmaker" if I get accepted. :)

Umber men only mans the ships because it is a very dire situation in the North when they are built, ordinarily only Manderly men mans them and I seriously doubt House Manderly has the four to sixteen thousand men it would take to man 40 galleys. 10-20 is a more reasonable number I think.

Noted. House Arryn isn't entirely without ships. Gulltown has a small fleet and so does the Three Sisters. So you can have some 10-20 ships if you like. Also why is all your characters having germanic names, some of them even germanic surnames? That is not very Vale'ish.

Until all houses are taken we don't accept non-house players, but I can tg you when that happens?

About: House Greyjoy of Pyke is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. It rules over the Iron Islands, a harsh and bleak collection of forbidding islands off the west coast of Westeros, from the castle and island of Pyke. Their sigil is a golden kraken on a black field, and their house motto is "We Do Not Sow." Members of the family tend to be attractive and well-built, with black hair.

The House descends from the Grey King, a legendary figure from the Age of Heroes. The Greyjoys became the lords paramount of the Iron Isles during the Targaryen Conquest: after Aegon I extinguished House Hoare, he allowed the ironborn to choose who would have primacy over them. They chose Vickon Greyjoy and his line.[3] The Greyjoys have ruled ever since, from their formidable castle of Pyke. The ironborn, however, did lose the Riverlands, which were granted to Edmyn Tully and his descendents.

Thus relegated to their dismal homeland and constrained by the king's peace, the Greyjoys have kept themselves distant from the other Great Houses, rarely taking part in events on the mainland (which they call the "green lands"). At various times they have tried to return to their ancient practices of raiding the western coastlines, such as under Lord Dagon.

Since the demise of the last Sons and Daughters of Old Valyria, the Ironborn have began to test the waters of the new order, with independent ships raiding the coastlines while the Old Kraken, Raddon, awaits news from King's Landing as to the status of the Iron Throne. Some think that he will seek to regain the independence of the Iron Islands, with him as Iron King, as he dreamed of in his youth. Those that have known him in his age believe that he will attempt to secure Greyjoy prominence in the new King's court. No one truly knows, however, if the young raider or old lord will win out as they prepare to play the game of thrones...
Military Strengths: 20,000 approx. swords and spears.

Naval Capacity: The Iron Fleet, comprised of roughly 100 longships and some dozen ships that dip more than a hundred oars. Also some 300 more longships serve the various noble houses of the Iron Islands for both military purposes and raiding.

About:

House Lannister of Casterly Rock one of the principal Great Houses of Seven Kingdoms, and the most powerful house in the Westerlands. Their seat is Casterly Rock, though another branch exists that is based in nearby Lannisport. Their sigil is a golden lion on a field of crimson.
"
The Lannisters reigned as Kings of the Rock until they fell to the Targaryen conquest, but were allowed to remain the paramount lords of the Westerlands. The House had fallen on hard times during the rule of Artos Lannister, as he was a weak and inefficient ruler, often emptying the coffers as soon as they were filled. He allowed his bannerman to run amok, raping and pillaging as they pleased while he took the blame at court for their wayward ways.

It wasn't until his death and the ascention of his firstborn son, Bartholomew to the Lordship of the Westerlands that the Lannister name was restored. His first action as Lord of Casterly Rock was to summon all of his banners to answer for their actions, no matter how great or minor the offense was he ensured that they all paid for their actions. Dozens had their heads separated from their heads and their children became wards directly under the young lord, and those that managed to keep their heads, had other parts of their bodies removed in their stead. Those lords that did not head to his call to Casterly Rock were marched on and had their seats razed to the ground and their entire lines put the steel.

After securing his position at home, Bartholomew focused his attention on tightening the reigns within the family itself and Lannisters from all over the Westerlands were called to Casterly Rock in order to swear new oaths of fealty as well as to strengthen their family ties. He arranged for more than a dozen new marriages mostly between various cousins and the cadet branches of the House.Including his own marriage to a Royal Princess, making the Lannister's of Casterly Rock blood relatives of the throne.

Feeling confident that the home front was secured, the Lord turned his attention to the other Kingdoms and ensured that everyone knew that Lannisters paid and collected on their debts. In order to facilitate his consolidation of power, he formed an elite guard, separate from the household guard that most lords had permanently raised for their immediate protection. They were trained by professional knights and their armor and the likes were paid directly from the Lannister's coffers. He sent his red cloaks across the realm, collecting debts, enforcing his will and if needed quietly slaughtering his enemies.

The King seeing this young lion as a very capable man and a potential enemy, he ordered him to King's Landing and eventually made him Master of Whispers for a time, until the current hand died of unnatural causes and the Lion assumed the Handship until the birth of his first son; when he resigned the handship in order to care for his growing family.

Eventually as his family matured he was needed less and less at Casterly Rock and decided that the needs of his House would be best suited by him returning to King's Landing in order to once again secure the handship and reassert his House's position within the Realm. With the royal bloodline extinguished and the various cousins vying for the throne, Bartholomew staked his own eldest son's claim to the throne through his royal blood as well as youth.

Military Strengths: 50-60,000 (approx.)

Naval Capacity: 12, with 100 ores or more

Oh, BTW, does anyone want Annys' dead sister Minisa to be their ex-wife? In the last one we did she was Lord Stark's dead wife but anyone is up for a dead wife and an alliance then that's all good. :p
