W40K: In Service to the Imperium: Episode 3 (IC)

Postby Legital » Fri Mar 01, 2013 4:30 pm

Epsilon Octarious, Epsilon Prime
Lord-General Prectis' Command Board Room
Eight days prior to current time

In the far distance, over the hive spires and jutting towers, hive structures and manufactorums, a war waged on. As the sun began to fold below the horizon, plunging the already bleak and cloudy sky into darkness, the far horizon began to look like a massive display of fireworks, such as one that could been seen on Tera for Emperors day or Candlemas. But it was no holiday. It was no day or time to be celebrating. There was no joy out there on that far horizon, no happiness. Only death and fear gripped those reaches of his view, and machines of all kinds played out destruction.

General Fedicious stood on the balcony of the upper hive spire ball room, standing alone. It was a cold and windy night, but with all of the atmospheric disturbances recently, he found himself surprised there were no major rain or lightening storms yet. But he supposed there would be one soon, as it would come eventually. Like the unending tide of heretics. He thought bitterly. The war was going bad. It was going very bad, and Fedicious feared that they would all face their deaths soon by the hands of Chaos, offered as foul sacrifices to dark gods in slow agonizing deaths.
He shivered. His mind was treading troubled water now, and the crisp air was getting to him this high in the sky. It would probably be warmer down in the lower sections of the hive, he figured, and without giving much more thought to the matter, Fedicious turned around to head back into the board meeting which was in a small moment of recess currently, as Prectis found himself dieing of thirst. So, naturally, he orders a selection of the finest amsec to be brought up. Fedicious paused for a moment as he closed his eyes, and he let out a long sigh, which came out as a white puff in the cold air. Prectis was going to be the death of them. That man would lead them all to their deaths in the name of himself, and do so in such a way which would guarantee the loss of Imperial hold of the planet. The Lord-General had already, since his brief time in command, ordered several purges amongst the core command to weed out incompetency. Fedicious shivered again, this time out of disgust. Looking up at the large window before him, he watched as the gathered generals and officials nervously and uncomfortably sipped at their wine and amsec, while Prectis was on his third glass.
Lord-General Prectis was in his middle years, with a stout and noticeable stomach jutting over his belt line. His hair was light and balding, and his jowls were pudgy and pale. He sat casually as if he was at a party, not sitting at a table to speak with the high command of the Imperial Guard and Navy over the situation of the war.
Utterly disgusting. He thought, walking towards the glass door inside, prepared to listen to the nonsense the man would no doubt soon start spewing.

Suddenly, Prectis stood from his spot, and slammed his hands down on the table, causing some glaces to stir and almost fall over. Many of those gathered looked alarmed and eyed Prectis in a shocked way. Then Prectis began to shout and rant, and Fedicious moved his hand off of the door handle to listen quietly.

"-fools, all of you! You have let this all happen! We would not be scared of defeat if you all knew your duties and did not question orders! We would not be in this situation if you all were competent enough to carry out your duties granted to you by the God-Emperor himself! I've had it with this despicable and disgraceful gathering! None of you are worthy of holding your given ranks!" He yelled, and suddenly Fedicious had a terrible feeling in the bottom of his stomach. Something was off; this was not the usual reprimand. Scanning the room, Fedicious noticed the aides were gone, along with Commissar-General Yatenic. Commissar-General Yatenic was missing.

Stepping back, mouth agape, Fedicious began to panic. No one else saw it, but he did. Oh God-Emperor did he see it. Prectis continued raving on, and all of the gathered members looked back at him with their undivided attention, least they were punished. Fedicious wanted to call out, to tell them to save themselves now, but it was no use and he was too late.

There was suddenly a large commotion as the several doors into the hall were kicked down, and armored kill teams of Commissariat Stormtroopers filled the room. Immediately, with deadly precision and accuracy, they began to systematically kill all of the gathered members of the meeting, save for Lord-General Prectis who stood unharmed with a pleased smile on his face, his hands still placed firmly on the long table.

The uproar was tremendous as men, men of all status and experience, invaluable experience, were killed before his very eyes. Men who he had known for years and served beside, all being slaughtered for misplaced failure.
In the time it began, it was over as quickly. Fedicious found himself gripping his chest as his heart raced frantically, and his other hand gripped his chrome ceremonial saber at his hip. He looked on in horror at the dead men sprawled around the room, and a second later, there was more shouting as three stormtroopers rushed their way towards the balcony where Fedicious stood alone.

They fell upon him like birds on the cadavers of a dead animal. His knee was kicked in sideways by one of the three stormtroopers, and his old bones snapped under the force of the armored boot. He cried out, falling down, and then he was painfully jerked upwards by the collar of his dress white uniform.
He looked up with a pained face at the three stormtroopers around him, and he was barely able to stammer out any words. "W-why?!" He choked out, and suddenly he felt the cold barrel of a bolt pistol pressed firmly against the side of his head. One of the stormtroopers stood unmoving, but took a glance at one of the others.
"Orders, sir." He said simply, motioning at the man who held the pistol to his head.

Orders. Fedicious thought, trying to reassure himself. It's only orders.
And every good Guardsmen obeys his orders.

Epsilon Ocatrious, Epsilon Prime outskirts
Present day

The sky was the color of pitched ugly tar, and smoke billowed so thickly in the area, it appeared as if a dusty brown fog had descended down upon the land. The terrible sound of the god-machines themselves was deafening as they fought through the destroyed structures of the lower hive, fighting to the bitter end as they brought destruction to enemy titans or rained down plasma heated death upon scores of Imperial and Chaos forces as they clashed viciously all around the beginning of the hive buildup, or the latter chasing down and slaughtering the routing former. Battle of all kind raged all around the outer sections of the hive, to the distinctive thump of heavy artillery or the high pitched whine of rockets. It was all heard.

Higaran Commissar Gregory Gustav was alone, and he was running. He ran as fast as his body allowed him too, his wounds permitting as well. The destroyed street was empty of any living soles apart from himself as he ran for his life away from the kill teams of Chaos Marines and heretics in this sector, searching for wounded Imperials to capture and bring back for the body pyres or sacrifice pits.
His knee-high boots were covered in a mixture of mud and blood as he moved down the constricted street, which was filled with bodies of the Imperials and archenemy, all in various states of dismemberment and poses of death.

In his haste, his commissar peaked cap nearly fell off of his head, but he quickly caught it before it did, and he felt two holes in the cloth from stub rounds passing through it. That caused him no reassurance.
But he did not stop. Stopping meant death, and he had to find a way to make it out alive, or group up with survivors and mount counter attacks on the archenemy forces.

Breathing laboriously, he stopped for a brief moment to take in the destroyed street and to catch his breath. His hand firmly clutched his bolt pistol, prepared to kill any heretic he found.

Well.
This hellhole went from bad to worse. I might even say it's worse than Necromunda. I'm covered almost exclusively in blood, and I only have two charge-packs left.
Oh, did I mention that I'm deep behind enemy lines, hiding out in a bombed out tower and taking potshots at cultists that pass by?
No?
Well I am.
"Wait- a commissar?" I ask myself, incredulous. What the hell? Why... Never mind. I just wanna get out of here alive, and if that means not contacting a member of the commissariat, so be it.

