That's just me, though.

Lets make Pakistan an anarchic NPC(RL Somalia) that everyone ends up taking a bite out of?

Okay.

I just fear that someone may make their bordering NPC a pathetic little nation that can't defend itself for shit. That's why I'm taking Poland. If it's going to be a tiny little NPC in between two powerfull empires, I'de like it to have a little dignity. It is my ancestrial homeland, after all.

Short History of your Nation: The Zheng clan of merchants have always been notoriously successful in all of their ventures, whether it be pirating, honest trade, capturing Taiwan from the Dutch, and forging a new empire out of the dead ashes of the Ming dynasty, or perhaps all of them at once. They are the major player in establishing the nation, and many are revered as outright gods in the modern Empire of the Liang.

The story begins, with a few other historical modifications such as knowledge of the treasure fleet never being burned, during the collapse of the Ming dynasty and the capture of Taiwan by Koxinga, who was a staunch Ming loyalist even as the Ming withered, collapsed, and even tried to become Christian just to get foreign support. From his base in Taiwan, he captured the Philipines and began to build his resources and forge ties with the mainland loyalists in the South, who were under continuous attack from the two forces of the newly established Obedience dynasty to the North (Shun dynasty) and the rival military forces situated in Sichuan and Yunan.

Building up a sizable navel force with his resources in Taiwan and mustering up a massive army, he aided the continually ailing Ming Empire on the mainland while denying trade to the other nations (most Europeans were content to trade with his empire anyways), and slowly got a foothold on the mainland, along the way taking some Dutch colonies and getting Malacca to become a vassal. The real turnaround was during his navel battle for the Nanjing area, where from looting the libraries, he recovered full knowledge of the early Ming monsters of the Treasure Fleet and volumes of other, very vital knowledge.

However, over time, he had grown disillusioned with the Ming monarchy he was propping up, and so too did the rest of his family. Why was it that he was supporting a weak, not too popular and ailing group to remain on power? Perhaps it was time that a merchant clan assumed command of China, and so he began to plot. He began to plot for a method to overthrow the remains of the Ming and install his own family as the royal family of all of China...

He died of natural causes one day before he could enact his plan to overthrow the Ming himself and reunify China, before he could instal his own, very popular family into power. However, his sentiments were not forgotten, for his son found a different method to solve the crisis. His son had caught the eye of a lovely Ming princess, namely the daughter of the current emperor, and so too did he love her. He figured out a way to use this to his advantage, for it'd unify the families and, with sufficient threats and jostling, allow him to pressure the Zhu clan into abdicating the throne.

By now, China was growing war-weary with the decade or so of rather continuous war, and when he forced the Ming emperor to abdicate the throne, he made a stunning order from the beginning of his new Liang dynasty that would forever shock the people within China. He declared that he would not seek to unify China, and invited the various emperors to be and the warlords to a small frontier town to discuss the carving up of the Chinese empire for good. Suspicion was rampant, and he knew himself that his purpose was not to divide China but to provide an era of peace of which he was certain that his region would develop the fastest, thus allowing him to later conquer the rest of China.

The others were very unconvinced, but with sufficient rhetoric, he had managed to being peace to all under heaven. The Liang would have southern China, Taiwan and the Philipines, as the map was redrawn, and others received their pieces as China began to prosper once more. He utilized trade with the Europeans, often using his own ships to get to Europe to trade, to kickstart his new nation's economy, as western knowledge flowed east and old books were mined. However, no one quite could grow sufficiently larger then the other, and so none risked war with each other.

All instead spent their time waging wars and diplomacy of expansionism and projecting their sphere of influence in order to defeat their rivals, with the Shun gaining Xinjiang and occasionally putting the Mongols to their place, the empire situated in Nanjing building up navel might, the empire situated in Yunan and Sichuan attempting to invade into Burma, and the Liang bringing Malacca, some former Dutch colonies, and Vietnam under their direct fold, while courting a rising and deliberately engineered second Khmer empire in South East Asia in order to combat the Sichuan influence.

