Not completely, most Mordor fortresses are in fact carved from mountains of black or just dark stone, with metal girders and ribs added on for support - Barad-dur is a perfect example, as is Dol Guldur.

I don't know about Barad-dur, but Dol Guldur was an elven fortress, so it wasn't build by Mordor

Also, Prusseuss, are you a fan of Warhammer Fantasy? I thought I recognized that pic you posted as a Druchii or some noble rank, but I wasn't sure.

Yeah,Dark elves.Favorite faction other than skaven.

Interesting to find another Warhammer fan on a LOTR thread! Are there any W40k or WF threads here? I haven't scanned the multiverse forum in while, but I wouldn't mind joining one on this site if it's decent, with good RP'ers.

Ah, my apologies, forgot Dol Guldur was originally elven. Barad-dur is mostly stone as far as I know, but much of the outer 'skin' is layers of black iron. Angband, if memory serves, and Utumno were both delved deeply into stone of mountains, the former actually having been a part of the Ere Engrin, yes?

Oh, bugger, forgot we're talking about Mordor specifically. I can't say anything about Minas Morgul as that was originally Minas Ithilien, but I would still argue they mostly use dark stone ribbed and girded with iron supports and bulwarks and whatnot. Making fortresses entirely of iron would be impossible, and completely wasteful in terms of time and resources - even orce aren't quite that stupid!

I agree. Maybe they have an outer layer of iron for defense?

Yes, that's what I was thinking, with the majority of the structure being dark stone.

Eh, without sources, Mordor's fortresses are dark stone (basalt/granite) reinforced with iron in structural supports. A full iron layer on any decent sized citadel would just be silly.

In his vision at Amon Hen, Frodo Baggins perceived the immense tower as "wall upon wall, battlement upon battlement, black, immeasurably strong, mountain of iron, gate of steel, tower of adamant...Barad-dûr, Fortress of Sauron".

I'm fairly certain it is, since afaik "adamant" is a descriptor, not a real substance in LotR.

Iron-skinned mountain, I believe - also, do realize that's Frodo's perception - he's no military engineer, and he's already afraid of Sauron, so I wouldn't trust his perceptions to much. Also, do not Tolkien often writes metaphorically, so it's likely more so symbolic that literal.

I doubt even Sauron could build a tower of iron that was nearly a kilometer and a half tall - it would need to be mostly stone as I doubt even that much iron could be mined from Mordor to build something that would literally mass over three hundred million tonnes of pure iron if it were made of iron alone.
