The year is 1885 the Great Powers all eagerly await to carve up the much sought after ‘African cake’. New nations and ideologies have emerged as the struggle for equality and freedom consumes the masses against the walls of the old. While vast and once great empires and families decline and seek salvation. New technology has become available as mankind seeks to push forward driven by curiosity. Democracy, monarchism, dictatorships and a multitude of other governments clash in a quest for survival and expansion. The Great War is still a rising threat as newly risen powers, old rivalries, crumbling empires and colonial ambitions run high. With it comes the introduction of new weaponry more horrific then anything ever seen. These are the problems that face you one of many nations striving for power in an increasingly hostile world. So will you succumb to the forces around you or shall you thrive while others fall. Destiny awaits so rise up nations and claim your destiny!

Jan. 1st,1885
Berlin,German Empire

Kaiser Frederick III saluted the parading soldiers of the German Imperial military as they marched up Unter den Linden wearing their finelly pressed grey uniforms to the sound of Preußens Gloria in the background. Next to him his sons Princes Wilhelm and Henry too saluted while Wilhelm wore the uniform of a army officer his brother prefered his own naval uniform. As well Chancellors Bismarck and Chlodwig, Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst to stood by at attention.

The German empire reigned supreme all thanks to the joint efforts of the liberal Frederick and conservative Bismarck. Though their relationship had been rocky after Frederick should his liberal tendancies and resorted the Reichstag and made Chlodwig joint Chancellor to counter Bismarck the nation was still thriving. Though Bismarck disagreed with Fredericks domestic policy he had to admire the fact that the kaiser had allowed him to continue Germanys current Foreign Policy which worked so well.

Frederick smiled as the troops continued on through Brandenburg Gate and up the street towards the Reichstag were its deputies and representatives had also filled out to show that they two were the faces of Germany and her empire. Indeed Fredericks liberalisation had worked like clockwork he noted happily. However the fall of so many dynastys and their replacement with these Paris Commune style governments was most troubling. Indeed they would have to be addressed. As the parade died down he motioned for the Joint-Chancellors,his osn and the General staff to follow him to Charlottenburg Palace there they would address this troubling situation.

Charlottenburg Palace

"The situation is most odd." Bismarck confessed as Frederick inquired into solutions for the Marxist styled democracies around them. "The fall of France and that fool Napoleon was tolerable. However Russias fall and the exile of Romanovs whom are still cowering here in Germany is not. I agree reform was needed in the land of Tsars however this is to far." he then rose and Bismarck nodded 'Indeed hence is why to prevent this we must," Frederick then cut hyim off "No we cannot reintroduce the Socialist law that would only cause even more horrible ramifications. And i see Chancellor Chlodwig agrees." he pointed to the elderlly man whom then piped up :Indeed if we take such actions we're encouraging revolt. At the moment the Socialists are dorment and the more radical ones are expelled from the party. Hence we're safe." he finished before sitting.

Frederick turned to face Bismarck whom merely bowed "Very well your majesty. However we should isolate these nations at least diplomaticlly. Hence I suggest we meet with the few remaining ruling families and those whom are against these Parisian style Communes. I shall summon the Belgians,Ottomans,Italians and anyone else whom will join us." he then bowed before walking off to complete the Kaisers orders. Frederick was grateful Bismarck was till sharp as ever where we would we be now without him? he shrugged off the thought.

"Field Marshal von Moltke." he addressed teh old Prussian Junker and war hero whom, nodded "I suspect our defensive lines in the east are ready?" Moltke cleared his throat before speaking "But of course your majesty. We have our troops on 24/7 watch nothing crwals on that front without us watching. As well General Alfred von Schlieffen meanwhile has reported the Lothair line (Alasce-Lorraine) is operating at peak efficency. The Kaiser nodded "Very good your all dismissed." and with a bow all exited the room save the Kaiser he looked on through his wndow east.

