Igor inhaled the salty sea air. It was refreshing to him in a way only a sailor knew. It rejuvenated him, just like it had his ancestors, long ago on the Baltic Sea. His ancestors, Varangians, had struck fear into the lands they traveled. They were fierce and brave warriors and sailors. And he, Igor, was a Varangian. Or so he thought. In reality, mused Igor, he was only half Varangian. But he still had their warrior blood. And that was what had prompted his to join the Kievan Navy as a Longboatman.

The Longboatman was the hardest profession in the Kievan Navy, and second only to that of the Petards in the whole military. These men, between ages 18 and 30, worked the Longships of the Kievan Navy. These ships, while extremely similar to the galleys of the navy, were in practice much different. Most were lower in the water, and they had little to no over head protection. Unless you were in a Dre'kkar. Which the weren't. This little force was composed of a snei and three snekkjas, totaling 203 men. The longships had no offensive weapons, relying on boarding for combat. Of course, the longships weren't designed for ship to ship. Instead, they were designed to outrun the defending galleys and ships and raid the shore line. And that was why working a longship was the second hardest job of the Kievan Navy. A Longshipman had to fight and row, a tiring activity.

Igor felt a tap on his shoulder, right as he finished his last set of pulls on the oar. It was his turn to be spelled. Since their was a decent wind, only 50 of the 80 rowers on the snei were rowing. The rest were cleaning weapons or sleeping. Others talked of their assignment to guard the the Skyros Island as a vanguard force for the convoy coming from Kiev. Igor didn't care. Igor slept.

The local Khan lived in a palace near the center of town. "Three, please." Kolinski dropped several coins on a merchant's stand, buying some local food. "Mm." The Kipchuks could cook. He looked up at the sun. Only a few more hours...

Outside of Ikan

Tupolev stared through a spyglass. "There's one." He said. "Let it come into the brush." Kosov said. Tupolev readied his ax, sickened at what he was about to do. A merchant cart was leaving the city. Tupolev was part of the blockade, designed to cut the town off from the rest of the Khanates. "Now." Kosov said. The two men hurled themselves at the poor merchant, who was quickly slain. Tupolev closed his eyes and prayed for a few minutes. The two men hid the body, then went to the cart. Then, Kosov asked, "What's for dinner?" Tupolev examined the merchant's cart and pulled out a box of fresh dates. "We're eating Kipchuki style tonight." He said.

Nearing Kiev

The carpenters and boatmakers of Pereyaslavl were skilled indeed. A mass exodus was occurring as many headed to Kiev in search of profit. Long wagons, laden with wood accompanied them. Rumor had it that a war was coming between the Venetians and Kievens. Many of the Pereyaslavli had relatives in Kiev also. Whatever their reasons, they all had one goal in mind. Help Kiev destroy Venice.

The Leon and Castille had finally massed their troops into one army. Aragon, however only sent half of their forces to the coalition. These forces were marching down from Burgos and had already defeated one army of the Almohades. However, the two kingdoms had sent all of their forces. If they were to be destroyed piecemeal in battle, then all was lost for the Spanish cause. The two armies had finally met each other near the village of Duenas.
Battle of Duenas
Abu Mohammed Ben Abi Hafs was leading the scouting group when the Almohad army encountered the Spanish. Immediately he rode back to the Alhomade camp and ordered for them to form up. The basic battle plan was for the cavalry to preceed the main infantry body and to irrate them. Then the infantry would engage their infantry. The cavalry would tire the armoured cavalry and surround them. The Catholic cavalry would soon disentergrate and the Islamic cavalry would circle back and attack the unorgananized infantry. This would spark a mass rout and the end of Spanish resistance.