Matthew groaned quietly, his vision a little blurred. He shook his head and regretted it quickly, grabbing his temples and letting out a pained moan. The explosion had knocked him clean off his feet and worse than that, his Lasgun was no longer in his arms. He looked around himself for a moment, the pain in his head slowly fading. There! A few feet away, right in front of him was his M36. That Lasgun meant the difference between life and death now. He was just a lowly Imperial Guardsman. It was practically his job to die for the Emperor. But he didn't care about his job or his duty. He cared about what he needed. This simple, burning need to LIVE for her. For Taylor. The God-Emperor it seemed had abandoned him, his commanders had fled, his comrades were dead and those that weren't had likely joined the Archenemy. Chaos. He could be easily converted to the forces of Chaos if not for his faith and his beliefs. Many Guardsmen relied on their faith in the God-Emperor, their belief in him, to keep them from straying into the clutches of Chaos. But not Matthew. What little faith he'd had in the God-Emperor to begin with was shattered long ago. All that remained now was his faith in her and the knowledge that his failure or worse, treachery, would bring suffering on her. If he died, she would be devastated. She'd told him herself, just before he left. True love is when you plan your entire life for two and if that other person just suddenly goes away forever, the entire plan and your life as a whole falls apart. He couldn't let her go through that. But worse than that, if he failed or betrayed the Imperium...If Chaos won, they would eventually his home planet, Gudrun, and then his family, his friends and Taylor would all suffer terrible fates. That was what he fought for now. Not for the God-Emperor or the Imperium of Man. Not even for his fellow Guardsmen or himself. He didn't fight out of hate for Chaos or its minions. He fought for love. For the people he cared about. Nothing else mattered to him now but getting home alive and protecting that home no matter the cost.

It was his drive to LIVE no matter how hard it might be, that pushed him forward. Made him dig his gloved fingers into the ash and rubble and literally CLAW his way forward. He could hear footsteps behind him. One of the many Traitor Guardsmen coming to finish him off or sacrifice him or whatever it was they did. Matthew's fingers curled around the grip of the M36 and he rolled onto his back, pulling his heels in against him and pushed the barrel between his knees. It would've been pretty embarassing to shoot his own feet off after all. Fortunately, he'd learned this little technique from some Veteran Guardsmen. He lined up the iron sights on his weapon with the surprised, disfigured face of the Traitor Guardsman that bore down on him with a wicked looking knife. Without a word, Matthew squeezed the trigger and watched the lance of light shoot forward and burn through the man's face and into his brain, dropping him to the ground like a sack of rocks. Matthew grunted and clambered to his feet, moving over to the man and rolling his corpse over so his chest was to the sky. The young Guardsman hurriedly stripped the Chaos soldier of his power packs, shoving each one into the empty pouches on his own belt before continuing on down the ruined street. Laser beam zipped over his head and scorched a wall behind him but Matthew didn't stop, he started to run down the street, hearing Lasers impact all across the walls behind him. The beam hitting him wasn't a problem, it traveled at light speed. The handler of the weapon was the problem. Likely driven mad over the course of the battle, the Chaos Traitor Guardsman likely had trouble standing still, let alone aiming a rifle. Matthew abruptly dodged right into an alley and out of the line of fire. He leaned around the corner carefully, slicing the pie was the term for the tactic used by Mercaneries, Veterans and others of their sort. Matthew's sights found the red smeared chest of a Traitor Guardsman and he fired off a short volley of shots that slapped into the Chaos minion's Flak Armor and eventually cut through, burning his heart and lungs and killing him. The man's dying screams fell on deaf ears. Matthew had heard it so many times before, on both sides, that it simply no longer effected him. The most traumatic of the screams had come from a young man no older than he that he'd had to run through with his bayonet. That had been unpleasant but necessary.

Clearing his head of the pointless thoughts, Matthew emerged on the other side of the alley and looked down the street, smiling for the first time in a long time at what he saw. A Commissar. Running away. He drank in the sight so deeply he wondered with a laugh if he was being controlled by Slaanesh. He looked down at the rubble next to him and noted another Commissar, buried up to his waist and thoroughly dead from several laser shots to his torso. Matthew understood the need for the Commissar, but it didn't make him hate them any less. He plucked a Bolt Pistol from the corpse and clipped it to the back of his belt before casting his gaze back up the street at the Commissar. Was there a chance his black and grey uniform had helped him blend in sufficiently to avoid detection? No. He could see him look right at him. Better to approach voluntarily like a good soldier than get shot in the back while trying to hide or escape. Keeping his head ducked low, Matthew darted down the street and eventually over to the Commissar's side.

I belong in a jungle. Roger was warily limping through the ruins, careful to hug the shadows as to not to take a chance at being spotted by the heretic scum. I belong in a jungle. Roger grit his teeth holding back a groan from the pain shooting up his leg from the shrapnel wound he had hastily stitched up after removing the shrapnel. That goddamn explosion, I swear it came from one of our own basilisks. He let out a low mutter of curses, some idiot, some blind and blatant idiot had called in the goddamn coordinates, he was sure of it. And that idiot cost him his company. His company, all dead except him. They were a brave bunch and he remembered the faces of every last one of them. I'll get out of this, I swear I will, I'll kill the bastard who put together this mess of an operation and then I'll go home and make damn sure these boys are remembered. Roger stopped moving, surveying the area around him, making sure there wasn't any lingering traps from those damned lapdogs of chaos. It was then he saw some movement in a wrecked tower a couple blocks away from his position. A sniper? Roger lifted his sniper rifle, peering down his scope to get a better view of whoever, whatever was in that tower. If it was a cultist who thought he found a clever place to ambush the few that remained of the Guard, well, that bastard had another thing coming. It wasn't a cultist, Roger lowered his rifle. Looked like one of those Krieg troopers. Roger smiled to himself, those Krieg fellows certainly were a tough bunch, he'd seen them in battle before and they certainly weren't anything to laugh at, unlike those damn Mordians, who the hell goes into battle dressed like that? Roger shook his head, this was neither the time nor the place for this. Quietly, he began making his way towards the tower while keeping a wary eye for any chaos worshipping bastards. Just wait for me you kid of Krieg. Roger knew hooking up with that Krieg trooper would be a smart idea. They were a reliable bunch, he remembered hearing that they needed commissars to stop them from charging to far into battle rather than to stop them from running from battle. He grinned again. Well, I suppose that's one thing we have in common, Niether Krieg nor Catachan really need commissars.

3rd Prandium artillery batteries
1 hour prior

Thomas was running ahead, meltagun in hand, and began pointing out positions for the Basilisks of the 212th battery, a series of 28 of the heavy guns. He relayed the position of an enemy battle line and heard and watched as dozens of high explosive shells rained onto the position. He was then cornered by a team of cultists, but he drew his las pistol and managed to dispatch them. Then he heard it, a loud series of explosions marking the end of the 212th, shortly after, a series of explosions were heard nearby and Thomas was blasted into a wall, blacked out

Epsilon Ocatrious, Epsilon Prime outskirts
Present day
Commissar Gustav

Frak. He thought, still taking in deep breaths, how long have I been running? Taking in some more deep breaths, he went over what happened in his head.

Ever since the Higarans fell back to the rear trench and defense line, everything went down hill from there. The heretics and traitor Guardsmen were an endless wave of flesh and crude weapons, who were barely kept at bay by their heavy bolter and stubber emplacements. But when those vile Chaos Marines broke the lines on their flank, they had no choice but to fall back. For what seemed like a mile, the regiment retreated with the archenemy hot on their heels. Casualties were coming in across the board like mad, and there was no way to retrieve the screaming wounded as they were sucked in and dragged screaming into the horde of maniacal heretics. The unbearable dark chanting from the Chaos forces around them was mixed in with the terrible sound of war.