This all changed in the later 1700s, when a old Song dynasty text was mined that promised new and revolutionary (Well, old and buried by the Mongols) methods such as paper money, coal usage, hydro-power and automation which would allow them to outcompete their rivals, and the ideas were presented to the government at once. However, they were slow to adapt as internal politics continually threatened to collapse upon itself during the rough transition to a democratic-meritocracy, and it took under the 1820s for it to take full effect across the now semi-democratic largely meritocratic nation (which was influenced by legalist, confucian and western texts).

This gap, unfortunately, drove many of the proponents to present themselves to the court and halls of other Chinese governments in China, and by the 1850s, they were by no means the sole power. Rather, if they didn't industrialize and reform, they'd simply loose, and while the situation grew volitile with wars being fought all over the place across the century, leading to the modern world in China as it is today. Knowledge transfers from the Europeans and from other Chinese nations and their highly inventive populace further spurred technological growth in China- in total they'd be considered on par with Europe.

Multiple wars were fought across the century, spurring advance and keeping each nation in check with each other as the world changed before their eyes, as new technologies revolutionized aspects of life. East Asia would become very outward looking, and as East Asia marches into the 20th century, how might things change?

Short Description of your nation: The Liang empire is a diverse empire with many differing cultures, religions and ethnicities, but fiercely united at the same time. One can see Islamic mosques beside Buddhist temples in harmony, as mixed families become the norm and divergence from the mainland Chinese cultures is taking place. Despite this, the script is still standard most of the time, although that can not be said about grammar at times. Traditional clothing is the norm, not the exception, in this nation as Hanfu and other forms of clothing dominate over the western forms of clothing. Red and gold silk clothes with elaborate headdresses are the norm for formal occasions, with western style suits being viewed as strange. This also has the effect of nurturing a domestic textiles industry.

Communication is facilitated by writing, which has made literacy a top-notch issue with the government. In fact, public education is strongly invested in and streamlined, "For how can one demonstrate their merits if they start on terrible ground?" Much of everything else is often a cutthroat capitalistic world, dominated by family business clans which, despite public education, continue to go on absorbing each generation (although they tend to expand into fields where the next generation wishes to go).

Public education has also led to a golden age of thought, as new schools of thought such as Neo-Mohism (named after the Mohism of the Warring States period) come to be. All have meritocracy as one of their ideals, but how to run it and everything else is what they debate on. Scientific advancement in the nation is rapid, and overall, knowledge is held high (along with high results on the tests, of course). Civil Examinations is the only way to get into the executive government (although which branch depends on which test).

The nation is rich and industrialized, and pride runs deep within the citizens of the nation. Despite this, it is a high-stress world and smoking is in major fashion in the nation for both looks and dampening stress. Once in a while, people snap and things get ugly. Massive extended families tend to live together in one huge building complex (In the traditional Chinese home style with a courtyard in the middle, and often many floors), but with the exploding population occurring, many families are being encouraged to further extend their family or live with another in even more massive, sky scraper-like homes that defy the traditional Chinese architectural thought that wide is better then tall.

The family unit is the basis of which law and society is organized, and when dealing with criminals, they mean dealing with their family as a unit. Money is pooled in a family, and they often try to create the most massive family unit possible. This has the side effect of more local family politics, which is ripe for a lot of Asian drama...

RP example (For nations exceeding 100 million people):
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=205396
viewtopic.php?f=31&t=207809

General population's view on gay rights/gay people: The general view towards gays and the like is of contempt and dislike, but other then passive hatred, there is nothing much going on about it, and it is observed that secretly at times, it is done by even the most prominant peoples, although they are most certainly not gay...

General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Very, very tolerant, as religious tensions are practically unknown in the East, and while one government may secretly promote one over the other, in general tolerance is the norm, not the exception.

General population's view on atheism: The general view on atheism within the Liang is one of somewhat hostile neutrality, but most simply don't care about it.

General population's view on abortion: Abortion is currently seen as exceptionally wrong, and even if it wasn't banned, most people would simply despise the woman who got an abortion, if they knew she did. Knowing the issue with the situation, the central government often has orphanages for abandoned children, and said children are often trained to serve the state...

View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Exceptionally tolerant of other ethnicities co-existing, the Liang still hold, however, a general policy of mixing ethnicities for all to become Han Chinese, and governmental policies encourage this.

