Seriously though, holy shit.

Life expectancy is an average. As such, a large infant mortality rate highly skews the numbers. It's the same reason why everyone seems to believe that people in the Middle Ages died in their 30s when, really, if you made it past 20, you were almost guaranteed to at least see your 70s. I'm sure that's all that it is here, too. Infants are remarkably fragile and susceptible to illness. Still unbelievably awful, mind you.
