Swith Witherward wrote:"I don't do well in new settings," Naomi admitted. "I've only been in existence for a short time and I don't get out much." Her eyes met his and she laughed. "Isn't that ridiculous? I'll be fine."

In existence? "Well," Luce answered thoughtfully, "perhaps you could tell me more about your experiences as we go." He was pleased to see she was no pushover.

"You people and stairs," Swith laughed, remembering the steep flights she and Thriller climbed. "Lead the way, Commander!"

She set off behind him, with Blythe, Ceril and Co following.

Blythe was quickly growing concerned because she couldn't find Superbia. She assumed he'd also been stuffed in a sack, and she also assumed he'd worked his way out and gone off in search of her.

"Certainly, Luce," Naomi agreed, "But it's only fair that you share yours as well. I didn't have much of a chance to talk to any of your people, and I don't understand the need for baby trees." She noticed the rest of the group departing and motioned for Luce to join her.

They all are captivated by the sights of the palace, each enjoying the tour they are reviving. they keep there eyes open trying to get a grasp of the social standards and culture to appear more polite. At the word library they all turn and begin walking after saying their thanks. One look at the library and the start setting up sleeping bags.

Fond memories flooded Naomi's mind. "Oh, Dora is wonderful. She first came to us when we were on the island, and she was so quirky and fun, but I'm pretty shy so I didn't get to speak with her much. After that one battle, she came in very battered and Swith had me bring baby trees for her to use to revive. I need to ask her about those trees. She was always busy with other residents, though, and I was always busy elsewhere. Ships in the night, Luce."

Swith returned to her suite and gave the twins a bath. She opened her coin purse and placed their clothing in their closet, and then give them their plushy microbes to snuggle with. A bedtime story and a glass of water later, each of them had fallen asleep.

She let herself into Bran's room a short time later, once Chi showed up to watch the twins, and shook Rachelle's drawing table and chair from her purse. She put these in a corner and then tacked up Rachelle's horse and a few pieces of paper so it could run free in that little space.

She went to NVE and Gretta's room and shook out a small refrigerator. It was an odd device that would provide a body part each time it the door was opened. Sometimes it would be a beef shank and other times it might be a pigs head, but there might be the occasional pizza deliveryman part as well... if no humans were around.

She also left some toys the chicks might enjoy, and some odds and ends that they could use to build something fun... but nothing too deadly.

Her final stop was Ceril and Naomi's suite. She'd packed Eva's favorite things and clothing, and also Marcus' school texts and clothing.

She returned to her room, had a long bath and curled up in bed. She was asleep moments later.

Of course, the first thing Bran had wanted to do was find the swimming pool in the palace. He followed the directions down there to the back of the building and into the recreational area.

He found the pool, ignored the spa and such, and de-robed before diving into the deep end of the body of water. He transitioned into Mer form and started doing laps around the pool happily, feeling free.

The sphere winked out just as the Templar ship cleared the top. There was an inward rush of radioactive air and heat. The cultists, immune to the hazards, covered their eyes with arms or hands and then stood in the abandoned tent city. They jostled into various portals or bins, per whatever method of travel they were accustomed to, and left the city (and all hiding characters) to the Nifid.

Harsh light bathed the area, the energy within penetrating the ground up to one hundred meters. Every last living organism was wiped from existence. This process had been occurring all over the area and within the old city. Scenic pastures with lazy cows were vaporized, and even the squirrels darting between trees. If a virus had a mind of its own, it surely would have said, “I am ali-“ before dissolving into nothingness. The spiritual energy was dissipated. Clean was clean.

The Nifid began the arduous task of repopulating it with clean organisms freed from all traces of infection. They repaired magical ley lines which had been strained and thinned by constant use over the last few months. The Gateways surrounding the area were mended and normal spiritual energy allowed to return.

The repopulation went much like the creation stories found in many cultures. First the waters, then the land, then the vegetation followed by animals to include bacteria, microbes, virus and other teensy beings. That was the first day. The Nifid, unlike gods, didn’t believe in the whole “resting” concept. To call them a god was to insult their intelligence. They did pause to make certain the entire ecosystem was flawless and self-sustaining and then moved on to implanting a few things to aid the environment in defending itself against the asinine assaults constantly visited upon it by the sapient creatures that dared to call themselves masters just because they had opposable thumbs.

The following morning would reveal a pristine area of the earth untouched by pollution or disease. Massive forests surrounded the basin. Lakes, rivers and streamed wend through the landscape on their way to the ocean (the bay itself now had a thriving coral reef) and small crabs darted along the white sandy beaches and waved claws at the sun.

The cultists could now network with the various agencies that had offered material to rebuild the city with. Shipments would arrive from New Aksarben and the Templars. Manpower wasn’t necessary. The cultists and Nifid could work faster without them. The cultists did graciously accept supplies offered by nations on earth but they used them to help those nations rebuild what was lost; it would have been unfair to take anything when so many people in those nations needed aid. Donated food was likewise sent to those nations; the population of the old city wouldn’t return until construction was completed.

The Nifid also repaired the orbital weapons that had been used to defend the earth but a harsh admonishment went with them: turn them on the new city without just cause or permission from the city government and risk Nifid wrath.

New Aksarben was monetarily compensated for the loss of the two ships that had been destroyed when the Nifid activated their defenses. The lives on board those ships were a different matter but the Captain of the Utility would suddenly find twice the amount of crew as cultists opened small portals and let them through. Not a single life from those two ships had been lost on that fatal day. Extra rations were provided for the journey home. (The Captain of the Valkyrie had also taken time to board the Utility, with her Captain’s permission, and a bottle of fine scotch was shared between the two men.)

The old city was left to rot as a reminder of the futility of war. Only the sub base remained, a solitary structure set against a bleak landscape. It was still active, though. Atosh had set up residency there and most of the supplies were being stored there until construction began. Everything was accounted for and reports fed back to contributing nations so accountability was maintained.

City officials gathered in a new tent city… still dubbed Bielefeld for whatever reason. Plans were drawn up and the Comptroller set to work organizing. Construction would begin soon enough.

A call went out to each nation of the earth and a request was given that each should send an ambassador as a gesture of goodwill. (These ambassadors will forever be NPCs and not player characters.) The city had always been a sovereign city-state and remain so, but perhaps the presence of ambassadors would cut down on the senseless tomfoolery visited upon the people. The government of Bielefeld sought to establish agreements with other nations, not only for trade but also for defense, especially those nations that bordered Bielefeld. Further, Atosh had offered cultists to help train the sovereign city-state’s military so they could better defend their beloved land.

Monetary donations from other nations would be specifically used for public spaces like parks or the hospital or libraries and schools, but the Nifid provided funds necessary to equip the military to a state of readiness using the technology available on Earth. All that would have to wait, however, until the city was rebuilt…
