I will not deny this. I've sort of been Mav-ing it up for a while, yes, but real life comes first.

It was a fun subplot, though, even if it was a bit stupid.

It was actually going to be a somewhat epic journey, introduction to a greater thing, informing a lot about vampirism and a few other twists about the big bads...

Then I realised I had the people who would not be able to post. :p

Okay, so the bullshit explanation is somewhat plausible, the flag thing is fixed (to my Google-fu knowledge), and it should adhere to basic economics Nat. Or I hope it does. This is the one that should be linked to in the reserved spot.

I also went ahead and expanded a little bit on the dissent section to make the explanation seem more plausible. You're welcome.

Name: Syria
Leader: Sarieha Al Khatib [Mujahideen]
Flag:
Image

Composed of: Syria in our present day.
Language(s): Official language is Arabic, although many people here also speak English.
Description:

The Syrian uprising ended in 2017 with hundreds of thousands of civilians and military dead, the government finally overthrown, and a new intern government instilled. However, to the horror of the many human rights groups and political activists in Syria, the new government became repressive and increasingly totalitarian, as militant Islamic sects gained power in the region through political activism in Mujahideen, the state-sanctioned political party.

The first to go was freedom of the press, as the media was gradually censored until the only news source available was the state sanctioned media. The BBC, Al Jazeera, and other news sites were blocked by filters suspected to be coded by a Chinese corporation, which is known for coding what is known as their Great Firewall in the 2000s. Political dissidents in Syria (including numerous bloggers) were summarily rounded up, arrested, and executed, often with only a show trial to determine their guilt.

Rumors came to light that the government had implanted moles in the numerous political parties in Syria in order to keep them in check and keep them from rebelling, but this has never been confirmed, and the government suppresses all such rumors with great aplomb.

By 2020, Syria was, effectively, a one-party state. Although numerous political parties exist within Syria and there are elections once every five years to elect a new president, there are no term limits and the populace already knows which party is going to win the election ahead of time. It is suspected that the government stuffs the ballot box and/or throws out ballots for any opposition party that is not the main party in Syria.

Syria is currently a haven for numerous Islamic terrorist groups, and it is suspected that it is a manufacturer of chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction. There are also rumors of an Alawite genocide occurring even in the present day, but the government and the state-sanctioned media deny this.

Characters from here: n/a
Changes since magic was revealed:

Magic was public knowledge in 2012 [as everyone else keeps telling me], in the middle of the Syrian civil war, but this information was suppressed soon after the rebels came to power, right after the suppression of free press. This wasn’t perfectly successful, and even now, people in rural areas claim to know people with special powers from Allah, and there is a black market for actual magic cures.

Magic gained relevant importance (again) to government officials in 2020, after the destruction of Cairo.

The government quickly sent out an official statement that the destruction of Cairo was due to nuclear warfare by the United States and other Western countries, suppressing any report that would suggest that magic had anything to do with its destruction and executing those who dared to toe the official party line in regards to Cairo.

Behind the backs of the public, however, the government approved of various studies to study the effects of magic and possible military use. Investigators were chosen for their adherence to the party line and their loyalty to the party in power, and at the first sign of potential dissent, they were arrested and executed.

Magitech is currently used to further secure Mujahideen’s hold of governmental power, and use of magic by the civilian populace (especially in urban areas) is suppressed out of fears that magic would give the people weapons needed to instigate a second uprising. This simply drove the use of magic in general underground.

Many political dissents (labeled domestic terrorists by the state) use magic as a means of protest; the results of these protests are suppressed and hidden by the government, although rumors are abound. Mention magic by name in the presence of a government spy or surveillance device (and they are EVERYWHERE), and the government will up their secret surveillance to see whether you’re connected to various resistance groups and they will try to find anything that they could use to create trumped up charges, arrest you, and send you off to distant concentration camps in Iran or Iraq for “interrogation” and eventual execution. Anyone who uses magic is subject to immediate execution, although the government will appease the public by holding a show trial for magic users.

It is possible that the government turns a blind eye to terrorists using magitech to effect their Islamic agenda, but this has not been confirmed by any outside source.

Alright, I'm retaking control of Laz and Richard if I need them.

Ende, you can try to rejoin as some new character if you have the time in your RL, but I don't want any potential subplots to end up backfiring like that again.

Ende, you can try to rejoin as some new character if you have the time in your RL, but I don't want any potential subplots to end up backfiring like that again.

Let's just go on a basis that I'll post with them when I have the time, but when you need them, just sweep them up and use them immediately.

That's fair enough, right?

The issue is that I don't know when you'll have the time or not, so I often wait two or three days out of politeness and then the moment slips by, because you're often online even if you're not often posting.
Hi! I'm Khan, your local misanthropic Indian.
I wear teal, blue & pink for Swith.

If you want a good rp, read this shit.
Tiami is cool.
Nat: Night's always in some bizarre state somewhere between "intoxicated enough to kill a hair metal lead singer" and "annoying Mormon missionary sober".

Swith: It's because you're so awesome. God himself refreshes the screen before he types just to see if Nightkill has written anything while he was off somewhere else.

It's Nightkill. He's been there so long he rents out rooms to other people at a flat rate, but demands cash up front.
