The Expansion - PMT RP (IC/OPEN)

Postby Machtergreifung » Sat Jan 26, 2013 6:42 am

By the end of the 21st Century, the nations of Earth were heading into a terminal state of decline. America, battered by a series of economic declines and exhausted by a string of bush-wars across the world is now a nation divided between the extremely wealthy and the very poor. China, long the economic powerhouse, is hamstrung by mounting social and political disputes that keep threatening to flare into all out civil war. Much of the rest of the world is little better; struggling to deal with growing populations and economic collapses.

The advent of the Alderson Drive changed that. Faced with the possibility that this new technology could utterly destroy the delicate balance of power on earth, the United Nations Space Oversight Commite was formed, consisting of Russia, China, America and the EU, aimed at preventing any nationaly organized space colony from developing. In practice, it became a conventient way for these nations to get rid prisoners and dissidents.

With the return of the first few scout ships equiped with the drive, humanity has now a new frontier to expand into, and already the best and brightest along side the dejected and downtroden of Earth are signing up to be a part of the new colonies in the stars.

The year is 2142, and the stars are opening up for humanity. It is the start of the Expansion.

Star Map - Will be expanded if needed.

Touchstone, Inverar, Inverar System

The premier settlement on any colony world was always an interesting place. It normally set the pattern for settlements across the rest of the colony planet, and Touchstone was no different. The settlement had been around long enough that even the hige colony ship that had housed the entire population at the start was now surrounded by newer dwellings; the stone and wooden buildings constrasting sharply with the ultra-modern and shiney hull of the ship.

From the scout craft Magellan stilling in orbit, Touchstone looked a ugly blot on the otherwise pristine surface of Inverar. The other satalite settlements were still too small to make much of an impact, and with the vast feilds of rolling wheat surrounding Touchstone, it was no wonder the town stood out to such a distance.

Many remarked that Inverar was like Earth, only easier. It had reasonably the same gravity, though the sun it orbited was an orange dwarf, it had a simmilar climate. But it was different. The planet's wildlife had been simply overwhelmed by the highly mutated life brought on the colony ship, and it showed. Oak trees, one of the rarest types left on Earth, were springing up everywhere, and animals that would have been worth a small fortune for their furs were considered as pests or poor eating on Inverar.

However, not everything was a utopia for life. Already problems were becoming apparent for the people of Inverar. A splinter group of colonists had broken off with the main body, and having decided that the colony was headed in the wrong direction, were determined to change that. In pratice, on occasion, a far flung homestead was found burned out, and with little to no natural threats on Inverar, there was little doubt over who to blame. There were hopes by many, sick of the same sort of problems on Earth, that this issue would get no worse.

Revolt in China Crushed!

News has emerged today that the Front for the People's Liberation (FPL)has at last been defeated. This follows the month long seige of Hangzhou by forces of the government to quell the uprising. Despite government casualties being in the thousands, and untold numbers of civilian deaths, the government has reported taking in excess of several thousand prisoners. Inside sources report that the Front decided to agree to the goverments terms of surrender after food ran low and the Front became splintered along ideological grounds. Under the terms of surrender, FPL members and family members who choose to go with them will be deported to an off world colony, a move that has been met with widespread approval by both the United Nations and various humanitarian groups around the world.
