The French began to dig themselves in and they looked at Jerusalem, where no sound could be heard.
"Its very quiet over there General."
"Yes to quiet, order 4 shots at that wall to the left, then fire 3 volleys of fire arrows."
"Yes General." The trebuchets fired and then the archers let lose their arrows. The arrows hit and lit that part of wood working on the wall on fire. Then the french fired volley after volley of arrows and stones. They pounded the city walls and the french began to move forward mercenary horse archers to harass the arabs on the walls. The french would leave the main wall in a pile of rubble and then they poisoned the main water supply of the city. The city would begin to fall and decay as the French would gladly let the inhabitants die and limit the Crusader loses........
Meanwhile in Dijon.
So station 5000 more troops on the borders with Genoa, then move 20 ships near the Genoese Coast. I should have kept the city for France. But we may have it back in time. Then send 1000 cavalry to reinforce the french forces in Milan and send the 20,000 crusaders that have arrived back from the holy land to the Borders with England. And send for the architects, I want a castle built in the Alps for my wedding present to Victoria.......

The Duke Aliardo looked to the north-west, staring at the waving fields of grains that spat in his face from across the Lithuanian border. His holdings were prosperous yes, but the Duke was a greedy man; very un-Russian, really. He had Polish blood, truth be told, not that he had ever told anyone, and was a nominal Christian at best. His commander stood uneasily at the noble's side, fidgeting from time to time. A few minutes passed, and then the broad-shouldered military man spoke.

"My Lord, perhaps you will reconsider? The Grand Prince will not take kindly to you provoking King Jogaila with the forces of Great Russia already committed to an offensive against the heathens in the south." Alairdo looked at his man for a moment, a breeze pushing his hair back from his face, and waved a hand in dismissal. "Yuri may be otherwise engaged, but we here in Polo are not. My lands are small, and could be larger, and there are godless pagans here as well as far away in the lands of the Kipchak." He nodded his head, his mind decided.

The cry echoed throughout the drydock, and together with four hundred other laborers Ivan strained mightily at the rope. Slowly, behind the men, the massive bulk of the War Cog began to roll on its greased logs down the slipway. The design was high-sided and powerfully ribbed, an improvement on a design brought east by Germanic traders; it's two sails would bear it quickly across the seas, and its two castle, one fore and one aft, loomed over the men like ants. Ivan grunted with effort, but as he struggled to bring the cog to its aquatic home he dreamt of what it would be like to be a fighting man atop the mighty vessel, raining death down on the foes of God and Grand Prince Dolgorky. Around him over a dozen other drydocks were working on similar sailing ships, the new Black Seas Fleet of Great Russia.

Ceorl's muscles strained as they heaved a shovelful of dirt onto the rampart. An arrow flitted down to embed itself in the barricade, and the Lietenaunt leapt back with an oath. His men laughed at the young soldiers; they were within a very long bowshot of Volgograd, but few enough men on the walls could shoot the distance that arrows were thankfully an exception, not a regular occurrence.

The Khan's army had retired into the city rather than face the massed Rus infantry and cavalry in open battle; funny, how the Kipchaks had attacked first, but the Rus had been better prepared for the conflict. Now the Orthodox had begun the work of seiging the fortified city, a task which might take many months. Other Great Russian forces still advanced south, sweeping aside lesser Kipchaki forces; Ceorl had heard some cavalry units had even made it as far as some place called Sadoveye, nearly to the latitude of the Caspian Sea.

Volgograd was encircled, and as the attackers raised an earthen rampart mighty siege engines flung death into the city.

Alfonso rode with his cavalry unit leading his invasion his invasion force of 10,000 soldiers across the desert towards jerusalem, the Templars and Hospitallier armies behind him. He had sent diplomats to the principality of Antioch, hopefully their shared Norman background would sweeten negotiations convince them to aid Sicily, he hoped atleast.

As he rode over a dune, He saw the remains of a dust cloud in the distance that had been kicked up by the French forces that clearly where miles ahead.
"The French are expecting us to arrive soon after they do, they won't wait for us, hurry the men, tell them the holy city waits for nobody" he told his lieutenant.
