Still, we would haven't been bankrupt if it wasn't for WWI and WWII and most likely would have held it for longer. And I'm gallful enough to say we could have held it until, the bare max of 1990. I mean France held its colonies, or some of them, until the 60's.

Technically speaking, Zimbabwe was part of the UK until 1980, though I think the details are sketchy. Besides, Britain would have had more international clout to say "back off!" while simultaneously shooting up Gandhi.
