Maybe. I can't really tell. It sounds similar to Two Steps From Hell so it is hard for me to gauge what I heard, especially when that kind of orchestral music doesn't really grab my attention in trailers.

Top Gear plays quite a variety of music, actually. I've heard things from Sigur Ros (A fantastic live band) on their Icelandic episode (Makes sense), to Portishead, to I think maybe even Awolnation but I can't quite place what the other thing was on the top of my head.

Well, I am the type of person who does notice music that surprises other people. It takes a person who notices little things to be a fan of ambient music.

On another note, Top Gear does have a rather good selection of licensed music. There is something uniquely great to hearing Preliator during a seventeen mile race across London involving Hammond on a hybrid bike, Clarkson on a boat, May in a Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, and the Stig using public transport.

On an unrelated note, there is something disconcerting to hearing Jonsi right before a murder happens on Criminal Minds.

As to more examples, one quick search has actually provided a good representation of just how likely it is that you have heard their music. Spider Man 3 used Mighty Rivers Run; Astroboy and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End used Glory Seeker; Spiderman 2 used Preliator; X-Men 3 used Emergence of Empire; Defiance used Journey to the Front; John Adams used Where Mighty Rivers Run. Those are just the ones that were in that video that I could recognize.

Things get really odd when you'd think the soundtrack would already have music sufficient for the task yet they license Globus anyway, such as the Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. That does say something odd when they can have a Hans Zimmer soundtrack and they still feel the need to call-up Immediate.

To me, the subtitle of the thread is referencing that the Prometheus Foundation is rising above all overs to take it's place in leading mankind into the future.

Or something like that. I was gonna also reference it with a plotline involving Abigale starting something called Project Prometheus, which would have basically been uplifting mankin- Err, Earthborn humans, ala Prometheus giving humanity fire. Of course, this was before I decided that Abigale needs to be a villain.

Oh yes, she is still a villain. Just, not the "Murder and carnage" kind.

When I think of rising, I think of a trickster who tricked a powerful entity so that mandatory tributes to said god would involve bones instead of beef (as also happened in the Odyssey, interfering with god-sanctioned beef, bad things happen); said god takes away fire in response to this; trickster steals fire in response to it, is tricked into accepting a person with a box that causes all misery in the world, and spends his time getting his guts eaten by an eagle every day for years on end either ad infinitum or until the only son of said god who happens to actually is half-god free him as a part of his repentance for being tricked into killing his three sons and what was I talking about again?

---

A message from the donors: Name anything after something from Greek or Roman Mythology. It is not as though there is a horrible combination that mythological allegory being extremely common practice among writers and said mythologies being ridiculously cruel. Even if something allegorical does happen since we name ourselves after "Prometheus", it isn't like major allegories would be accepting an entity who will literally cause of all the world's suffering or having our essence destroyed on a schedule and regained just in time to have it destroyed again like clockwork. Should we discover that we would accidentally fit an allegory that would make us suffer great pain, we could go with other people who hopefully never shagged great-granddaughters or had their privates thrown into an ocean or started a war over a beauty contest ran by a person who would die if he saw the contestant's true forms or ate their family members.

"You know what? This foundation should not have to worry about allegories at all. If Verizon Wireless could put out the HTC Droid Eris, I think we are safe as soon as this stupid phone starts doing as I want it too. Why is my smartphone that was named after the Greek goddess of strife, whose Roman counterpart gave us the word "discord", making me increasingly frustrated? Why did it send that letter announcing that the person receiving the email won the contest to three ridiculously powerful people when only one person could win? You know what, I am going to hire a judge who is not qualified to judge between in any fashion before they kill eachother. It isn't like he could be bribed by a hand in marriage that would result in war. Hmm, apparently Vatican City and Monaco are at war with Singapore now... You know what? French that; we'll keep the Greek mythological name; damn the allegories that happen as a result of it!"

I love ambient music if done right. In fact, I'm going through a lot of ambient music again right now.

On an unrelated note, there is something disconcerting to hearing Jonsi right before a murder happens on Criminal Minds.

With some of their newer, more aggressive material that is more dark and gritty then their typical somber music, it would fit a lot better then most of Sigur Ros for something like that.

There's also this older song that would work well, too, and was used in a Dead Space trailer.

They're a band that varies quite a bit if they want to, though it almost always stays under the realm of post-rock with other influences like ambient, jazz, pop, and so on.

Jonsi's solo album is another story however. I think it is classified as "Baroque Pop", whatever that is supposed to mean.

As to more examples, one quick search has actually provided a good representation of just how likely it is that you have heard their music. Geez. So they're the type of thing that is used for everything like Two Steps From Hell, and end up becoming overused. I'd rather companies start choosing other things honestly, instead of just going "We need this type of music! So instead of getting some other band attention or being creative ourselves, let's go the safe route of Two Steps From Hell!".

It was from that solo album of his, so basically easy-listening music that was being used to set-up a mood dissonance right before the unsub attacked his next victim happened.

I have never understood how a song could be "overused" because I consume music in a radically different manner than I would films or other media. To say a song is "overused" to me is very similar to saying that food involves too much amino acid. Disregarding plenty of great pieces before the German Romantic movement changed the way people think of music and experimental music was left to try to make music without melodies, music is often based upon recurring hooks and motifs used within melodies. Even improv jazz uses repetition as there will usually be a lead providing a melody which the other band-members play-off of for their improv. Because lots of great music already uses repetition, it seems odd that repetition would be something I'd ever hear complained about.

"Hmm, the first four notes of the First Movement of Beethoven's Fifth were good, but he reuses those same four notes over and over again. It is clear how he became deaf since he clearly repeats those notes constantly rather than seek constant novelty."

Compare Ut Queant Laxis to Symphony No. 5, First Movement. Both are fantastic pieces but you can see how different the two are in that one uses repetition.

... I still don't get how "overused" is actually a complaint unless a person exclusively listens to music without melodies.

Corrian wrote:Because they're weird I guess?

I actually did some research, and it appears to be because compositions are usually completed well before marketing begins. When that happens, Marketing companies that are hired to promote the films have to get music which fits the trailer well. Film scores tend to be one continuous work where each song flows into the other without break and often involve mostly ambience. Selections tend to be limited to the point where, before them, marketing companies either shaped trailers around the music, license a music library for each trailer in order to get the right song, or simply did not care about the music. Immediate works usually by composing a bunch of songs into albums and then basically using those albums as menus (while albums sold to the public usually are similar to actual albums in terms of cover and title, ones sold to marketing companies tend to have such names as "Post Rock" as though they were parts of a menu) for licensing purpose-made remixes and decompositions based upon notes sent by said marketing about what they need for each trailer often without Immediate even seeing what they are composing for (rather similarly to how animation composers work in that they usually do not see what they are working on).

So, I discovered that the answer is basically that Immediate allows substitutions in their orders and the companies are not the same ones that handle compositions for the film score basically meaning that Marketing Company L never had access to Hans Zimmer to compose for them and need somebody who can shape the music for the trailer.

Still, I did find something nice in that this short documentary put into words an aspect that appeals to me in that their symphonic compositions are "thick". Each individual portion, whether it is the brass section, the choir, the percussion section, etcetera, already sounds appealing to me on its own merits before it is combined into the song. It actually did put into words why I loved every song on Epicon except this one song called "Porque Te Vas" because it is has relatively few layers in that it has a guitar, some very thin woodwind instruments, lead vocals, and a choir (despite how relaxing it may be and how much I may like it in a context outside of a Globus album).