Status of religion in politics: Religion has a tendency to creep into politics but is not the main thing in any way.

Any big prejudices in your nation (widespread discrimination against a particular group, linguistic conflict, etc): Lazy people are generally seen with distain, and beggers are truly hated (or at least in times of economic prosperity.) In other words, those who would not work to feed themselves are seen as not deserving aid. Seniors and those injured are excluded (and if they still work, they're almost revered as an angel).

View on immigration into country: It is tolerated, and even encouraged, but mostly from other Chinese/East/South East Asian nations only.

View on emigration out of country (Also, how many people emigrate per year?): Emigration is seen as partial treason, and is heavily discouraged. However, if they really wanted to, there is nothing preventing them from relocating to other nations. A good few hundred thousand in total exchange hands between the different Chinese empires (Jin included) and the Liang.

Inports: Food (From the empire above especially), assorted trade goods, coal from the Jin
Exports: Assorted trade goods, East Asian stock market, aircraft

There's extra shit you have to put into your app.

Don't worry. It's nothing crazzy, just some stuff to help balance the RP a bit.

Short History of your Nation: History follows as normal, but diverges as the Tsardom of Russia makes stellar victories against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and seizes the Duchy of Courland. As the centuries progressed, nothing would go right for the nation. Russia, Prussia, and Sweden began to play various roles in the politics of the Commonwealth until the vast majority of the nation was carved between Prussia and Russia. Lithuania, sensing the danger of the situation and its’ independence, withdrew from the Commonwealth with Poland.

Fearing that it too would be absorbed into Russia or Prussia, Lithuania turned to Swedish aid, who held a portion of the Baltic to the north (Livonia), to keep it nominally independent. Sweden, at the time an ambitious, imperialistic Kingdom, readily agreed to keep Lithuanian independence to ensure that Swedish Livonia would not be threatened by a rising Germany or Russia. Sweden thus installed a position that the Kings of Lithuania must be from a Swedish Noble Family, leading to various Swedish Princes ruling over the nation, on the condition that they convert to Catholicism and speak the natural tongue.

While it is one of the rump states of Europe, and must rely on German, Russian, and Swedish imports to remain afloat, Lithuania retains independence and a relatively stable economy while the military is not a truly continental force, it is enough to make some impact on the aggressors who may attempt to challenge the Kingdom.
Short Description of your nation: A small rump state in Europe that is clinging to independence, and is heavily influenced by Sweden, just as Russia dictates Poland, Germany with Czech, and the Empire with Slovakia.
RP example (For nations exceeding 100 million people): Nope

Just Slovakia, I demand the Czech part as well!

Also, Gar, unless you post before me, I will be posting my sending diplomats to your nation tomorrow. Since we have been neighbors for a while, we obviously would have ties already, like that agreement with oil I proposed a while back, so this will be about influences in Europe, and the problems in the east, etc...

Short History of your Nation:

After the Buddha's death in 542 B.C, the first Buddhist practitioners came to council to codify the Buddha's teachings, and to immunize them from any human corruption. Sponsored by the king of Magadha, the monks came to meet in the city of Rajgir. After hours of debating, the various Arahants (enlightened ones) came to the conclusion that the Buddha's laws were to be followed strictly by all Buddhist practitioners.

As Buddhism organized into a formal sect, the religion quickly gained fame amongst the people of Magadha and acknowledgement from the king, who in 511 B.C. declared Buddhism to be Magadha's official religion. As the religion spread throughout India along with the Kingdom of Magadha, it gained a foothold in local culture, transforming from an obscure sect into universal common knowledge. Asoka's conversion to Buddhism after his conquest of India only served to heighten the spread of the religion, eventually overpowing old Hindu beliefs and becoming firmly rooted in India's culture.

This deep-rooted faith helped play an influential role in halting the expansion of the Sunga Empire, who were deeply opposed to India's new Buddhism-based culture. The Sunga were repelled and eventually collapsed in 43 B.C, leaving northern India a mix of religious 'temple-states', with local religious authorities taking over domestic rule. The Yuezhi invasion in 12 B.C. united these states (along with last tracts of Tibet and Western China) into the Kushan Empire, which kept dominance over the country until its collapse in the 10th century A.D, after Western China was conquered by the Tang Dynasty.