Gustav knew that there was no way to tell the men to stop and form a position. They would not obey the slightest order, nor would they be able to turn around before taking a blade or shot to the back by the archenemy soldiers. Naturally, he did only what he could do. Run.
For perhaps a mile or so, the ragged remnants of the regiment took cover in a warehouse. Yes, now he remembered. That was where one of the titans came upon them. He knew not what kind it was, but the crude twisted metal and daemonic chants coming from its vox horns made it nothing he wanted to observe. But it was there, and grabbing the nearest man to him, he remembered running for the door with the Guardsmen before the god-machine disintegrated nearly sixty men in under five seconds with its massive laser weaponry.
The Guardsmen with him tripped and impaled himself on rebarb, and Gustav could not go back for the dieing man.

But the titan ceased pursuit, now doubt spotting other poor souls to bring to their deaths, and stomped through the buildings off in another direction. Since then, he'd been running. He may have ran another mile or two.

Taking a seat in a pile of rubble on the side of a building, beside the corpses of two Skitaari and an unidentifiable Guardsmen, Gustav removed his grey canteen from his hip and took a generous gulp of water, only to find there was not much left in it. Cursing, he placed it back on his belt, and he leaned his head back against the hard brick wall behind him.
Why won't you come down here? he thought, Oh merciful God-Emperor, we need you. He continued on in his head. The Commissar was weary beyond anything, and he could still hear the fighting going on all around him, even on the distant abandoned street. However, a rustling to his side told him he was not alone.

Gustav raised his Bolt pistol, and looked in the direction of the sound. In the grey and black colors of the rubble, he could make out the shape of a Guardsmen. A living one, looking right back at him. Gustav shifted himself to a kneeling position, and beckoned at the man to come over with his hand.
The Guardsmen quickly came over.

The man was sharp, he could see that, as of the fact that he was asking for orders in this hell-hole. He was expecting the Guardsmen to ask something along the lines of which way for the retreat. Either this was a superb soldier, or one who was dearly afraid of Commissars.

"Trooper Shelton." Gustav said, nodding his head, and in doing so some grey dust fell off of his peaked cap. His voice was deep and heavy, and was rather accented. Gustav was not able to make out the Guardsmans regiment by his uniform, as he had seen hundreds of different uniforms in the past hour.

"Commissar Gustav, Higaran 93th Foot." He said, pausing for a second. "Current orders are... well, we don't have any." The Commissar explained for a moment, taking his near constant scowling glance away cross the street. Looking back at the Guardsmen, he nodded at his arm.
"The arm. How are you holding up, trooper?"

Matthew glanced down at the slain Guardsman next to himself and Commissar Gustav.
"I'm fine, just a grazing wound sir."
he replied, kneeling over the man and rolling him onto his back. He unclipped a canteen from the man's belt and gave it a shake. His own canteen had been lost at some point during the fighting, he didn't know when. Water sloshed around inside the canteen and Matthew uncapped it, taking a small gulp to sate his thirst then passing it to the Commissar.
"Our fallen brothers can still help us fight."
he said, closing the man's eyes.
"Their sacrifices make victory attainable. They're the only reason I still have charge packs for my M36 and the only reason the Archenemy hasn't caught me yet. I hid in a pile of bodies while they passed my position, pursuing the surviving Regiments through the city. You and I can use this tactic to evade them until we reach friendly forces, then we press the fight. If we can get together some Heavy Weapons Teams, Engineers and Guardsmen, we can set up an ambush for the Archenemy. A few of us can lure them forward into traps laid by Engineers and Heavy Weapons Teams can finish off the enemy forces that survive the trap."
he cast a look across the desolate city's wrecked skyline,
"First things first though. We need to find our comrades."
He moved over to the middle of the street and kicked away some rubble,
"The Archenemy will be looking for us up on the streets. There's a chance though, that the sewers are empty."
he said, nodding towards the manhole cover at his feet.
"It's your call sir."

I take a small swig of water from one of the canteens in my possession. My tank... Not to mention Wrackham's sister. Dammit, why can't I do anything right? I lost men on that thrice blasted forgeworld, I lost men on Accatran and now I've lost men on whatever this hellhole's called. This as supposed to be simple. Go in. Wreck shit. Get out. Simple. We got in. We wrecked shit. I got out. That's not right and that's not fair dammit!
Well, at least the fires are still going. That way I know we're still fighting.
That way I know I'm not just hiding. But... Wait, is that a person? Cultist? Chaos Marine? I quickly grab my las carbine and aim done the sights. Time stops. Catachan. A smile crosses my face and I put my weapon away before waving him up. About time. I had someone to talk to.

We dance like marionettes, swaying to the symphony of destruction...

Heavy rain and muddy greck washed over the surviving Tethians as the hail of mortar and artillery rounds continued on the ash wastes upon which the remnants of the Tethian 898th were strewn. Mounds of dead from both sides lay splattered and smeared like bugs stomped mercilessly. Tanks and trucks were everywhere burning, and the acrid stench of burning promethium, blood and rotting flesh was overpowering even through his gas mask. Dax thanked the Emperor he had survived this long. The rear guard platoons had not been massacred when the fortress' innards had been detonated to prepare the way for the Enemy's counterattack. A few hundred men, scattered across a landscape more scarred and pitted than a dead moon, fought on for the Emperor.

But there was no purpose in staying. Slogging through knee-high brown water with a thick current of red in it as well, Dax tried to make his way to the edge of the fortifications. Beyond, spiraling into the sky, Epsilon Prime burned as the fury of the war continued ever onwards. The trenches stretched on until the furthest-out factory and hab districts at the base of the monstrous city that was all too familiar to his own. Behind him, he heard the gruff growls of the inhuman language the Chaotic forces spoke mix in with shouts and yells in Gothic and Tethian. Above, the sky seemed as black as night. Who could know if it was day or not?

He had certainly not slept in a while, and his body ached from exertion. He kept his right hand firmly clutching his lasgun's trigger, his other curling a frag grenade. Ahead, the wasteland was beginning to narrow out. Still he heard the clamor of violence all around him; and ahead, a patrol of heretics. He ducked around a corner and looked ahead; the stretch of trench was about four meters deep, and the number of heretics no more than four, huddled together. He could handle them; they looked like traitor militia, dressed in ragged, bloody orange overalls with sheet metal plates fixed onto them. At their feet, the mangled corpses of two PDF troops, their blood being poured into bowls. Releasing the grenade pin, he held it for two seconds and hurled it into their midst. They didn't have time to react before the timer ran out and it exploded.

Two of them fell, their legs shredded apart. The other two leapt for cover and began firing wildly without a particular direction. Fixing his bayonet, Dax lurched out into the trenchway and fired on the one to the left, leaving a hole in his neck as warm blood drizzled out, the man gurgling in pain as he died. The other turned about to face him, but was too late. He fired and struck the heretic's arm, throwing him off balance, then speared him in the gut. As the enemy fell, Dax stabbed again and again, then held his gun's stock aloft and smashed the butt into the heathen's face until it was pulp. Heaving with adrenaline and hatred, Dax collected himself and continued.

The outermost districts were a mess. Still, disassociated remnants of everyone from planetary PDF, civilian militia and the myriad mix of the dozens of regiments mangled in the fighting kept struggling on as armored columns and mobs of soulless infantry kept pushing deeper and deeper. Dax skirted the edges of the road, picking off stray Chaos troops and giving information on oncoming enemy formations to other Imperials while staying on his lonesome, hoping to find the reserve Tethian 772nd regiment that had also been assigned to this FUBAR campaign. They'd be his only means of getting back home ever, to the life he had been stolen from, as unglamorous as a manufactory worker was. Along the way, he discovered a group of teenage city boys wielding sharpened pieces of metal with crude handles made of synthetic leather. The leader of them demanded he surrender his lasgun to "Commander Thung".

