Remus Lupin is my favourite character. He's surrounded by extreme personalities, but remains moderate and sensible.
Also, I first read the books when I was 9 and his werewolf-ness came across as metaphorical in a way I could very much relate to. I don't think that's what Rowling intended, but that's what I took away from it and it was a time when I really needed to feel like somebody understood.
I do think I read that she said somewhere that Lupin's lycanthropy is intended to be metaphorical in the same way the X-Men are metaphorical -- Different with a capital D.
Such stories can mean anything you want, and will.
