The Battle of the North Sea

Image

IC

Preceding events

The German Battleship Bismarck, arguably the most dangerous ship afloat, sorties out of Gotenhafen and made for the Danish straits. Before she can be joined by Prince Eugen, she develops a problem with one of her main boilers. The boiler over-pressures and explodes, killing four men. Bismarck is forced to turn back.

Case Anton has been put into action and Vichy France has been invaded. The German First Army is advancing parallel to the Spanish boarder and the Seventh are making a bee line for Vichy and Toulon. A key part of Case Anton is Operation: Lila. The objective was to capture intact the units of the French fleet at Toulon, in order to bolster the Kriegsmarine which had suffered heavy losses during the Battle of Norway. Elements of the 7th Panzer and 2nd SS Panzer divisions are moved into Toulon with the express aim of preventing the Vichy French fleet from scuttling itself at anchor.

The German units enter Toulon at 0400 and take Fort Lamalgue by 0430. The French are taken completely by surprise and all inside the Fort are arrested, including Admiral Marquis. The only fatality of the storming of the Fort was Contre-Amiral Robin. Robin was cut down by a German infantry man as he attempted to alert Contre-Admiral Dornon who would in turn order the fleet to scuttle. Because of Robin's death, the fleet is left none the wiser to the impeding attack. By 0445, the main force of German armour has reached the gates of the harbour and the fleet is now alerted to their presence. Guards on the gate try to stall the Germans by pretending to need paper work, however when one Frenchman is shot down by a German officer, the others surrender. This shot triggers the Battle of Toulon harbour as French sailors, realising that they are taken, take up arms in order to buy time for scuttling charges to be prepared.

The action around the ships is short and bloody. More than several hundred French and German troops are killed in the fighting, much of which takes place onboard the ships themselves. The result of the action, a German victory, is that the majority of the scuttling charges are disarmed before they can sink the highly valued vessels. Several ships, including the heavy cruiser Colbert, surrender without a fight as the crews watch German boarding parties storm their comrades. By the time the sun rises, the majority of the fleet is in German hands with those surviving French having surrendered. The captured ships include:

-One modern battleship, Dunkerque
-One Super-dreadnought battleship, Province
-Four Heavy Cruisers, Dupleix, Foch, Algérie, Colbert
-One Light Cruiser, La Galissonnière
-Sixteen Destroyers, Cassard, Aigle, Gerfaut, Lion, Linx, Indomptable, Mogador, Panthère, Tigre, Kersaint, Tartu, Valmy, Vauban, Vauquelin, Vautour, Guépard
-Four Sloops, Impétueuse, Curieuse, Granit, Dédaigneuse
-One Seaplane Tender, Commandant Teste

The only failures for the Germans is that the battleship and pride of the French navy, Strasbourg is destroyed when her forward magazines are exploded. French submarines are also able to scuttle successfully.

All in all, the Germans have pulled off a phenomenal success. The captured ships, when combined with existing German ships, give the Kriegsmarine a formidable power that would not have been possible otherwise.

The Allied invasion is imminent, however with the threat posed by the German surface fleet the invasion force cannot be risked. Until the German fleet is neutralised, the invasion cannot go ahead. One way or another, the Allied combined fleet will have to destroy or blockade the Kriegsmarine once and for all. The battle will be critical, either the allies will prevail and the invasion be free to go ahead, or the Germans will win a stunning victory and delay the invasion indefinitely.

The coming battle will the defining moment of the war at sea, possibly the most well known of all time. It's up to you to help decide the fate of Europe.

The Rules:

1). I am the OP, Iander is the co-OP.

2). One liners to be kept to dialogue only and even then are severely frowned upon.

3). No Godmodding. In other words, no sinking multiple ships in a single post.

4). You cannot sink a major capital ship (i.e. a battleship/battlecruiser) in one post.

5). There are two types of "characters" when playing in the IC:
-Major/Main characters: these will be your flagship characters of whom you'll put the most amount of effort in development into. When interacting with other characters in-game, you're most likely going to be using these characters as they will be your best developed ones. However, you're still able to use auxiliary characters in these situations if you'd like. Major characters require a sign-up application here in the OOC.
-Auxiliary/Minor characters: these characters mainly have the author-assigned purpose of providing another perspective in the RP enviroment. These range from personnel whom are only mentioned in a single post, and those that reappear as minor characters supporting the overall plotline of the RP. Unlike main characters, these characters don't require a sign-up application, though you may put up one if you'd like.

6). Fictional ships are allowed, but they must be either cruisers or destroyers. If you want to make a fictional ship, tell me the name and class and I'll add it to the list.

7). Make sure you know the difference between types of ship (i.e. the difference between a battleship and a battlecruiser). If you don't know, Google it or ask.

Given the threat posed by German surface assets, large numbers of Royal Navy vessels have been retained in European waters. Ships such as Prince of Wales and others, have not been sent to the Pacific.

When signing up, pick which ever command you like provided it's open. Not all of these ships need to be filled, just to keep track of what's available. Listed ships go down as far as Cruisers. If you want a Destroyer, you're welcome to name your own ship and Squadron affiliation. If you can think of a ship that could be involved for either side, do please say and I'll update the list. Ships will be added as I think of them.

The idea for the German players is to inflict as much damage on the Allies as possible without getting engaged by the full Allied fleet. Duking it out with superior Allied numbers and firepower is certain death. In order to draw pieces of the Allied fleet out, the Germans might sortie into the North Sea or bombard parts of the Eastern coast of England or Scotland.

The Allies must keep together and avoid breaking down into bite size chunks, which the Germans can safely pick off. Above all else the Allies want a full fleet engagement where they can crush the Germans.

Yep, all fine, except for the USS Johnston. If it were any other Destroyer in the Pacific, I'd say it was fine but Johnston is a pretty legendary ship. Her captain wins the Medal of Honour for his actions. I mean, it faced down the entire Japanese Centre Force (including Yamato) essentially alone.

Of course, if you're set on being the Johnston then you can but if you wouldn't mind changing ship, that'd be great.

Indeed I can.

USS Allen M. Sumner, lead ship of her class, was in the Atlantic for a brief period of time around March 1944 before being transferred to the Pacific. It would make sense for her to be there.

The minimum we need for Jerry is the fleet admiral and after that we're golden.

For that, I'd recommend either Frenchie or Mikey, if any of them wants it.

Otherwise, I guess I'll have to grab the Admiral's baton.

The minimum we need for Jerry is the fleet admiral and after that we're golden.

For that, I'd recommend either Frenchie or Mikey, if any of them wants it.

Otherwise, I guess I'll have to grab the Admiral's baton.

I concur, Frenchy or Mikey would be the best choice. Though anyone who wants it is open to it. Who ever it is, has to engage HMS Hood. Unfortunately, Hood needs to explode quite dramatically.

How would you return it to Germany? Attach it to helicopters and drop it onto the Rhine?

Actually, yeah, do that.

I would be interested in playing a German officer if you need one.