"Give it, offworlduh." The 17-year old said, aiming the sharpened pipe he held in his right hand at Dax.
"Piss off, boy. The enemy is coming. If you want a fight, you'll have one in 30 minutes when they get here."
The meaty ganger spat at Dax. "Nobuddy talks to the Commanduh like tat! We's want a gun to protect our home!"
"There are enough corpses to loot from." Dax said, then continued on his walk. A few moments later he felt a jerk on his backpack. He turned. The kid was still tugging. "Git it here, or I'll cut ye!" Dax punched the kid in his face, sending him sprawling.
"I won't hurt you because you're not my enemy. You want to protect your home? Then do it and leave me be."

The teenagers did not follow him any further. As Dax began entering Imperial-held streets, the main body of the hive looming overhead, he heard whispers on the vox about a titan that had decimated a unit a dozen kloms away. The battle continued raging around him, but following the traffic, he picked out a path using his city map to an area that should lead to the reserve station. A Higaran regiment had been there, who knows what had happened to them. He resolved to find anyone he could, regroup and push to the Tethians if possible.

Grafford slowly came back to consciousness. He felt his arm screaming in pain. As he opened his eyes, he looked around and saw that he was about 10 or 20 yards from where his platoon made their stand. He looked at his arm realizing he had been hit with an auto gun round. Next to him was the body one of his youngest troopers, Private First Class Hanson, 16 years old. It appeared the boy had tried to carry him to a fall back position. 'Emperor keep his soul.' he thought. Suddenly he heard voices and laughing,a cruel and sickening laughing. The enemy was moving around the dead and maimed bodies, using their knives to carve into the heads of his fallen brothers apparently. They also seemed to be looting Imperial gear and looking for survivors. There had to be at least three or four of them wandering around. He started to breath heavily and think to himself, 'Come on your worthless excuse for a guardsmen, are you going to let a little bullet wound stop you. A 16 year old boy died like a man trying to save your worthless self. Your men are dead and you're alive. Are you going to let their bodies be desecrated? You call your self a Grenadier of the 21st? Get up and avenge them, all of them!'.

Grafford's heart started beating faster, adrenaline began to flood his body, he clenched his teeth and pushed himself up to observe the enemy. Four of them, three front and one to the left, it looked as if he was using the dead of his platoon as his personal urinal, he would be the last to go. Grafford reached into Hanson's grenade pouch and pulled out a frag grenade. He removed the thumb clip, pulled the pin, and dropped the spoon. 'one..two..now!' He threw it as far as he could into the group of traitors. *BANG!* The explosion took out two of them. Picking up Hanson's Hotshot he fired three quick shots and blasted a thirds chest apart. He turned to aim at the one who was pissing on his men and pulled the trigger, it clicked. The traitor fumbling with his pants decided that going for his weapon was the better idea and started running as best he could holding his pants up. Grafford ran towards him and jumped with everything he had as the traitor picked up his lasgun. They both crashed to the ground rolling, with the lasgun discharging. Grafford managed to release the weapon's power pack, just as the traitor broke free hitting his injured arm with a horizontal butt-stroke and then he smashed his face with the bottom of the butt-stock. Grafford felt his nose break, and blood fill his mouth, his eye watered and he fell to the ground. He body was stunned, and all he could to was watch the traitor approach laughing as he pulled out a small hatchet saying " You have a strong spirit Imperial dog, the Dark gods will find it a treat among the cowardly ranks of the other corpse servants." He raised the hatchet and closed in, Grafford closed his eyes for a moment thinking ' Kill the fething bastard, are you going to lay down and die a coward?' He timed it right and kicked the traitor in the groin with everything he had, the scum doubled over and Grafford sat up and pulled him down by the collar with one hand while the other held the hatchet back. He rolled and ended up on top of the heretic pulling out his knife from his boot and stabbing it into the hand holding the hatchet to pin it in place. The monster howled in pain dropping the small ax. Grafford landed several blows on the traitor before picking up the ax and hacking away at his body in places that wouldn't bleed all that fast. The traitor screamed and struggled, Grafford just smiled as he reached into his shirt and removed the Aquila that he had received as a boy. He placed it on the traitors forehead and said " Where are your dark gods now heretic? Are they hear to save you?....No they aren't. They, like you, quiver in fear of the God-Emperors righteousness and the fury of his flock. I will see that when you enter the world of your kind you have "He who sits on the throne's" mark on your head, so that all will know the fate of all who turn from his light." He then began to hammer away, over and over, harder and harder. The two headed eagle was now smashed into the pitiful excuse of a man's forehead. Grafford removed it, cleaning it on his shirt and kissing it before putting it around his neck.

Grafford stood up and tied a the belt of a fallen guardsmen around his arm to stop the bleeding, he then broke his nose back into place. He had to hurry more traitors would no likely be coming to investigate the explosion. He reached into his pouch and took a dose of combat stimulants. His heart screamed into action. He got up and found a working Hotshot and then ran back to where he remembered falling. Where he and his platoon had made their stand he looked around until he found the body of his dead platoon sergeant. He then looked around and found his pistol and sword. He then made his way to where the Regimental staff had made their stand. He looked around and saw what he quested for. The Regimental standard of the 21st. He took the standard and put it in his assault pack. He would see his regiment re-founded or die trying. He started to collect all he would need, power packs and water, he then noticed the Master Vox-Caster still intact, he picked it up and turned in to the Imperial fallback net and keyed the mike.

More cannon fire.
More fire... Fire, I suppose. I can't wait until that guy from Catachan comes up; I could do with a link to civilization not in the form of my vox caster. And.. Crap, are those cultists?
"-OOHHHH and we'll cut you and gut you and sing the dark gods praise! To Khorne and to Tzeentch our glasses we'll raise! Hunt you down and round oh we'll kill you in so many wayyyy-s!
So we'll cut you and gut you for the rest of your days!" A small group of Cultist PDF chants, the smell of amsec heavy about them. I could probably knock one or two out before they noticed me, and they are drunk, so that's an idea... No. I don't like the look of the grenade launcher one bit.
"++Net call..((OOC: Protractis' message))" rings over the Vox Caster, the volume low enough that only I can hear it. Lucky, too. I believe that the Grenadiers of that regiment are also kriegers. Wonderful. Picking up the Vox Caster I quickly compose a reply message.

Roger saw the Krieg wave at him, and began to limp faster towards the tower while warily keeping an eye out for trouble. It was then he heard it, Cultists. It sounded like they were drunk and celebrating their victory. He gritted his teeth and gripped his sniper rifle tighter. He had to get to that damn tower, it'd provide a safe spot to give him eyes on these heretical bastards. Quickly, Roger got to the tower and began ascending it. Despite the pain shooting up his leg, Roger grinned. Meeting up with a fellow guardsman and possibly getting some shots off at the enemy? It'd be a decent start towards vengeance.

About 15 minutes from the tower

Grafford was exhausted, the loss of blood was starting to affect him as the stimulants wore off. He wasted no time moving to the rally point once he received the coordinates to the tower. Along the way he saw several cultist patrols mopping up Imperial resistance but there was little he could do as the broken Imperial attackers retreated many having long dropped their weapons or run out of ammunition. He stopped for a moment and rested against the hulk of a busted tank. It was an Imperial baneblade, Grafford wondered what had the firepower to destroy it almost utterly. He received his answer when giant lights started piercing through the smog of the battlefield, it was a traitor Imperitor war titan. The Goliath began marching forward all manner of foul statements spewing from its speakers. Grafford pushed the foul words from his mind and began to pray. 'Dear Emperor, Master of a million worlds, Sheppard of humanity. Though you have servants who outnumber the stars and warriors who deserve your intervention more then I, I ask you save me from this damnation. I stand a ever devoted warrior to your cause and ask only to die with honor like my men did, not as a rat skulking through the wastes. I beseech you Lord of the stars let me die with my hands around a traitors throat. In your service I remain, Amen.'

