Short History of your Nation:
Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries was Spain at her finest: she controlled portions of Italy, vast swathes of the Americas, and had recently expanded into Morocco. Spain, at the height of her power, even assisted the local Kandy Kingdom in pushing Portugal off the island of Ceylon in 1658, pocketing the Portuguese portions of the island as a result. However, Spain by the nineteenth century was a Spain torn asunder: the Latin American colonies had revolted, Italy had been given to first the Austrians, and then ended up in Napoleonic hands. Spain, broke and militarily defeated on almost every front, was left with few colonies to her name. The Spanish army was helpless to stop an invading Napoleon, and only a combined effort from the entirety of the Spanish and Portuguese populaces pushed the French out of Iberia. However, the nation refused to be entirely broken by the loss of the American colonies: Spain still had firm control over Morocco and Ceylon, and recent expeditions to Australia, a continent relatively untouched at the time by European hands, had proven that establishing colonies on the southwest side of the island would be a profitable idea. Spain remained a nation with a grand history and a reasonable potential, but a string of incompetent leaders failed to bring about a second Spanish golden age. Not even the colonization of southeastern Australia could resurrect the Spanish grandeur, and the colony remained as modest as the rest of the nation.
Spain, beaten about by time and slowly bleeding the last few colonial possessions to the European and even Chinese powers hovering like vultures over the not-yet-dead body of Iberia, was shocked by the modernization brought about by the First Spanish Republic in 1873. However, the Republican experiment was short lived, and Spain again returned to a backwards monarchy under Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII. The Spanish Monarchy, again broke and unable to sustain itself, was forced to sell Cuba to its American allies in 1895. By 1898, the Spanish people had enough of being chained to the inept monarchy and, following yet another defeat and yet another colonial possession taken away, Camilo de Polavieja staged a coup d'etat and established the Second Spanish Republic. The newborn Republic quickly instituted a series of democratic and economic reforms, bringing two centuries of development to the Spanish people in a matter of years.
The effects were quickly recognizable. The Spanish economy nearly doubled in size, and Spain quickly made up for lost time, switching from the plodding industrialization under the Bourbon Restoration to a lightning pace of factories and roads and stock markets. Of course, Spain was still in many ways bound by centuries of inept leaders, and a combination of droughts, archaic laws, and global economic slowing led to the crash of 1907. The Spanish economy, momentarily derailed, resumed its course by 1909, and was soon back to pre-crash levels of efficiency. The Second Spanish Republic, under the firm guiding hand of a conservative coalition backed by the still-powerful Catholic Church, began to test the global water in the 'teens. Trade agreements were established with the Levantine Republic, seen as a moderate, safe Christian ally in an increasingly theocratic and unstable Middle East. Relations with Italy had been chilled for a great time now, since the overthrow of the Pope and the enforced de-Catholicization of the country, and Spain still harbored bitter resentment towards the Mediterranean nation. The theocracy in America, and the associated Republic in Quebec, were quickly recognized as Catholic allies, and Spanish leaders cherish the relationship between the Second Republic and the powerful, growing Americas.
Spain is a country with great potential, and one stuck at a crossroads. A series of smart negotiations, able leaders, and continuing economic growth could very well lead to a strong Republican Spain with influence in South Asia, Oceania, the Middle East, North Africa and, of course, the Mediterranean. However, the path is indeed treacherous, and it is just as (if not more likely) that a leader as inept as the monarchs, or a second economic slowing could permanently stop the growth of Spain yet again, leaving it mired in archaic laws and backwards culture for another era of history.
Short Description of your nation:
Spain could best be described as a nation resurgent. The Spanish Armed Forces, including the Infantería de Marina, the oldest marine corp in the world, fight with a renewed strength. While certainly not the dominant force that it was in previous centuries, it is quite possible that a downsizing of the Iberian nation was for the best: a smaller, more efficient Spain has emerged from the turn of the century, prepared to face the challenges of a new era in politics, instead of clinging to the successes of the past. The Spanish economy has been similarly reforged, and the ruling center-right coalition has maintained strict free market policies, much to the benefit of the general benefit of the economy, despite the occasional hiccup, a la the crash of 1907. However, with the decreasing power of the Catholic church, and economic growth beginning to slow, a turn to left is predicted to eventually occur within the next decade.