The only suitable nation to fill this huge power vaccum was the growing Tibetan Empire, which recently adopted the Buddhist creed. After overthrowing his brother and claiming the throne of the Empire himself, Thrikhyiding sought to unite the many small Buddhist temple-states under the new Tibetan flag, proclaiming the Tibetan Empire to be a political unification of the Buddhist religion. With growing Islamic influence in the West, and the threat of a Mongol invasion to the North, the temple-states quickly capitulated. Tibet now controlled most of the Himalayas and spread almost all the way to the Hindu Kush.

However, the breadbasket of the Empire, around the Bengal Delta, was under threat. After almost a decade of crippling floods between 1512 and 1520, the Tibetan Empire was left hamstrung. Fearing a rebellion, the current Emperor, Dorje, planned for the gradual overhaul and replacement of the current Buddhist culture. Historically the Tibetan Imperial family and the army were removed from the Buddhist religion, creating a parallel between the 'docile' peasantry and local monk councils and the uninhibited military commanders and royals who created friction between the monks with their lack of belief. Dorje sought a future where Church and State could be interwoven, and upon word of these successful attempts amongst European powers, he looked West to revolutionize his fractured nation.

After ordering, bribing and threatening the Tibetan Arahants (enlightened monks) into redrafting the Buddhist Dharma, without calling a Council to discuss the changes, Dorje sent messengers to all of the major temples to proselytise the local monks into adopting this new 'Militant Buddhism' which encouraged and required the citizenry to act for the good of the nation rather than their own moral good, and advocated warfare against other Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. When an overwhelming majority of the temples rejected the amendment to the Dharma outright, the Emperor instead sought to win over the populace directly, portraying the monks as an aristocracy, a greedy middle-man between the people and their Emperor. In response, the monks held their own council, and many temple-states agreed to relax taxes in an attempt to placate the peasantry. This enraged Dorje, who lost a large portion of his payment from the monks, and in response he used his authority as Emperor to replace most of the monk councils with appointed governers. When the monks didn't capitulate, Dorje mounted a military campaign to supress the temple-states, forcefully evicting religious leaders of major Buddhist sects and taking them captive. Many temple-complexes were then sacked, and the wealth redistributed amongst the citizenry to win support for the new government.

After years in captivity in the Labrang Prison Complex, Dorje (in a fit of paranoia) eventually deemed the elder monks and sect leaders too dangerous to live, and ordered their secret execution. The monks, numbering more than 10,000, were massacred by Tibetan soldiers after their daily prayer, and the corpses buried in mass graves in the side of the mountain where the prison was situated. Meanwhile, new monestaries were formed and supported by the government, raising a generation of monks who were unquestionably loyal to the new Dharma and the Emperor. By the time of Dorje's death, the old Buddhist faith was corrupted beyond recognition; monks answered only to the Imperial family, instead of local advisors and spiritual leaders they became governers and soldiers, and Buddhism was used to justify the expansionist Tibetan political ideology to the point where it became engrained in Tibetan culture.

This made it even easier for Tibet to mount military campaigns against the Thai, who controlled the farmland and temple-cities of Burma. When the Bengal Delta flooded again in 1576, claiming the lives of almost 200,000 people and destroying the important city of Tamralipta, the Emperor responded by organizing a military campaign to provide relief to the area, before moving on southwards to occupy the Burmese temple-city of Arakan. After forcing the local garrison into surrender, the Tibetan army moved on to Bagan, and the South. Whilst Bagan was under siege, splinter forces moved in to pillage the Burmese farmland, the loot from which was used to replenish food stores across Eastern Tibet. Without any food, and any Thai reserve forces repelled by the Tibetan invaders, Bagan surrendered, and Burma became a Tibetan vassal.

