Suffering Soul
Stay in Shadow03/11/2019 - ISSR Medical Center
Christopher lay in the bed, covered head to toe in hospital stuff I am not even going to attempt to describe. His swords had been taken, but his necklace of trophies remained at his bedside.
As did the commanding officer of the ISSR, Major General Mohammed Karnik of Pakistan. He sat next to the boy, a cigar between his lips. "So you're the boy who managed to survive Hell." He muttered, impressed. "We have a lot of people interested in you, how you managed to survive, what you experienced." No response from Christopher, not even an indication that the boy was aware of the soldier. "Oh, I get it." Karnik sighed. "You Westerners are all the same. You see one Arab in uniform and immediately become paranoid. What, do you think I'm going to unplug your life support or shove a syringe full of poison into your arm? You'd probably act the same even if I were from India or even the United States."
"No." The boy finally responded. "I just dislike cigars, I'm like a dodongo and dislike smoke. If you would kindly put that out, I would be more than happy to tell you everything you want to know." His eyes shifted to stare at the General. "Provided you give me one last, minor thing. I want to stay and fight."
There were a couple seconds of silence, then the General burst out laughing. "No." He responded flatly, before returning to his laughter. "You are a civilian with no business in a warzone, and I will not be responsible for you dying again. As soon as you are healed you will take the transport home."
Christopher's eyes went back to staring at the ceiling. "Then we are done here, General." He said flatly. "Now leave. I'm exhausted from my travels and require rest.
The Pakistani general sighed angrily, got to his feet, and left.

"You're one stubborn asshole sometimes, bro." Corporal Straga told his roommate and friend. Christopher had healed enough to shed the bandages and casts, but he still wasn't allowed out of the medical center. This was the first day for visitors, and his roommate had decided to check in on him. "All they want to know is how you got here."
"Yeah." Christopher responded, stretching out with his joints audibly popping. "But then they'll send me home."
Justin sighed. "You're not a soldier, Chris. A few years in Cadets several years back isn't the same as actually fighting on the front lines."
"I know, bro." Chris replied. "But... I dunno, there's something telling me to stay here, y'know? Like I lived for a reason. Judging by how everyone's been acting I'm the first human that's made it to the ISSR after dying."
"You'd be right." Justin conceded. "But that still doesn't change the fact you aren't ready for this." He leaned forward. "I just don't want you getting hurt, alright? What would I tell your parents if I came back and you had died?"
Christopher looked Justin in the eyes. "You would tell them that I fought bravely."
Justin angrily got to his feet. "You're a fucking dumbass."
"And you're a dick." Chris responded, with an ear-to-ear grin. "One way or another, I'm sticking around. That's final."
13/11/2019 - ISSR Base Commander's Office
A knock the door drew the General's attention away from intelligence reports. "Come in." He ordered, laying the papers on his desk and leaning back in his chair.
In wheeled the boy who survived. Still in a wheelchair with his left hand in a cast, he entered and made his way up to Karnik's desk. "Straight to business - I'm either staying at the ISSR or you're not getting your precious information." He stated, looking the Major General straight in the eyes. "Even if you want me to prove that I'm up to the challenge of Hell through some bullshit labours first, just promise me that I'll get to stay after my debriefing."
Karnik remained frozen for a second. "Get out." He said, completely emotionless. "Get out unless you have something intelligent to say."
Chris gave an annoyed *pshhh*, turned around, and wheeled himself out of the office.
20/11/2019 - ISSR Medical Center
You know what's more boring than living in a hospital room?
Living in a hospital room with nothing to read. Apparently when setting up the ISSR, someone decided to cut out any form of library - Probably the Saudis, everyone knows just how big of dicks they can get when it comes to literature. So instead Chris spent his time exercizing and recalling all of his old Cadet training. Also, eating. Lots of eating.
So when Major General Karnik and Alexander Horn entered the room, Chris was busy doing squats. "Fifty-three... Fifty-four..." He mumbled to himself. "Fifty-five." He cracked his neck and stood up straight, facing the pair. "What do you want now?"
Karnik moved to speak, but was politely cut off by Horn. "The General her and I have been discussing your requests." He responded, his tone balanced and even. "And we have decided that we really need that information you have. Therefore, we will allow you to stay - So long as you prove yourself capable of living in the ISSR. That means-"
Chris finished Horn's statement for him. "Taking orders, doing whatever I'm told to do, and helping around the base." He hooked his fingers together and extended his arm forwards, palms-out, popping the joints and stretching out the arm. He raised them over his head and yawned. "Got it. When do I start, and what task?"
Karnik smiled. "Today, with your debriefing, in two hours." Without another word him and Alexander withdrew, leaving Christopher alone.
The boy's rise from the ashes had begun.
So I figured I'd actually finish and post this fucking thing, even though I had given up on it due to nobody giving a damn, since I have nothing else to do other than cry at my lack of alcohol.
