I know... ever since this RP started, part of me has been secretly hoping for a war between Persia (HSE) and Sparta, just so I can see if the 300 soldiers would have fared any better in a musket-battle.

If you want to be recognized your going the wrong way about it and lets say Sweden and Sparta blocked French access from possible trade routes? Would that not push me to form colonies to replace that loss trade? I'm never joining your Republic that would only happen if God Forbid I was totally beaten and wiped out.

Understandable, but colonies is an extremely expensive process for a nation to go through, and you know that the majority of the settlers of the colonies are the people who want to leave the mainland in the first place, and sooner or later they will call for independence, and I will be right there to support them

I wouldn't count on you being there to support them that's gonna happen long down the road. Plus Its not like a Oppressing Dictatorship is happening in the France and its easy to blame the revolution that beheaded people in the streets for all the problems that might exist with France. Don't worry should enough those revolution ideals will be erased from your mind when your back and united underneath the banner of the Greater French Empire.

That's why being a small mercantile nation helps- your people go there to gain more wealth, wealth which they only get as long as they retain ties to the homeland.

You will obviously still need to have your ships checked at the blockade.

Having said this, a few cannons, well drilled strong men, and some grapeshot could really pack a punch with a lot of soldiers trying to rush a narrow entrance.

Canister shot is more effective- it turns the cannon into a giant shotgun.
