Joseph Stalin looked over his maps with the aid of his trusted generals.

"Poland," said one of them, "will fall to the Germans within only a few weeks. They cannot defend themselves."

"If we come to their aid," said another, "then we would have to defend on two sides. Their navy is stronger than ours, and they could attack from Koenigsberg."

"What if," said another, "we set up a line east of Koenigsberg, so we could defend against both as a single front?"

"It would be a massive front," said the first, "and why should we? The Poles have no love for us. In any case, our army is in a poor state today."

"If we don't defend Poland," said the third, "then we'll have to face the Germans on our own soil."

Marshal Shaposhnikov, the supreme military commander of the Soviet Union, broke the detente.

"An invasion of Poland will mean a response from the French and British; even they must see how necessary battle has become. I am skeptical that this will lead to any serious military activity, but the British will certainly affect a naval blockade. The Germans won't push their luck."

It was Stalin's turn to speak. He was a fearsome man, who only spoke when he had something to say.

"If we must fight the Germans behind a defensive line, let it be on Polish soil. The Germans are too smart to underestimate us. We shall entreat with them and divide Poland into spheres of influence. They will find this superior to fighting, I think. We have other interest to pursue, first."

Nobody dared to argue.

"The Romanians will have no choice but to give up their land"

"However, tensions between Germany and Poland are rising. If we joins, then we would build stronger ties with the Germans, but we will be dragged into a pointless war."

"If we didn't join, then we would pretty much lose all of our ally."

"But, there is one nation that still have a chance of allying with us, and we won't get dragged into a war."

Meanwhile, Hungary is now declaring a state of emergency, and have mobilizes it's troops on all sides. The reason for all this is unknown, and people are being conscripted into the military. The government said that this was "to protect Hungary from a threat that is already existing for a long time, but managed to stay hidden." The people don't understand on what the government is saying, and they do not believe it either.

In a response to this new Hungarian mobilization, the Soviet Union moves a few more heavy assets to the Kiev Front - to the Romanian and southern Polish border. It does not yet increase its conscription or undergo a mass mobilization, but air assets, including several wings of I-16 fighters and a few new TB-3 Bombers, are quietly moved south, taking forces evenly from the Minsk and Leningrad Fronts.

(at this time, the USSR does not share a border with Hungary, so that's all we can do)

Mussolini strode back and forth across the carpet. He then sat down at his desk and looked at the papers currently on top of the desk. One was an order to build 2 more battleships in the ports of Italy. The other was a message to Germany, stating that Italy will support them in any war. He also had ordered that some reserves be called up and sent north, and asked for volunteers to go to the Libyan colonies. He signed all three and got on with his day.

Brazil.

A vast majority of the Brazilian Military had mobilized, they along side the Argentinians were in the process of planning an invasion of Uruguay and Paraguay, the deal was that after the war the territories of Uruguay would be annexed into Argentina whilst the territories of Paraguay would join the Brazilians, however, the Brazilians had other plans. They would allow the Argentinians to do all of the, 'heavy lifting' before sending their forces into both territories, and swiping not only the Paraguayan and Uruguayan forces out, but also the forces of Argentina in these sectors. They knew betraying an ally like this was risky, however Brazil knew it's forces were vastly superior technologically, and if they could do it, why not? This would inevitably bring their alliance to an end, but it would however open up the possibility of territorial expansion into the northern provinces of Argentina and the extra man power from Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay would be invaluable in Brazil's future campaigns across South America. These plans however were open to change, but they seemed to be the best, for the super powers in Europe would be too pre-occupied with their own problems, none of them would have the time nor resources to care for what happens to the South Americans..

(I'm essentially going to build a South-American Empire, whether it's through diplomacy or Military strength.)

In a preliminary, stand-by mode, the armies of Russia were divided as follows:

WESTERN THEATER:
This theater got the majority of forces, in all respects. In fact, it was divided up into three fronts - the Leningrad front, the Minsk front, and the Kiev front, allowing systematic C&C for all aspects of the fighting. Overall headquarters is the Stavka in Moscow. This is the best-developed, best-fortified part of the Soviet Army, and has the newest and latest equipment: The T-26 and BT-7 tanks, the I-16 and TB-3 planes, and the PPD-40 submachine gun. It is also the home of 80% of the navy, divided broadly in half between Northern Navy Command (Leningrad) and Southern Navy Command (Sevastopol).

NORTHERN FRONT:
This is the front facing Finland. Its headquarters is in Murmansk. It is the second best-equipped section of the army, and is kitted (in a halfway-decent fashion) towards winter warfare.

SOUTHERN FRONT:
This is the single largest front. It is tasked with facing down Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, British India, and parts of China. It is the least-loved front, and gets the least attention from Moscow (but one of them has to be). Its forces are stretched quite thinly.

EASTERN FRONT:
This front is in charge of guarding Vladivostok and watching Manchukuo. The Russians are highly suspicious of the Japanese, and have taken some steps to prepare for fighting them. It is the second-best-supported front, and has 20% of the country's naval forces - mostly submarines and small craft.

The elimination of the Habsburg empire had appeared to only serve to create many smaller states which were also allies of Germany, but more dependent meaning that Germany could well start a 2nd World War. Poland was in a weak position, the Soviets wanting its land, the Germans and other smaller states watching greedily for its large areas to become open for expansion. However, maybe it could be helped...

Well, no, they don't put it that way. Their man in London dresses it up in all kinds of flowery language, about how the Soviet Union embraces the principle of neutrality on the world stage, how they suffered so greatly in the last war and how they have no desire to repeat it, and how they have eschewed the ways of war in favor of supporting the industries of peace, and some other stuff about the international fellowship of working people all over the world. Meanwhile, the Soviet intelligence apparatus gears up its activity in the Romanian communist parties. Romania could be a useful ally, if Antonescu were out of the way; the Ploesti Oil Fields would be helpful indeed. Securing those might be a matter of good policy. Of course, should push come to shove, Romania would probably fall quickly if it had to fight on its own, and there were claims on Bessarabia that had to be secured.

One way or another, all roads in the Balkans led to the oil derricks of Ploesti...