Grafford then took a sip of water from his canteen and observed the Chaos war machine, it appeared to be damaged as it was missing a weapon on its left arm and was struggling to move forward. He waited for the machine to pass before getting up and continuing towards the rally point. When he was one block away he reached his vox bead and tuned it to the frequency that he sent the message out earlier.

Grafford quickly made his way to the tower, he waited until the cultist patrol started to sing louder before moving through the rubble and into the tower. He slowly made his way to the top looking in each room to find ware the rally position had been set up when he collapsed. He felt dizzy, probably from the blood he had lost. Darkness slowly over took him the the stair well. He reached up to key his vox bead but was unable to form words.

Mork pushed his screaming chain bayonet against the concrete above him. The abused weapon could obviously not cut it's way through the broken remaining of the construction but the tremors loosened the rubble. Even if he could not see anything, Mork felt more loose Debris falling around his legs. "Damn it." He knew, his uniform pants were probably in rags by now and small stones got caught between his left Thermoplas shin guard and his skin. They buried themselves into his skin, only held back by some scar tissue that covered the Ogryn since the flame thrower incident 12 years ago.

A bigger piece of concrete broke loose, Mork stopped it with the spade in his other hand. He dug his legs out of the rubble below, then pulled his weapon and backpack with him. He reached around the large piece above, that probably used to be a wall. Above it there was more stuff, stuck somewhere else. He could let the one above him loose without causing an avalanche. If the little space he had. to move his arms and legs would fill without him getting a change to dig upwards at the same time, he would be stuck and never come out. - Mork concentrated, shut away the regrowing panic.

"Fuck!" the concrete plate slided sideways as he let it loose, crushing into his stomach before dropping down. Behind it followed smaller dirt and rubble but it buried Mork only hip deep, again he dug himself a bit higher, finding some hold on the concrete that just hit his stomach and sticking his head into the new opening where the stuff used to be that just fell down. "Finally!" He saw the first ray of light through the ruins of the building, from which he tried to escape. He took his spade and rammed it into the opening to create a breach. A large piece of what used to be the roof, probably, hit him on the head. Luckily, he wore a helmet but the weight was so heavy, he lost his foothold on the most uneven ground below.

Below, he blindly threw bayonet and spade into the backpack and twisted the strap around his wrist, then graped his big gun. With the empty hand and his feet, he pressed himself into 3 directions to get some leverage into play and pushed his massive shoulders upward, throwing off half a ton of stone. With a primal roar, he rose from the ruins like phoenix from the ashes. Finally having space again filled him with blissful euphoria.

It did not last long. He looked around and saw Imperial Soldiers lying on the ground, dead. How long had he been buried? He probably had just be unconscious for a few minutes, as he awoke, he he panicked, although he had managed to turn this in an upward-movement, he had lost all sense of time. Halfway - maybe - he had to take a rest and was able to calm down. After that it had been another hour or two.

He realized, that the corpses had not been killed by more air-strikes, it had been small arms - infantry weapons. "What were you doing here? You should tear down the enemy main base by now." He wondered but the lasgun burns told him the story: There must have been a retreat and the enemy was in pursue.

He leaned over a comrade. Instinctively he checked the pulse though he should have known there was none. He took the radio headset, his own unit had been broken during the attack.

Over the radio he could hear other soldiers. That had to mean, they were nearby, those headset didn't reach very far.

Grah, Dog??? Zeta??? Where was that supposed to be? Yeah, maybe the enemy had captured a radio and it was good that they talked in riddles but the riddles confused Mork, too. That made him angry. Soldiers had Sergeants to remember that shit. ... Damn it, he was a Sergeant now, he had to remember that himself.

"Here is Mork of the Catachans. Where is that Gathering point? I'm near Hab-exit South 54," he read from a nearby road sign. No answer. He could not know that the radio was set to receive frequencies from a powerful vox-caster and the weaker Radio transmitter did not have the range to answer.
He cursed again. It made him even more angry. His brain worked at its best but he could not remember where Dog-Zeta was. He climbed on the next best building, a burned-out mall. The voice said there was a tower at the gathering point, maybe he could spot it.

There was a number of towers in this habitation area but as he had reached the roof, Mork saw something else, too: A Chaos Titan! It was a few blocks west of him.
Mork checked the skies, at least those were free for now. He heard something new over radio, he could not clearly make out the words, it was to scrambled but he could make out the panic. He ran towards the Titan, staying out of sight. The voice became understandable: "Titan!! Titan!" it screamed in terror.
"Don't attack yet, I'm coming, we can flank it!" Mork shouted into the radio but it was to late. The sound of an mounted assault cannon. Mork looked over the edge of the roof and saw, that the Titan was firring northwards. The panicked voice over the radio went dead.
Well, if he did not have to, Mork would not attack that thing on his own. He could just hope, that the soldier tried to flee towards the gathering point. Yeah, there was a tower a bit north of the Titan, that must have been the gathering point.
He climbed back down and approached the gathering point. Whether it was his dumb luck or - more likely - the luck of the Chaos Patrol in the area - neither party noticed the other one.

The Morallis Fighting Third was a noble regiment. All in carapace armor, all excellent marksmen, all excellent swordsmen. They had been routed like ants to a flamethrower. Refusing to retreat at the command of the weak general, they had been culled. They had cut through the cultists, working as a red-hot knife through butter. Then they had seen the war machines. The first few had been destroyed without a problem. A few melta bombs had made quick work of their shoddy construction. Then the corrupted tanks showed up. They were not a big problem. The Fighting Third had advanced, albeit slowly. They followed the commands of their direct superiors and of their personal honor. Their pride and stubbornness had kept them in combat long enough for the traitor marines to show up.

Seven hours ago...

The colossal boot impacted with Dimitri's midriff, sending him flying. He had arched his back and relaxed his muscles to let the hit deal the least amount of damage as possible. His carapace armor absorbed most of the impact, the belly plates flaking a little bit. It was a weak hit, mostly capable of simply depositing him a few feet away. Playing dead, he looked at the traitor through his visor. He has a hellpistol at his side. He could grab it and unload fifty shots in three seconds before it risked overheating. He knew it would have less than a twenty-five percent chance of penetrating and hurting the monstrosity. It walked forward, leaning down to grab one of the Cadians who was laying with his leg blown off. The fist of the traitor marine crushed the left side of the Cadian's chest. The blood spurted like a fire hydrant, coating the men on the ground. It barely missed his armor.

He had a chainsword. Caked with meat and cloth. It could hardly rev. He had a better chance of breaking the plates of the traitor's corrupted and possessed armor with his armored hands. His hotshot lasrifle should punch right through the marine's armor. Only problem... it was on the ground on the other side of the marine's hulking stature. Waiting for the marine to take a few massive steps forward and grab another helpless guardsman, he rolled over into the pile of corpses. The marine didn't even notice. Crawling ever so slowly through the corpses, every second felt like a day. It seemed like a whole year of his life was spent as he inched towards his main weapon. The relief he felt when he grabbed its handle was like the opening of a floodgate. So much was his relief that his breath hissed through the vox grilles on his helmet. An audible hiss reached the receptors in the traitor's helmet and he turned around.

