A figure detached from the shadows, its image resolving into that of Katya's mother.

"Death is something that comes for most. Even for those who least expect it - but I know that if she was unable to come back, she would want you to be happy," it said, in the elder Dimitrov's voice.

A thin cylinder with a single purple hair inside slid out of the figure's sleeve and onto the closest surface.

There was the soft padding of footsteps.

There was an almost silent opening and closing of the door.

There was the rasping of metal as a Sword was sheathed. An iridescent green glow lit up the corridor; some of the light leaked under the door.

Then it was gone again as the figure tiptoe/sprinted down the hallway.

Bielefeld Tent City was a noisy place and had been all day as equipment poured in to level the ground for construction.

Klaus spent the morning pouring over proposed utility and street maps (his background actually coming in handy for a change) and listening to the city planners. He occasionally offered suggestions as far as defense went, or to address a known issue with what lay under the ground in the way of water tables or obstacles. His only respite came in the form of two Conservators who had stopped by to monitor the odd time fluctuations necessary to speed up construction. He enjoyed a quiet lunch with them before hastening back to work.

Construction materials were top of the line, if not technologically advanced thanks to New Aksarben and the Germanic Templars. Conduits would be denser (and impossible to infect, thanks to Ceril’s protective coating. Power grids would been self-sustaining during emergencies. Water pipes and sewer lines would withstand earthquakes and other natural disasters. Most importantly, access passages would be clean and brightly lit to keep city crews safe. Even the planned subway and rail lines would have features to enhance their speed without compromising public safety.

Minerva’s lads had been equally busy coordinating supply drops with materials necessary for building construction. They were on time, on schedule, and not a penny into their budget yet. Soon shipments of materials from the BranRiech… mostly the raw stuff of concrete… would arrive.

Someone posted a hand drawn map on a notice board and everyone from cultists to city officials to those dropping off supplies could have a point of reference to look at.

"But of course," he inclined his head. Looking about, he judged the environment, and then dug out a few ounces of rare earth minerals to leave on the table.

"Bartering," he said apologetically. "It's easier than carrying around several different types of paper money. I hope that covers it."

Ceril shelved a book and drew four more. His goal was to systematically read through the imperial library. Progress went well though the hard sciences and philosophy, the medical texts were informative but the Templar history was complex.

His eyes scanned the pages rapidly, the blocks of text forged to memory in an instant. He'd analyze everything at a later time. His purpose today was to copy information and move to the next text.

Silvery eyes blinked every ten minutes to keep the optic receptors clear of dust. He didn't bother to mimic breathing; his bionic respiratory system didn't require his diaphragm to move. He was in his machine element. It was soothing.

Time elapsed and he disregarded its passage.

Klaus rifled through blueprints. Keeping everyone content was proving to be an arduous task. A stop at the mess tent was indicated. Nothing was better than piping hot coffee for clearing the mind.

The Vaffelhelm ruins steamed in the distance. Morning fog never appeared to dissipate from the blackened land. Klaus wondered how well Atosh was getting on there. The god was apparently content to squat in the old sub base.

Klaus shrugged off his concerns. Let the temperamental bastard rot. Klaus had more pressing matters at hand.

Deuce ventured from his room to grab breakfast. The formal dining room didn't have chairs large enough for his build. He took his plate to a balcony and leaned against the wall while eating.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

"Roger, flaps down in landing postion, begin descent." The pilot's cool voice spoke over the radio to his co-pilot. He reached over to the flaps lever and adjusted them correctly as the craft began to slow down considerably. "Landing gear down." He nodded to the crewman in charge of the 26 tank-like treaded landing gear sections and he lowered them down into landing postion.

"Landing gear down, on final approach for landing. Topographical imaging shows that the area is perfect for a smooth landing."

"Roger, landing clearance authorized, you are cleared to land. They already know we're coming."

The craft sped low over the water, decreasing speed as it descended farther still, heading towards the ground at an acceptable approach vector. In its belly, a huge load of concrete and rebarb for the new cities reconstruction in an attempt to strengthen relations with the small city-state after some particularly ice-y situations in the past.

Bran was wandering the other side of the library with Rachelle. He picked her out a few children's books on space and the like while he searched for a copy of the Communist Manifesto.

She awoke the following morning with the urge to take advantage of the good weather. Maybe a picnic, if she could find anyone interested in going with her.

Katya awoke to find the cylinder with the hair. She was terrified, saddened, happy, and emotional all at once.

Was that mother in my dream? Was it even a dream? No...I wasn't asleep...it was all real. It was someone she knew, I hope...

She took the cylinder and held it in her hand, looking at it for a while. She shed a single tear, smiled, and put it carefully in the front pocket of her blazer before getting up and stretching.
