I'm not saying you did friend. I'm just saying a shorter pike is not weaker. On the contrary, it could be considered stronger as it has a less chance of snapping. Though you'd need to go into width by length to determine the possibility of that. Something, which I am not keen on doing at the moment.

I'm clearly not as big a Tolkein fan as you guys, anyone mind providing me a link so i can study the history of Ungoliant and Shelob and such, the magical creatures of middle earth are what ineterests me most

Ungoliant is a giant spider,and I mean a GIANT spider.
