Personally I thought Celeborn would be able to escape at the cost of his guards...
but everyone else seems unanimous on the party wipe

I think Celeborn could get into Lorien, we are fighting just outside the forest, while his guards hold the balrog off. As powerful as he may be, no balrog could defeat all of Lorien. And many elves have killed balrogs, at the expense of their own lives.

Well we have Galadriel, she is at least strong enough to make the Balrog think twice. If Glorfindel and Ecthelion can do it, Galadriel, more powerful than both, can too.

You do have Galadriel. And while she can make the Balrog think twice the Balrog could do a ton of damage before either getting defeated or advancing in the other direction.

This may be a rather inappropriate time to go, but it's 11:45 pm in the UK so I might have to go off, I'm rather busy tomorrow, however I might be able to stay up for 15 minutes or so, I'l probably be able to manage.

If you need to I am fine you you moving Gandalf around, say if he is just sitting there doing nothing just get him to leave. If the elves ask for help he would accept and immediately go there to help the elves, however although I am fine with people taking my character over I'm not sure if a co-op or op would allow it, so you might need to check first.
