This is also perfectly true, since it's not like I dislike violence in video games. I play Mass Effect and Gears of War often.

Call of Duty isn't a game - you press a button and a helicopter appears out of nowhere to reduce men to mangled messes. How is that entertainment? You aren't stimulating your brain - the scientifically-proven point of games - you're stomping around a grim, depressing world doing grim, depressing things in the name of "fun". It is the equivalent of turning on your TV to watch war footage, and enjoying it.

Nothing has ever frightened me (me) more than when I've come across some thirteen-year-olds discussing the tactical advantages of one gun over another.

I've had someone try to argue with me that Call of Duty games are more stimulating and entertaining than Total War games. Many tables were flipped on that day.
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

Simulation is something that games like Mass Effect, Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands 2 pull off quite well, unlike Call of Duty, even though the prior three are also shooter games.

What I like about Team Fortress 2 is that "shooting" will get you nowhere but dead - each attack is an individual puzzle, to be solved not with a bigger gun but with some clever maneuvering. It actively encourages creativity, rather than replacing it with military porn.

It's also quite tongue-in-cheek, which goes a long way.

Borderlands 2 is also quite tongue-in-check and hilarious. Mass Effect is a serious game series, but it's fucking awesome for reasons other than the battles, since there's a very intricate storyline and well-built world going on there.

This goes down to what I like about Elfen High, too - we have fight scenes, which are usually stupid, but we don't just have people pull out guns and shoot. If you do that, your writing is boring and I don't read it. (Sorry to tell you this now, boring writers.)

Instead, we have people running around, screaming, and making shit up. Which is what Doctor Who cool, too.

I find fight scenes to be a bit difficult to do with our particular group, really. So I tend to get them out of the way when possible. I like doing them by myself in my own work, but they're annoying in the rp.