This change drastically changed the course of South East Asian history. No longer the dominant power in the area, Thailand sought a closer alliance to the Chinese states, whilst building up and modernizing its forces in a bid to invade and reclaim Burma. Meanwhile, the Tibetans formed new trade routes throughout South East Asia whereby they could trade with the Ming Dynasty, now at the height of its power, and the Roman Empire. In return for raw materials, mostly crops and ores, the Tibetans recieved firearms and schematics, which formed the basis for the Tibetan Model Army, the first standardized army in South Asia. Military and domestic advisors alike sought to streamline Tibet's industry to allow for the mass production of firearms and sailing ships - By 1615, the cities of Calcutta, Chittagong and Rajapura were major trade and military ports, and Tibet was the dominant naval power in the Bay of Bengal. The introduction of handheld firearms amongst the military proved to be a turning point in the string of Tibetan-Thai wars, and despite Tibetan garrisons being often outnumbered by Thai forces, the army won a string of victories in South East Asia, cementing their foothold in Burma.

Currently, the Tibetan Empire is an extremely nationalist state, with the entire culture focused on the strength and unity of the Tibetan nation. To this end, Tibet has managed to organize and modernize itself without much support from the West, and has attempted over recent years to come to equal terms with European powers over issues such as trade rights. Tibet currently boasts one of the largest and most modern militaries in Southern Asia, with exotic tactics (including the use of rocketry and mass infantry charges) unseen elsewhere in the world. Some of the largest cities in the world are based in Tibet, where industry is heavily focused and people are crowded into small planned homes and workshops, and the military police and secret police keep order through their combat expertise and weight of numbers.
Short Description of your nation: An extremely nationalist state, which is quickly modernizing but is still struggling to liberalize whilst still keeping various cultural, social and religious groups unified under the Tibetan banner.
RP example (For nations exceeding 100 million people): Here's one of my best, from a while back...

General population's view on gay rights/gay people: Deeply frowned upon, but since it does not conflict directly with the Buddhist Dharma, prejudice against homosexuals or pansexuals isn't as extreme as in many other nations.
General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Extreme intolerance - Religion is an integral part of Tibetan life, and the Tibetan Buddhist community is the basis of the Tibetan state. Other Buddhists aren't wholly rejected, but are discriminated against and looked down upon for their beliefs, which conflict with Tibetan nationalism.
General population's view on atheism: Widely accepted. Tibetan Buddhism focuses more on Dharma (service/responsibility) rather than spiritual beliefs, and thus a lot of the population, even Tibetan Buddhists, are not necessarily theists.
General population's view on abortion: Abortion is extremely rare, and as cases soon propagated amongst wealthier families it was illegalized by the government. Abortion is seen as a hindrance to the growth of the Tibetan nation.
View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): They are seen as a potential barrier to national unity, but views on various ethnic groups vary widely - Some are accepted and integrated into Tibetan society, and others are outcasts.
Status of religion in politics: Religion is the Emperor's main social and political tool. Tibetan Buddhism itself is a fusion of traditional Buddhism and nationalism.
Any big prejudices in your nation (widespread discrimination against a particular group, linguistic conflict, etc): Many white Europeans, East Asians and Bengalis are seen as threats to the Tibetan state, and there is extreme caution in politics and common society alike when dealing with these groups.
View on immigration into country: Is usually seen as beneficial to the Tibetan state, but naturally certain groups are discriminated against.
View on emigration out of country: Viewed as an act of treason (unless authorized by the government) and abhorred.
Women's Rights: Somewhat equal to men's rights (women are allowed to join the military or become nuns and take similar political positions as men are) though they are expected to work at home or in factories rather than as tradesmen or politicians.
Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Marijuana, alcohol and tobacco are deemed as 'detrimental' to the nation's productivity and are only allowed for sale on national holidays, though personal consumption is legal. Marijuana and alcohol are two major exports, however, and are produced for shipping and sale across the world.
Top 3 exports: Rice and other foodstuffs, woven fabrics, manufactured metal goods.
Top 3 imports: Unrefined metals, tinned food, exotic foodstuffs.

Short Description of your nation: A fiercely independent republic tucked away in the Carpathian Mountains and surrounded by monarchies and Germans. It lost territory to the latter in the late 19th century, prompting a national initiative to create a fortress nation on the Swiss model. Slovakia has since made itself into a dangerous opponent, with universal militia training, defensive works that make use of the terrain, and hundreds upon hundreds of small weapons caches to arm its citizenry rapidly.
