The map below shows the cultures inhabiting the world, followed by a brief profile on each, which any applicants can use to base their nations on.
Atlantic Culture - This is the closest Europe and North Africa has to an indigenous population. The first wave of human migration out of Africa met with the Neanderthals, and out of this interaction was ultimately born the Atlantic Culture tens of millennia later. While undeniably Homo sapiens, there is also significant Neanderthal influence within their culture, evidenced by their fairly sedentary nature, and in their facial features and pale skin, which is not even recognizably brown. Maybe their matriarchal culture is also a legacy of these ancestors. Had genetic profiling been in use, it would be concluded that the Atlantics were about 20% Neanderthal, sometimes less, compared to only 1% or so in those peoples living further east. Much of their civilisation is based on small rural settlements, although sprawling cities have emerged in the west, in Iberia and Morocco. They inhabit Morocco, especially the Atlas Mountains, through Iberia up into France, and the British Isles, as well as eastwards into the Alps, with relic populations in many areas of the Italian and Balkan Peninsulas. While a fairly major civilisation [think of the more prosperous post-Roman states], they are being pushed westwards by invading West Eurasians in France, and proto-Nubians in the Balkans, Italy and Morocco.
West Eurasian Culture - Having arrived in Europe more recently, the West Eurasians in general have been very succesful in their expansion into the German plains, although now with the increase in technology of their western neighbours this expansion is slowing. They originate north of the Black Sea, but have since extended themselves westwards into most of Eastern Europe, down the east and west coasts of the Black Sea, and as far as eastern France. They have also expanded east, and are meeting with their Proto-Iranid relatives in the Caucasian highlands and the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea. Their culture is patriarchal, and highly hierarchical, while their technology is a little more advanced than that of the Atlantics, on a par with the southernmost Iranids [think West Romans]. To further establish their distinction from the natives of the continent they are expanding into, their skin is a lighter shade of brown, a little lighter than the Iranids, rather than the paleness of the Atlantics.
Proto-Nubians - Originated in the middle reaches of the Nile, but were pushed north by the expansion of the Ethiopids, absorbing existing Nile-dwellers, before expanding around the eastern Mediterranean. Their better technology than those who inhabited the area before them, combined with the huge population base in the Nile Delta, enabled this. Their society is fairly loose, centred on the city-state, and although most of their technology is not amazingly advanced, their seafaring abilities are unmatched [think Phoenicians with Graeco-Roman ships]. Fortunately for many of the peoples of the Italian and Balkan peninsulas, Anatolia, the Levant and North Africa, they are primarily a coastal people, but have nevertheless pushed out much of the Italian and Greek populaces. Appearance-wise, they are dark, but not so dark as the Ethiopids [like this Afar gentleman].
Green Saharan Civilisations - Not particularly advanced, the Green Saharans are semi-nomadic, use camels extensively, and have huge ranches of zebu and goats across the lush Saharan plains. In some regions, their extensive farming is doing damage to this environment. In the Sahara, there is no real urban culture, and population density is currently low. However, environmental degradation, and imperialism from the east (Ethiopids and proto-Nubians) may force this to change in due course. Although mostly dark-skinned [I'm imagining them as looking like the Songhai, for no real reason], in the north they have absorbed significant numbers of pale-skinned refugees from the Atlantic culture which have been pushed south.
West African Cereal Farmers - Having developed a civilisation recently, and at a relatively rapid pace, the West African are fairly heterogenous. They have both patriarchal and matriarchal societies, city-states and small empires, urbanised peoples and more rural groups, and even nomadic and semi-nomadic sub-cultures. However, in general, the entire region runs on the huge cereal farms which cover the region, and technology is fairly high, although not yet ready to compete with the Mediterranean groups [think Roman Republic]. Their skin is very dark, akin to that of the ancient human stock.
Mbuti Predecessors - A fairly homogenous culture of short-statured, very dark-skinned forest-dwellers covers most of Central Africa, and even up into the surrounding mountains in many areas. They interact with the West African in the northwest, often to their own detriment, trade with Saharans in the north, and keep a wary eye on the Ethiopids in the northeast. The Early Khoisan to the south and east are largely on an equal playing field with them, and so they trade and interact a good deal. There is agriculture established in one form or another throughout the Mbuti's lands, primarily based on orchards of fruit trees and fairly large herds of forest hogs. Patriarchy is strong among the Mbuti at the moment, but maybe interaction with West Africans will encourage a transformation, while also bringing them more technology such as wheels and horses and cities.
