Well, the Edema Ruh seem to be based on the Roma, who have a stereotypical image as travelling entertainers, which is what partially inspired the idea of true clowns. The other inspiration was the Krikkit from Life, the Universe, and Everything. I like the idea that things we do for sport and entertainment are an imperfect reflection of an otherworldly species. Plus I just like clowns.

In Italy, the stereotypical image of Roma is: cutthroaths and thieves.
I don't condone said image, but it's quite widespread.
