Backstory: He was always good at fixing things, and always at the top of his class in school. It wasn't until he was 8 years old that the 'hunger', which is how he described it, appeared. He was sent to the academy after he tried to kill another boy with an ability (Trent maybe? I don't know...) and has been there ever sense, trying to control the 'hunger'. He's doing better, but he still isn't in full control, which is why he is still in Venios.