Spain has maintained a (much smaller) presence abroad, although not in quite the same areas as the Spain of the eighteenth century. Spanish Ceilán, won from the Portuguese in 1658, is a major player in the Spanish economy. Rubber and tea plantations have greatly increased the value of the island colony, and Spain has become increasingly protective of the island. Spanish Australia, settled after the loss of the colonies in Latin America, is much less a "cash crop" economy. Mining, farming, and fishing dominant the local economy, and the Australian colonies after not perceived as ends as much as they are means towards domination of the Australian continent, similar to domination of the American continent. There is a strong opposition, however, to this idea of colonizing another continent, as Spaniards recently finished with the last vestiges of Spanish imperialism in Latin America are hesitant to invest in another costly expedition. Furthermore, concerns have been raised as to the ability of Spain to maintain a colony so far away, with trade routes crossing through the seas uncomfortably close to the Chinese powers.
Culture:
General population's view on gay rights/gay people: We're Catholics, so we can't overtly support them. Increasing liberalization means that we're not quite sure if they're going straight to Hell, but we're not quite at the point of accepting them yet.
General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Convert the nonbelievers, or they'll go to hell! We just need to help people see the right way of thinking: the Catholic way!
General population's view on atheism: Views certainly easing as Republicans come into power.
General population's view on abortion: Satan, did you say? This is a hurdle that will not be jumped for some time.
View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): White Man's Burden.
Status of religion in politics: Influence of Catholic church slowly being reduced, although it's still powerful.
Any big prejudices in your nation: We're still mad about the Latins revolting, although we're coming to term with that, and in general just bitter about being reduced from global superpower to second rate country. The Muslims (and to a lesser extent, the Jews) are still somewhat unwelcome.
View on immigration into country: Not exactly the most common occurrence, but Europeans attempting to escape other, either more liberal or more conservative, regimes are certainly welcome.
View on emigration out of country: Still in many ways a colonial society, so a strong force of emigration. Lots to Latin America, North America.

Short History of your Nation:History diverges after the invasion of the Mughals, in which the Bengali people are forcibly united under a single banner by the occupiers. This unification ended centuries of dynastic rule and feuds as well as brought about a Bengali Renaissance with the new found political freedom of the Mughal Emperors. Arts flourished as Bengal became one of the more wealthy provinces of the Mughal Empire, but relations took a turn for the worst.
As the Mughals saw Bengal as their prize, they wanted to keep it at all osts and in essence “ride the money boat” that was flowing from the province. Issues of taxation, religion, and local political corruption began to take ahold as the province broke out into full-scale rebellion against the Mughals, who at the time (1650) were slipping from power due to the rise of the Marathas. The Storming of the Authority at Dhaka is seen as the initial fuse, and the battle of Kolkata is seen as the final blow to Mughal domination over Bengal, with the war lasting a little over 3 years.
With its new found regional power, Bengal enforced a treaty with the Mughals that promised the Bengal State (its name at the time) to have a full and unrestricted protection over all Bengali people on the Indian subcontinent. It would invoke this treaty countless times against the Mughals as reason for military invasion and conquest of places they termed as “Bengali”, despite some areas lacking a Bengal majority. Though this, they gained large tracts of land in India.
At the same time, Bengal Adventurists pushed North and East against the Tibetans and Burmese, establishing Bengali-ruled states in those regions through the period of 1750-1800, after which it began to absorb these states under its control. As the nation expanded, the Bengal State started to adopt a more pacifist stance and began to express liberal views stemming from contact and trade with Europeans. However, in 1875, a reformation took place in which the nation swung to the right of the political compass, though expressed republican views in that a unified Congress was established as well as a Statement on the Rights and Laws of Man, guaranteeing equality under Bengal law for all citizens. Through this process, United Bengal was adopted as a new name to express the unified nature of all peoples under its rule.
Currently, the nation is a semi-Westernized state with heavy secular beliefs in regards to government, but is experiencing the imperial hunger and desire for land. Militarism is rising as once peaceful people begin to call for enlargement of the Military to defend Bengal from growing threats, both externally and internally. The Raj, an elected autocrat by the Congress, is indeed becoming swept up in the national fervor too.