"So, the ant lives yet? You're more resilient than your kith and kin, I'll give you that. You would make an admirable servant of Khorne."

The marine stomped towards him. Rising like a reverse lightning bolt, the powerful lasrifle was brought to bear against the marine. At ten feet, it would transfer nearly the maximum amount of energy it could project. Aiming at the marine's head, he flicked the firing mode to full-auto and smashed the trigger. A blistering burst of deathly energy smashed into the marine's helmet. Cursed ceramite warped and cracked under the massive amount of energy being brought to bear. The traitor stumbled. His head was burnt black, every crack exhuming black smoke. One of the once-green eyepieces had burst. A vicious brown fluid leaked from where an eye most likely had sat. The other eyepiece was cracked. Aiming at the marine's torso, he advanced two feet. Optimum range for execution. The searing orange of the deadly weapon sprayed into the traitor's armor. It was more organic than ceramite here. The faux-flesh cracked and melted away, the original cables and filaments that had made up the midriff of the marine's armor starting to drip and burn. The traitor had stopped moving. The lasrifle was almost of out power. Dropping it, he drew his sidearm. The hellpistol's impressive firepower was brought to bear on the already damaged midriff. Unloading the amount of shots he knew it could in five seconds, its barrel glowed red. Leaving it hanging by its cable, he ran the remaining eight feet. The fist-blades were down and ready to work.

As each carapace-armored fist and blade impacted the almost completely exposed torso of the marine, they carved charred meat from its accursed hide. It was still stunned from the amount of damage the guns had dealt to it. As it fell backwards, he jumped on top of it. His fists descended time and time again into the stomach area of the traitor. Flesh that had not seen sunlight in millennia felt the wrath of a Morallan enraged. Reduced to the point that only the barest amount of muscle and skin remained around the spine and the armor behind it, the traitor finally was able to move again. Despite the amount of injury it had received, it moved. Backhanding him, it got up. Before his very eyes, it was regenerating. That which he had reduced to nothing was growing back before his eyes.

"You're a damn good fighter. Your skull will rest in a favored position on the Skull Throne." said the marine, surprisingly calm and civilized despite it being what it was.

"I'm not dying today... For Morallis... FOR THE EMPEROR!" he yelled, grabbing the spent lasrifle of the guardsman who he had landed on. Smacking the activation rune of the chainblade bayonet at its end, he jumped up and speared it into the marine's regenerating muscle and flesh around its spine. His muscles bulging, he forced it through the iron-hard muscle. It began to kick and spit as it encountered the reinforced spine. Relieving it of its pressure for a second, he let it rev and smacked it home again. The traitor screamed in pain - something it had not felt for centuries. The teeth of the bayonet quickly dulled on its spine and Dimitri tossed it aside. The marine had fallen down again and he stood on top of it again. Raising his right fist, he let out a vox-enhanced yell of pure rage. The bladed fist so symbolic of his regiment split the spinal column where it had been eaten at by the bayonet. The marine's legs kicked. Grabbing the spine, he ripped out the few vertebrae that remained connected to the hip bones. Throwing them aside, he grabbed the marine's own sidearm. A museum piece, it was hardly touched by corruption. It had three bolt rounds left in it. Standing up, he sunk one into each eye and one into the speaker grille.

"You... Fucker... I... Win." he spat out through the grilles on his helmet.

Four hours after that...

"Dimitri... Major..."

"Don't talk sir. I'll get you to a medic."

"I'm dead, Lieutenant Major... and... You're my next in line."

"Major Kowalzicz, don't talk!"

"Major... Major." coughed the dying Major. He let out a harsh laugh, blood and bile coming out of his mouth. The massive chainaxe that had cut the Major's torso almost in half lay on the ground next to the second, not counting the one Dimitri had killed himself, Chaos Space Marine they had killed as a ten-man unit. This time, however... First Lieutenant - technically Major - Dimitri Major was the only one left alive.

"Di... Dimitri. Take Legate. It served me well. It will..." he coughed loudly, blood-choked spittle splattering on Dimitri's breastplate.

"It... Serve you well." he coughed out, his dying breath rasping out.

"No... NO! You are not... dying! YOU ARE NOT DYING!" yelled Dimitri. Grabbing the straps on the armor, he began undoing it. It was helpless - he knew this, but he was still going to attempt to resuscitate the man. Grabbing the respirator on the Major's belt, he put it to the man's face. Pumping his chest, Dimitri sent the oxygen from the respirator shooting into the dying man's lungs and his veins. The heart of the once-great man beat wildly. His adrenaline shot through his veins. Grabbing a a strong opiate shot from the medical kit that lay open next to the Major, he slammed it into Major Kowalzicz's chest. The painkiller shot through the soldier's veins. It wasn't enough. Kowalzicz was dead. Blinking away the tears, Dimitri grabbed the sword his Major had given him as his dying wish.

Now...

He walked down the ruined street, hellpistol in one hand and power sword in the other. His hotshot lasrifle was strapped around his chest, sitting below the power pack on his back. He had seven more power cells for his rifle strapped to his upper legs and his torso, not counting the nearly dead one sitting in the weapon. His armor had suffered superficial damage. His once-full cloak was charred and reduced to a shadow of its previous glory. A closer encounter with a flamethrower-bearing cultist had left it mostly destroyed. His armor had soot marks and blood splattered all over it. His tactical display was shaking a little bit, as if it was receiving interference. The Morallis Fighting First had reported that close proximity to sources of chaotic and warp-spawned energy could do such a thing. That didn't stop it from tracking targets. It began to pick up on movement around the corner. Raising the hellpistol, he waited for them to come around the corner, the entire time walking forward. His blade down in a combat ready position, he activated the power field. As the individual came around the corner, he yelled through the vox-grilles, his voice amplified and turned robotic.

"YOU! Stand down! Name, rank, and regiment!" he yelled, looking at the guardsman. He noticed something. The man was a Tethian. The Morallans had fought alongside them only a few hours ago.

"Wait... You're a Tethian." he said, lowering his sidearm and turning his blade's energy field off.

"I am First Lieutenant... No, now I'm a Major... Major Dimitri Major." he said, having closed to the man enough that his helmet no longer needed to amplify his voice.

"Morallis Fighting Third. I was with some of your boys just a few hours ago. They... didn't make it."

Mork entered the tower and made his way up. He peeked a bit into the different floors and on the third he saw someone lying in one of the rooms. He Walked to the Soldier. He had a better Com-unit, then the one he had gotten from the guy in front of the tower Mork had been buried under. Instinctively, the Ogryn checked the Soldiers pulse - and actually, there was one. This one was still alive.

Mork checked the wounds, the head had been bleeding but that one had stopped. The arm however was still in serious condition. Carefully - as careful as his huge hands could be - he checked the bone - it was not broken. That was good, Mork could not do broken bones. So he just ripped the Uniform apart over the wound and washed it out with some water. Then he took an bountiful amount of bandaged and wrapped the arm well. Yeah, it would probably restrict the movement a bit but maybe the muscle was hit and the Soldier better not moved that anyway then. The procedure was not as unstereotypically dexterous as before and the patient awoke.
"Oh, sorry," Mork said, realizing the pain his procedure caused, "I'd offer you some painkillers but with that head wound of yours I'm not sure that goes okay, you should probably ask a real Doc about that." He grinned. He would never wish a fellow Soldier bad but making an Officer feel a bit uncomfortable was a small, guilty fun he could not help.