Early Khoisan - The Khoisan are a plains-dwelling people. They farm huge numbers of cattle across southern Africa, and have begun to build cities along the eastern coast, where they trade with each other and sometimes with Ethiopids from the north. Their society is relatively egalitarian in the more rural majority of their civilisation, but in the cities of the east a more hierarchical society is forming, although there do not seem to be any particular overtones of patriarchy or matriarchy. As a rule, they are fairly short, although not so much as the Mbuti, and fairly dark-skinned, although again not so much as the Mbuti, while also being of slighter build than the Ethiopids whom they neighbour in southern Somalia.
Greater Ethiopid Culture - A huge cluster of city-states and minor empires, usually operating as patriarchal kingdoms, or occasionally a form of republic, stretching from central Somalia through Ethiopia and Eritrea, and into much of the southern Arabian coast. Aside from in the far north, they control the Red Sea. They are now rapidly spreading inland into the Arabian plains, pushing out the scattering of vaguely-Iranid peoples there currently, sometimes bringing along enslaved Khoisan peoples as cattle farmers. The Ethiopids are generally fairly dark-skinned, a little more than the Nubians [Somalis, Oromo, that kind of pigmentation]. Technologically, they are behind the Nubians in seafaring, but ahead of them in most other areas, the highly competitive nature of their warring-state-based society being conducive to technological progress, and so they are on a par with the Iranids [West Roman]. They trade with and/or enslave the Khoisan in the south, trade with Green Saharans in the west, and war and trade with Iranids in the east and Nubians in the north.
Proto-Iranid City-States - A general Iranid culture permeates all of the highlands west of Dravidia, central and northern Anatolia up into the Caucasian mountains, and right up the east coast of the Caspian Sea, as well as eastwards around the northern edge of the Himalayas. Their society is very sedentary, and extremely urban. Each of the small Iranid cities, be it in the mountains or the lowlands, is surrounded by huge pastures of cereals, and often large herds of sheep, cattle and goats as well. A Council of hereditary Chiefs often run each city, or each league of cities. The Iranids are light-skinned compared to the Ethiopids, Dravidians and Nubians, but not compared to the West Eurasians. Their skin is a rich brown in hue, for the most part.
Early Dravidians - As the second wave of human migration exited Africa, it swept through the Iranid regions into what is now Dravidia, all composed of dark brown-skinned North Africans of a similar appearance to the Early Dravidians, it pushed many of the previous inhabitants, the Negritos, eastwards, leaving North India as a homeland for the Dravidians, while their relatives to the west became the Iranids. Since settling the region, the Early Dravidians have developed a partiarchal, imperial culture, and are often united under a small number of huge empires, which are increasingly imposing their will upon the Negritos. Technologically, they are just behind the Proto-Iranids. They have taken the Indus and Ganges River Valleys from the Negritos, and are now continuing to expand, only now they war against the great Leagues and city-states of the Negritos, rather than scattered tribes.
Negritos - The Negritos are the descendants of the first wave of Homo sapiens out of Africa. They travelled around the coast very rapidly, reaching Australia, China, Japan and Korea, before beginning to move inland at a slower pace. Ironically, those populations following the traditional coastal lifestyle, in insular Southeast Asia and Japan, have transformed into Proto-Austronesians and Jomon Culture respectively, leaving China as the mainstay of Negrito civilisation, along with inland and northern Southeast Asia, and southern India. Due to their war with the Dravidians for India, they have adopted much of their technology, including the wheel, and many of their domesticates. These insights spread eastwards, and now most of the Negritos have formed organised societies, although still lagging behind the Dravidians significantly [think Roman Republic]. In the western regions, particularly southern India, they are mostly living in city-states, but in the east Tribal Leagues are the dominant social structure, based on alliances of the Old Tribes, throughout large regions, which then form powerful and large nations under multiple hereditary rule, either patriarchal, matriarchal or neither. Their greatest population centres are on the eastern Chinese coast, where the rice farms are providing food for millions. Deep black skin, as dark as the darkest of Mbuti.
Early Aborigines - Descended from the Negritos and Proto-Austronesians who moved inland to the Australian plains, and then culturally subsumed the coastal inhabitants. They do not use organised agriculture at the moment, or have any real organised society, but are nevertheless trading with the Proto-Austronesians in the far north, and prospering as they hunt the last of the island continent's diverse megafauna. Their skin is perhaps a touch lighter than that of their Negrito ancestors.
Proto-Austronesians - Developed as a lighter-skinned offshoot of the Negritos, the Austronesians have since overtaken all of Insular Southeast Asia, leaving relic Negrito populations in the Papuan highlands, and are now advancing on the Southeast Asian peninsula. This original divergence may be partly as a result of their absorbtion of the Denisovans in their original coloniation of Southeast Asia. They are mostly patriarchal, and live in thalassocracies under a king. They are known by the Negritos as the 'Fisherman Kingdoms'. Their skin is brown, a little lighter than that of the Dravidians, and their technology is fairly advanced, perhaps just ahead of the [Roman Republic-level] Negritos, as evidenced by their growing urban centres on Sumatra and Borneo, and their long shipping lanes.
