Quick question: Anyone know the difference between a short and long vowel in katakana (one or two of the same individual vowel)? (This is Japanese, yes.)

I'm trying to identify if I should use a single-I katakana or a double-I in order to replicate the word "I" in English, while using Japanese Katakana.
If you see I've made a mistake in my wording or a factual detail, telegram me and I'll fix it. I'll even give you credit for pointing it out, if you'd like.