"Since my winning of the Presidency in October of last year," said President James William Davidson, who is currently talking to his wife and the General, P. G. T. Beauregard. "I have questioned if I really deserve this. During the Second War Between States, Lee had realized that slavery was wrong and put a ban on it. Some were furious but adapted from the blacks. Davis, well Davis was an idiot for using the blacks. However, most do understand why the two previous kept them to help imrpove the economy." Then he turned towards the general and his wife. "Now onto important matters.. Anne if you please." She nodded and left.

Then Vice President Timothy Kent and Navy General Gordon I. Franklin entered. "Thank you for coming, Franklin and Beauregard. I called for this small private meeting due to the claiming of the world's unclaimed land. At the moment, we do not have the funds for claims but what can we do?" One of the President's messengers came in. "Yes, hold on until the end of the meeting. Then I will answer."

Imperial Italian Army (Imperiale Esercito Italiano) Headquarters
Rome, Greater Empire of Italy
January 1st, 1885

Emperor Rinaldo II walked into the room. All the men there, six of them, stood at attention.

"At ease," said the Emperor, walking over to a political map of Europe lying in top of a political map of the world. "Good morning, gentlemen. And Happy New Year. I see the new maps have been delivered."

"Yes sir, freshly finished not a week ago," spoke a man. All of the men there had at least two medals on their chest, but this man had the most.

"Marshal Bianchi!" The Emperor says at a loud tone, smiling and shaking the man's hand. This was General Faustino Bianchi, a man in command of the Royal Army since Emperor Rinaldo was learning how to count. "I am glad to see you've recovered from the flu."

"As am I, sir. I thought I might actually have to retire for a minute. And I'm sure we wouldn't want that!" Everyone chuckled at the joke. "Allow me to introduce you to my new staff." Bianchi then started pointing his hand to the carious commanders. Bianchi's old staff had either retired or were appointed to colonial militia duties overseas. Bianchi first pointed to a man in his mid to late thirties. "This is Major General Thorello Corna, leader of our Albini forces and a Boy General." All three men chuckled as the Emperor shook Corna's hand and repeated his name. Bianchi then pointed at a man that looked 50 years old-ish. "This is Lieutenant General Agostino Cavallo, leader of our cavalry." Bianchi continued, pointing at a man maybe just a couple years younger than the 67 year old Marshal of the Italian Military. "This is Fleet Admiral Giuseppe Marino, commander of our Navy." Bianchi then went on to speak about a mid-fifties man with reading glasses. "This is Lieutenant General Domenico Sapienti, leader of our Colonial Army." Finally finishing, Bianchi pointed at a man in his late 50's or early 60's. "This is Lieutenant General Giovanni Zunino, commander of the Royal Army."

"It is a great honor to meet you all," replied Rinaldo. These men had been raised to their current level by crushing rebellions, so Rinaldo believed these men to be extremely loyal to the throne. "Gentlemen, the situation in Europe is in dire need of attention. This Socialist madness is spreading like a disease. Everything we work towards- everything we have worked towards- can be crushed in one fatal rebellion if we are not careful. I believe that-" Just then, an aide to the Emperor enters the room.

"Excuse me, Your Majesty, but we have received a telegram from the German Empire."

"Very well. I shall finish my business here and then reply. As I was saying, we need to band together with the other non-Socialist states. My ministers and I will work on this, while you shall continue to build our armed forces. Marshal, how are our defensive fortifications?"

"We are building a series of defensive zones on the French border. Also, we have designed a polygonal fort name Fort Reginaldus to be placed at the center point of the border, about five miles away from the actual border itself."

"Very good. What of our technological improvements? Lieutenant General Zunino?"

"Your Grace, we have finished experimenting with adapting our Vetterli rifles' rounds to smokeless powder. Also, we have produced a prototype adaptation of the Vetterli that will fire 4-round box magazines instead of the single shot. We are testing it this month and will start production in two months, if everything goes well. We will roll out the new, smokeless ammunition next week. Those are all of the developments we have now."

