It's not something I like to say, but the fact is that the Russian military is a gargantuan bureacratic machine that produces undertrained, underequipped conscript soldiers with- at best- mediocre equipment, which contributes to Russia's casualty rate in various wars. It's powerful, yes, but one-on-one, Russia loses out.

And yes alot of the people in Afghanistan are now 40-50-60 etc, but at that time the soviets allowed you to be 16 with parent consent (like my father). so it is possible they are still in service

I never said it wasn't, I said Russian troops ARE experienced in combating both organized militaries and dissident groups.

We kicked Georgia's ass easily, the war was so short because Saakashvili chickened out, and the Chechens are still learning their lesson.

He's been trying, which is commendable, probably the only commendable thing Putin has, but the Russian military isn't up to scratch yet. At the moment, it's serves more as an employer than as an effective armed force.

The fact is that Saakashvili's crusade was supported by the populace, so they didn't care that their soldiers were commiting genocide against a minority, or that our Peacekeepers were bombed in the process, so long as the breakaway countries were under their control.

Thats why there training grounds exist. Serbian one is pretty bad-ass, we actually use real fire-power and pretend there is enemy and its like real battle. Also, war is in Slavic blood.
