WW1 The French held the line and even defeated Germany in a decisive battle at Verdun. WW2 yes the French surrendered but not the people. The people fought on in la résistance' français'. Where they made immense destruction on German forces through stealth and sabotage.

What about the Somme or the Ardennes clearly they didn't win there, the maginot line was a failure, even Italy in WW2 took a chunk of them

Actually Somme was most successful for the French even more so than for the British. And yes the maginot line was a failure in the end but mostly thanks to incompetent leadership and that no one knew how to counter blitzkrieg yet not the French fighting spirit. Plus the only reason the italians even got a chunk of France was because of Germany. The French decisively defeated the invading Italians despite the German invasion.

WW2 though, that's crap. Yes, they were outmaneuvered, panicked and surrendered. Yes, there was a resistance movement. But there were also more Nazi collaborators in France then there were resistance fighters. The entire story of the french resistance crippling the Germans was generally made up after the war by the french government as a way of raising French morale.

Incidentally, the reason they held on so strongly to Vietnam and Algeria, despite the horrific violence, was because they did not want to be seen as defeatist people who surrender.