He tried the radio again: "Hello, Here is Mork of the Catachans. I'm at the Gathering point with another guy. Looks Lieutenant. Is here someone else."

2 month earlier:

"Get the hell down!" Roger Carn and the other 5 Soldiers of the Catachan 23rd who had come to support their fellows from the 19th did as the Ogryn ordered.
"I have made the demolition pack a little bigger, those Chaos guys like to build some extra layer of Armor into their doors," the Ogryn explained. He almost saw the terror in the men's eyes. An Ogryn handling explosives was a disturbing thought for most humans.

The explosion went off BIG. the sandbags flew over their head like rockets - and a second explosion. Red hot plasma expended rapidly from numerous broken plasma gun cells and with it came a barrage of exploding projectile and bolter cartridges fling in all directions. One hit a Lieutenant in the leg. He screamed "Mork, you stupid idiot, that was too much." He and another 4 soldiers rolled on the floor in pain.
Major Joesph Graham was at the opening already, checking the situation: "Well, who would have guessed, that's their ammunition's depot. Anyway, I'm counting ... at least 10 of them down. Hard to count. I call that a nice little explosion." He laughed at the smell of his dead enemies.

Unknown street
Commissar Gustav

The old Higaran could not help but smile ever so wearily at the Guardsmen as he spoke, detailing what seemed like a plan already carefully thought ahead. He admired people who could do that, but in this current situation, what the man said was improbable. Starting a guerrilla war in the middle of hell itself was not going to work. Prowling Chaos Marine squads would be enough to overwhelm a platoon worth of Guardsmen. Not to mention the Chaos armor, titans, and literal tide of heretics.
Taking the canteen from the proffered hand of the Guardsmen, Gustav took a small gulp to rinse his mouth out of dust, spitting it out on his hands so he could wet his forehead, and he took another small gulp to drink. When he handed back the canteen to the Guardsmen, he continued listening to him, but shook his head soon when the man went towards the sewer manhole.

"A thoughtful plan." The Commissar said with an affirmative nod, his face back to a somewhat scowl. "Yes, loot the bodies. They will still help us in their death. And I agree, we must find survivors." He continued, his accent noticeable. "But waging a guerrilla war? No, that is foolish and improbable. Using the sewers to escape? Every other Guardsmen would be thinking like you. Same with the heretics." He said, spatting at the last word. "I don't know about you, Trooper Shelton, but I rather not be stuck in the confines of a sewer with a heretic marine on me with a flamer. Not to mention it will be flooded with blood and mud from up north." He explained, grimacing for a moment with the grisly images of such. "The flash rains, when they come soon, will be causing flash floods all underground. If you are not taken by a heretic, the waters will claim you. No, we have a better chance on the streets of finding others and surviving. That, Trooper Shelton, is what we shall do."

Gustav stood, hunched over from instinct while in a combat zone, when the first artillery shell came to a fiery explosion down the street. At first, he thought it was a stray shell for a moment, until another landed, closer this time. Then another, and another, and before he knew it the distinct whistle of shells were filling the air.

"Over here!" He barked, waving his hand at Shelton. "Into this warehouse! We'll seek cover there!" Turning to face the building behind him, the Commissar quickly assessed the weak flimsy metal covering the door. It was obvious an attempt at a barricade, and uttering a prayer to the God-Emperor that it was no trap, he kicked the metal with his large boot with such force, the haphazard sheet and wood metal wall fell down, and the Commissar nearly fell down with it if he had not put his foot out to land, as if he was taking a giant stomping step.

Once the door was down, he immediately noticed a giant gaping hole in the side of the warehouse. Just yonder, across a small industrial yard, was a large tower overlooking the area. If anyone was in there, they would need to get to cover. One shell to that tower, and it would go crumbling down.

Glancing at Shelton, he motioned at him quickly to get down by a small concrete support slab as the artillery began to rain down on the surrounding area.

Twelve blocks from location of scattered Imperial Remnants
Chaos Titan Mors Rex, Warhound Class (considered Feral)

With a primordial, beast-like roar, Dark Mechanicus Princeps Horvak trembled in his place within the cockpit of the corrupted titan, once a proud Imperial Warhound, now a Feral Scout. Horvak, like the rest of the ancient crew, were always hard-linked into their vessel. Decades of corruption had sealed their leathery and wilted bodies to their seats, and bile oozed out of their hides, keeping them locked in place. The cockpit of the corrupted vessel was a haze of incense which stimulated dark incantations, which inhumanly voices chanted. The tight confines smelled fiery and oily, and the foul scent of corruption filled the air.

I smell them. The Princeps thought over the hardlink, his mind now one with the titans. The once Warhound trembled itself, shuttering in ecstasy at the thought of taking another soul. Brown and vile grease and oils secreted themselves from the joints of the titan on the outside. It's armor, once a decoration of Imperial colors and emblems, was now rusted a bloody maroon. It's edges were serrated and sharp, and if one could manage to look at the titan long enough, they would notice its symmetry did not match, yet it still did. The beast, in its whole, was an utterly terrifying sight to behold. And it now smelled blood.

With a feral growl of inhumanly voices in a choir together shouting dark things emitting from its vox horns, the beast took off in a blood-fueled gallop towards the Imperials quite a distance away.

The musty stink of ash continued to waft as everything from the spire to the outer habs of Epsilon Prime burned. Dax watched Lightning fighters engage Hell Talons in the air, dogfighting viciously, but the sick, daemonic aircraft won out as wreckage and the limbs of crewmen plummeted from the sky. Ahead, as Dax tried to weed his way to the warehouse district where he had picked out as an pathway into the inner hive city, he had to flip off his vox. After combing its garbed, panicking messages for tactical info, he had heard enough- or as much as he could take before he became ill. His brown uniform smeared with dust, dried black earth and blood, Dax tried to move off the rubble of an old shopping complex into a major concourse where a few hours before, a battle had raged and left few living.

Surveying the cratered landscape atop the roof, he noted the hundreds of corpses; and a few cultists milling about them. Grimacing and fixing a scope to the railing atop his lasrifle, he keyed it for single-shot high-power and began picking off cultists. The first fell, having never seen it coming. The second was startled but had no time to react. The third tried to duck for cover but fell too short, the narrow ditch he dived in not covering his whole neck. A fourth and fifth managed to reach a small, upturned autocar. Yelling, Dax charged down the dispersed plascrete and steel hill, dodging poorly-aimed autorifle shots as he moved from cover to cover, managing to flank the blcok the cultists hid behind, spraying them with fully-automatic fire and shredding them into fried meaty bits.

Coughing, Dax resumed walking up the concourse, noting with displeasure a series of massive explosions off to the distance. Tank battles continued to rage within the outer sectors. He watched a series of landing pods crash into the hive spire, delivering cargoes of heathen warriors into the unprotected belly of the hive. Anti-aircraft fire and missiles continued to streak madly throughout the sky. Looking up made Dax ill. What Emperor-begotten horror had caused this?

He had been walking for a good half-hour when he heard a fellow soldier bellow for his name, rank and regiment. The man evidently recognized his rather filthy uniform, however, because he called him a Tethian.
Holding his hands up and turning around to face the soldier, he said, "Hello... Dimitri, sir. Daxtrimadis, Sergeant, 898th Tethian."
After hearing the man identify himself as a Morallian and speak of the fate of his fellow soldiers, Dax simply glowered and said,
"To be expected. Nearly all of my regiment is dead. We attacked Chaotic fortifications outside the city during the counterattack, and they... detonated them. None within lived. I was fortunate enough to be in the rearguard. We fell back, and most of even us were killed by the Chaotic counterassault."