Jomon Culture - Having diverged from the original Negritos with the help of a little immigration from the paler northerners from North Asia, the Jomon quickly created a fairly sophisticated and organised civilisation, mostly matriarchal and rural, which has since then almost entirely failed to develop any further, to the point where they have been overtaken by the Negritos in China, and are being pushed out of their Korean regions. Only a rapid change, and adoption of new societal and technological insights from the west, will save their civilisation from being taken over by the more dynamic Negritos. Their skin is a light brown in colour, coincidentally similar to that of the Austronesians.
Megafauna Hunting North Asians - Finally, the North Asian peoples, descended from a combination of first and second wave emmigrants from Africa, are relatively light-skinned, aside from those in the south with stronger Negrito influence. A nomadic people, they live in tents, and are fiercely loyal to their tribes. The North Asians are expert horsemen, and use them to hunt the megafauna of the northern steppes. However, the mammoths are now almost extinct, and other species are also becoming rarer. The North Asians often war amongst themselves, forming tribal empires and alliances constantly. Their culture spilt over into neighbouring North America, in a few brief spurts, where it has begun to rapidly diverge.
West Eurasian Culture - Having arrived in Europe more recently, the West Eurasians in general have been very succesful in their expansion into the German plains, although now with the increase in technology of their western neighbours this expansion is slowing. Name of State: Clan Domain of Ureierum
Type of State: Confederal Absolute Monarchy, under a hereditary Queen
Population: 3.3 million
Location: See Here
Culture: Atlantic
Brief History: For generation upon generation, there had been a level of co-operation between the peoples of the Atlantic Culture in Iberia and in Morocco. They often shared clan membership, and peoples moved between the two regions with regularity. In 200 AS, with increasingly advanced technology gaining a presence as it leaked south from the Atlantics defending themselves from West Eurasian incursions, there were movements towards unifying the clans of the entire region surrounding the Straits of Gibraltar into a single Clan, but then Nubian raiders from the east hit the area to a huge extent, and drastically reduced contact between the Moroccan and Iberian peoples. For some time, this state of affairs remained, until a series of dramatic uprisings by the Moroccan Atlantics devastated three Nubian cities, allowing contact to resume. Within a year, a Single Unified Clan had been established, the Clan of Ureierum, with an established domain. The Queen of the Clan was a powerful Matriarch whose family had been dominant in the Atlas Mountains for centuries, who was also more vocal than most about improving the technological situation of the Clan, a very progressive view for the time. However, lesser Matriarchs still govern the towns, villages and cities of Ureierum largely autonomously. The Clan was formed to protect the region from further Nubian incursions, and has had partial success in the 300 years since, although there have been Nubian raids, and several city-states have been established near the Ureierum Domain.
Notes on Society: As all Atlantic society is, very matriarchal and sedentary. Most of the population lives in small settlements occupied by family groups, with men sometimes moving between groups, or more rarely women moving to larger settlements for greater opportunities. Despite this sedentary culture, there is a huge amount of trade between these groups, usually performed on horseback or using ox-drawn carts. Ponies and donkeys are bred in the Atlas Mountains to a very high standard. Within the few great cities of Ureierum, mostly coastal at the moment, trade is the order of the day, and people come in from their villages and towns to barter for all manner of goods from across the Clan Domain.
Current Situation: Despite this seeming prosperity, Ureierum is certainly under threat from the east, as the Nubians become ever more numerous, and conducting more regular raids on the Moroccan and Iberian coasts. Several cities have emerged near Ureierum, and an offensive war is being seriously considered by the Matriarchs, although the lack of seafaring technology of the Atlantics would hinder this hugely. If the worst comes to the worst, they may have to eventually flee inland, abandoning the lowlands in favour of the Atlas Mountains and inland Iberia. There is, however, ongoing great technological development, largely spurred by imports from the north, which provides some hope for the nation's survival.
Plans for RP: To survive, to bring in the remainder of the Moroccan Atlantics, and some of the Iberians, to develop technology sufficient to ward off the Nubians, and maybe one day the West Eurasians as well.

Gameplay
Do not post in the IC until you are accepted, by me or any licensed Co-OPs I choose. You control your nation, but have to do it realistically. Keep in mind the priorities of the people within your nation, which may well be very different to your own. The game will progress only a few years at a time at first, until enough people have joined, then it will speed up so that we can have faster progression and development. The year we're at now will be called 500 AS (After Something), just so we remember that its roughly equivalent to 500 AD.
Other than that, have fun!