Short Description of your nation: A secular, industrializing nation beginning to taste imperial power.
RP example (For nations exceeding 100 million people): N/AGeneral population's view on gay rights/gay people: Open Homosexuality is rare (Sexuality in general discussion is rare as well, just a culture thing in South Asia). Bengali Law criminalizes it, but since no one talks about it, it is not a problem and people are rarely tried for it.
General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Tolerance is professed by Hindu and Muslim alike, though some extremists are up and coming in Bengal. Governments’ official take is total neutrality in all religious affairs.
General population's view on atheism: Again, neutral in all religious affairs. Some Senators are agnostic or even atheist, but their belief should not affect public policy just as Islamic and Hindu beliefs do not.
General population's view on abortion: Illegal and not prevalent as the cultural norm does not view it very highly. Women are ostracized for abortions and serves as a deterrent.
View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Race means little. All citizens are treated equally under the Law and are recognized as persons without any regard to race, religion, creed, or affiliation.
Status of religion in politics: Government will stay out at all costs. Laws have been veto’d in the Congress for even appearing to be religiously motivated.
Any big prejudices in your nation (widespread discrimination against a particular group, linguistic conflict, etc): Language differs in the Frontiers (Tibet, Shan States) and some animosity exists between Chinese and Siamese peoples, but for the most part, all under the UB Banner settle their disputes in the Congress or High Courts.
View on immigration into country: Moderate; Chinese are discriminated in this sense and seen as a threat to Bengali jobs. It affects Siamese as well to an extent, stemming from Burmese cultural norms.
View on emigration out of country (Also, how many people emigrate per year?): Students are sent to higher learning facilities in Europe on the condition that they return to Bengal, but full scale emigration is not rampant. Around 1,000 a year. The lengthy process of attaining emigration papers is a deterrent.

Short History of your Nation:
After the Buddha's death in 542 B.C, the first Buddhist practitioners came to council to codify the Buddha's teachings, and to immunize them from any human corruption. Sponsored by the king of Magadha, the monks came to meet in the city of Rajgir. After hours of debating, the various Arahants (enlightened ones) came to the conclusion that the Buddha's laws were to be followed strictly by all Buddhist practitioners.
As Buddhism organized into a formal sect, the religion quickly gained fame amongst the people of Magadha and acknowledgement from the king, who in 511 B.C. declared Buddhism to be Magadha's official religion. As the religion spread throughout India along with the Kingdom of Magadha, it gained a foothold in local culture, transforming from an obscure sect into universal common knowledge. Asoka's conversion to Buddhism after his conquest of India only served to heighten the spread of the religion, eventually overpowing old Hindu beliefs and becoming firmly rooted in India's culture.
This deep-rooted faith helped play an influential role in halting the expansion of the Sunga Empire, who were deeply opposed to India's new Buddhism-based culture. The Sunga were repelled and eventually collapsed in 43 B.C, leaving northern India a mix of religious 'temple-states', with local religious authorities taking over domestic rule. The Yuezhi invasion in 12 B.C. united these states (along with last tracts of Tibet and Western China) into the Kushan Empire, which kept dominance over the country until its collapse in the 10th century A.D, after Western China was conquered by the Tang Dynasty.
The only suitable nation to fill this huge power vaccum was the growing Tibetan Empire, which recently adopted the Buddhist creed. After overthrowing his brother and claiming the throne of the Empire himself, Thrikhyiding sought to unite the many small Buddhist temple-states under the new Tibetan flag, proclaiming the Tibetan Empire to be a political unification of the Buddhist religion. With growing Islamic influence in the West, and the threat of a Mongol invasion to the North, the temple-states quickly capitulated. Tibet now controlled most of northern India and spread almost all the way to the Hindu Kush.
