You'd be better off damaging the shell with bullets, even if you had a powerful enough laser to melt tungsten, you'd now have boiling hot metal flying at hypersonic speeds heading at your men, which is arguably worse.

Not a problem. If it's melting it's gonna break into a bunch of pieces that lack the inertia to be awesome. This kin of makes me want to do like in the Legacy Trilogy, when they destroyed half a planet's surface with sand.

No, it would be a blob of hypersonic melted metal, and it takes ALOT to melt tungsten, like maybe with a huge ass gaurdian (how'd china get mah Gaurdians?)