Taking a moment to breathe, the reality of all his dead friends impressing itself on him, he resumed speaking.
"But I must find my way to the Tethian 772nd. They are the only men of my world who remain on this Emperor-forsaken warphole. If I ever want to return to Tethia, I'd have to be with them. Thankfully-" he paused, and withdrew a map of the city outskirts he had been scribbling on- "I know a path, or at least what should be a path. A few Chaos Titans ripped through the area earlier, but from what I could learn from the vox, there is a warehouse district that has so far not been overrun. From there, I traced out a concourse that leads into the inner city and where the 772nd should lie in reserve. Care to follow?"
The Morallian nodded and they were off.

"Yes sir,"
Matthew replied with a serious nod, keeping the obedient, loyal Guardsman facade' in place. In reality, he was but a competent soldier and a good actor. Plenty of other Guardsmen wanted nothing but to go home (just like him) the only difference between him and them was that they panicked, cowered and behaved like civilains. He felt fear quite often and wanted nothing more than to go home but he knew from experience that the only way home was victory. Victory or death, there is no other option. The words of his Veteran Guardsman father rung in his ears. Victory couldn't be attained by cowering in fear and crying like a child. Loyal, competent Guardsmen were less likely to be executed or thrown away in a suicide attack. Besides, wouldn't a valiant death on the battlefield be better than dying a blubbering, miserable embarassment? The only path home was victory. But to be victorious, he first had to survive. He followed the Commissar closely, fear tying a knot in his stomach as the shells grew nearer. He hurled his thick body against the barricade with the Commissar, though his entrance was less tactful. He fell with the barricade but rolled forward reflexively and found himself back on his feet. He dove behind cover with the Commissar, keeping his M36 tucked tight against his chest. Outside, the artillery fire drew nearer and Matthew squeezed his eyes shut, throwing an arm over his face to protect himself from dust and debris. He pictured Taylor's smiling face and tried to tune out the incessant BOOM, BOOM, BOOM of the artillery barrage.

The Colonel's powered fist smashed into the marine's faceplate.

"Stay down, cur." he spat out, the ashes on the end of his cigar falling to the ground.

"You! What's the status on the Chimera?" he yelled across the small roundabout at the engineer working on the transport.

"It's... able to move, but its side and rear arm-" he reported, before being cut off.

"It will get us out of here? Good! Men of the Morallis Fighting Third, load up!" he said with all the authority of a man with years of command under his belt to the nine remaining honor guard of his personal retinue.

"And engineer, take Lieutenant Molkov's rifle. Such a weapon should not be on the ground."

~Far away where Major Major and Sergeant Dax stood...~

Dimitri nodded at the Tethian's words.

"Then it is decided. We move towards the warehouse district and then re-asses our situation. Cover me." he said, drawing his blade and sidearm once more. His pride may have been scarred; he may have been ashamed to be the only survivor of his regiment - as far as he knew - but he would continue their tradition of keeping to the front.

They snaked through the ruined city. It was dark, not from night or from weather. Rather, the darkness was one of smoke. There was so much fire and such an amount of death that the air was heavy with smoke. As they stayed in the back-roads and the hidden alleys - less room for the basest of the Archenemy's minions to swarm them - they avoided what sounded like the largest sources of conflict. They encountered only two sorry souls in these roads, though they heard so many more in the main streets only a few dozen, maybe a hundred feet away. These two souls were very different - one was a guardsman. He was weeping. He did not respond to their questions. Collapsed against the wall of the rockrete building, the guardsman only maintained a sitting position with his legs spread out because he had not the strength to do anything else. The second soul they encountered was an unclothed penal guard; the tattoos and markings on him picked him out to be a member of one of the various penal legions sent here to test the water. The marks around his neck clearly showed he had somehow removed the explosive collar he would normally wear. As he turned around and the insanity in his eyes was seen, Major Dimitri Major rose his sidearm and leveled it.

The madman ran at them and was dead before he was within twenty feet, a hellishly orange bolt of energy turning his head into charred meat and bone fragments on the walls around him. The smoke from the hellpistol cleared quickly and the two guardsmen continued their pilgrimage.

As they came to a fork, Dimitri rose his sidearm in a near-universal sign amongst the guard to stop. Down the fork, about twenty-five or thirty feet, was a main road. The air was quite literally ablaze with lasfire. It was unclear who was fighting who. Turning back around the corner to the Sergeant, he shook his head.

"Too hot. Which way do we need to go?"

"I think we need to go... North, if we're at the correct intersection."

"North? That way." claimed Major Major, the compass in his tactical visor activated. "We don't have a direct path, however. Through the building?" he asked, gesturing to the northernmost storefront. The walls here were almost solid rockrete, but the door was simply steel. Easy enough work for a power sword.

"Watch my back, we're going straight through." he commanded and stated, before activating Legate's power field. Slicing through the metal around the door handle like it was butter, he kicked the door open. Once upon a time, it was a tabacc and lho shop. Now, it was ransacked. The windows in the front - those that remained - were caked with soot and grime. It was still unclear who was fighting who; in fact, it was hard to see the lasbolts through some of the windows. Going to the wall where the shop bordered a second shop, he knocked on it. Thin rockrete. He could cut it. He just had to find the studs. Stabbing his blade into the wall where it would receive no resistance from studs or supports, he forced it through the wall in a roughly oval shape of around his size. Giving it a hefty kick, it came falling down and he went rolling into the next shop - just in time, too, for the traitors who were engaged in the firefight were too numerous to all shoot from their barricade. A few spun around, unloading their autoguns and lasguns into the shop. Its front was destroyed - in fact, it looked like a god's heel... the heel of a titan... had landed here recently. The footprint of flattened building and cracked street was all too familiar.

Having landed behind a plasteel display, he felt momentarily safe. Looking for Dax, he panicked for a moment when he couldn't see him - before realizing that Dax had dashed behind the main counter and was firing a shot every few seconds back at the cultists. Glancing around the corner of the display, he pulled back just as quickly, for a flurry of lasbolts smacked home on the display and the floor next to it.

This had been a toy shop at one point. The irony that the very things it sold - wind-up miniatures of titans - had come to life and destroyed it.

Taking a potshot with his sidearm, he was rewarded with a yelp of pain. Dax stood up once more, unloading a volley of shots at the traitors.

"Dimitri, get back here. There's a trapdoor." Dax managed to whisper over the gunfire. Steeling himself, Dimitri jumped up and unloaded a fully-automatic burst of hellpistol fire at the traitors outside. The fusillade of death claimed a few lives. As Dax stood up to give him covering fire, he managed to get behind the counter. A lasbolt grazed Dax's right bicep, leaving a blackened singe where the cloth was burnt and the skin marked with pain. Yelping with pain, Dax ducked behind the counter and smacked the release for the trapdoor. Jumping down, he landed safely ten feet below. Dimitri followed.

"Dax, why are we down here? We're trapped."

"No, we're not. Help me move these boxes. There should be a service tunnel between this and the next side street. The owner was kind enough to leave a map of the service tunnels bolted under some plastic behind the counter. We should be able to avoid that so long as we hurry." Dax stated, referring to the firefight upstairs. Nodding in agreement, Dimitri moved to do one last thing to hinder the cultists. Activating his blade once more, he cut the ladder from its supports. They moved the boxes, eventually clearing the service tunnel's entry. It was dank and dusty, but it was safer than anywhere he had been in the past week. As they entered it, they would emerge at the other end, directly on their way to the warehouse district and whatever horrors this new chapter of their lives would contain...