However, the breadbasket of the Empire, around the Pakistan, was under threat. After almost a decade of crippling floods between 1512 and 1520, the Tibetan Empire was left hamstrung. Fearing a rebellion, the current Emperor, Dorje, planned for the gradual overhaul and replacement of the current Buddhist culture. Historically the Tibetan Imperial family and the army were removed from the Buddhist religion, creating a parallel between the 'docile' peasantry and local monk councils and the uninhibited military commanders and royals who created friction between the monks with their lack of belief. Dorje sought a future where Church and State could be interwoven, and upon word of these successful attempts amongst European powers, he looked West to revolutionize his fractured nation.
After ordering, bribing and threatening the Tibetan Arahants (enlightened monks) into redrafting the Buddhist Dharma, without calling a Council to discuss the changes, Dorje sent messengers to all of the major temples to proselytise the local monks into adopting this new 'Militant Buddhism' which encouraged and required the citizenry to act for the good of the nation rather than their own moral good, and advocated warfare against other Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. When an overwhelming majority of the temples rejected the amendment to the Dharma outright, the Emperor instead sought to win over the populace directly, portraying the monks as an aristocracy, a greedy middle-man between the people and their Emperor. In response, the monks held their own council, and many temple-states agreed to relax taxes in an attempt to placate the peasantry. This enraged Dorje, who lost a large portion of his payment from the monks, and in response he used his authority as Emperor to replace most of the monk councils with appointed governers. When the monks didn't capitulate, Dorje mounted a military campaign to supress the temple-states, forcefully evicting religious leaders of major Buddhist sects and taking them captive. Many temple-complexes were then sacked, and the wealth redistributed amongst the citizenry to win support for the new government.
After years in captivity in the Labrang Prison Complex, Dorje (in a fit of paranoia) eventually deemed the elder monks and sect leaders too dangerous to live, and ordered their secret execution. The monks, numbering more than 10,000, were massacred by Tibetan soldiers after their daily prayer, and the corpses buried in mass graves in the side of the mountain where the prison was situated. Meanwhile, new monestaries were formed and supported by the government, raising a generation of monks who were unquestionably loyal to the new Dharma and the Emperor. By the time of Dorje's death, the old Buddhist faith was corrupted beyond recognition; monks answered only to the Imperial family, instead of local advisors and spiritual leaders they became governers and soldiers, and Buddhism was used to justify the expansionist Tibetan political ideology to the point where it became engrained in Tibetan culture.
Currently, the Tibetan Empire is an extremely nationalist state, with the entire culture focused on the strength and unity of the Tibetan nation. To this end, Tibet has managed to organize and modernize itself without much support from the West, and has attempted over recent years to come to equal terms with European powers over issues such as trade rights. Tibet currently boasts one of the largest and most modern militaries in the world, with exotic tactics (including the use of rocketry and mass infantry charges) unseen elsewhere in the world. Some of the largest cities in the world are based in Tibet, where industry is heavily focused and people are crowded into small planned homes and workshops, and the military police and secret police keep order through their combat expertise and weight of numbers.
Short Description of your nation: An extremely nationalist state, which is quickly modernizing but is still struggling to liberalize whilst still keeping various cultural, social and religious groups unified under the Tibetan banner.
RP example (For nations exceeding 100 million people): You know me!

Swith: It's because you're so awesome. God himself refreshes the screen before he types just to see if Nightkill has written anything while he was off somewhere else.

Short History of your Nation: Since the Late 1400's, Switzerland was an independent entity. Albeit, it was usually a weak one. Surrounded on four sides for most of history by super powers, France, Italy, Germany, and Austria, its land was ravaged as the factions waged their wars on neutral soil. Swiss culture has been heavily influenced by this, mostly by the French, and is also the largest Ethnicity group. As population in Switzerland continues to rise, the need for space, and more importantly, farmland, will soon be a problem on the horizon, if not dealt with soon. This tiny, land-locked nation, must now battle the super-powers around it, whether it wants to or not. The Swiss have a choice: Fight, or die.
Short Description of your nation: Switzerland is a small, mountainous nation, whose population will soon be too much for it to handle. At its continued rate, within a couple of years, food shortages and famine will tear the Kingdom apart.
RP example (For nations exceeding 100 million people):
According to the rules of rounding, since i'm above five, i must round up. Well, i learned something from math, at least.
Anyone want to be allies with Switzerland? We'll let you hide in our mountains!