"Very well, then. Good work, gentlemen. I must attend to my messages, but keep the planning up," replied the Emperor. He then left the building and took a carriage ride to the Royal Palace, about a mile down the road. The Emperor sat in his office at his desk, holding the telegram. He then went to the Palace's Communications Office (renamed from the Telegraph Office due to the addition of telephone lines going as far as Florence and Naples) and told a technician to send a telegraph to Berlin.

Nanjing, Chinese Capital Territory
Office of the President, Grand Republican Palace
January 1, 1885

President Zan Jin had finished his paperwork for the evening, glancing at the large clock on the opposite end of the room, a few minutes short of 5:15. Finally finished, and in time for the Meeting. He thought, slowly raising himself with a pop of his back and the crinkling of his kneecaps. Age was taking hold him, yet he was only 46, but President of the Republic for 5, and today was the start of another 5 Years in Office. He sighed briefly, stopping at a mirror in his office to fix his collar. He had loosened it previously to relieve the pressure from his neck during paperwork, but looked far too relaxed for his next endeavor - pleasing the Military Machine of China.

He exited his office, nodding a brief bow of hello to the Republic Guards posted outside of his office - who remained stationary. Oh well, a simple greeting may be a bit much for the military folks anyways. He assured himself as he walked down the elaborate halls of the Palace. A few turns and a staircase desent later, he was in front of the Zhao Gao Attendance Hall, a popular meeting place for the President - be it with newspaper journalists, foreign dignitaries, or the Military. His hand rested on the door knob, breathing deep and calming himself, he entered.

A few hours later....

"It is within the best interests for the Navy to acquire Coaling Stations near the Indian Ocean and in the Pacific to ensure our trade reaches beyond our protection."

"Foreign nations will see it as a threat militarily and economically - we need to keep our profile low. Arrogance was the downfall of the Qing during it's Opium War, and it will be ours if we do not keep ourselves under check!"

"But Foreign Nations allow themselves to be all-consuming and powerful, the Qing used words and could not back up their actions! We can do both! They did not know of the British superiority - but we know of the global power of Europe and the Americas."

"Talk will remain talk without action. We need a fall-man, someone who we can show our growing power to. The world will still see China as the sick man that was beat in 1842 and the debtor who could barely pay back it's loans due to a shady deal with the Russians."

"Why on earth should we demonstrate our power? There is no need to do so - our economic projections show us as the largest economy and the site of one of the most explosive growths in industry and railroads. They know that we're powerful, and need no one to harass simply to appease your agenda!"

"Unfounded! Newspapers around the world barely touch on China's growth, it's Military, or its ability! That Frenchman even said 'Let China sleep, for when it awakens, the world will tremble!'"

The Generals of various factions bickered among themselves - the President had been outside of the conversation for quite sometime. There was nothing really to debate about, the President was not a man of fiery words or actions, he was not of noble birth or wealth - he was a child of a modest merchant whose trade was ruined by the Qing taking his money to pay for a loss against a foreign 'barbarian' nation. His father fought in the Civil War, but Zan Jin was just a boy then. He was an adult at its end - he had even served for a time of 4 years. He saw no action, but a veteran was a veteran in the eyes of the Republic. His father had some military success, just enough to gain Zan Jin minor political power in his home province of Shanghai. He began a political career, first serving as Mayor, Representative, District Senator, and then Governor for a shortime. He ran for President in 1880, at age 40, and won with the support of Shanghai Industrialists and urban benefactors to his campaign. Following a a very successful first term, he ran again, being re-elected in 1884 and serving at the beginning of 1885, today being the first official day of his Second Term.

In short, a very bland person. He was able to con form to the industrialists, agrarians, Military, Political, and Economic Machines. His strength was not his moral character or great pursuits, but his mental weakness to pressure. The worst part of it is, Zan Jin understood this. He had a role, and he must play it. It was a sad play that only he knew - but the public of China needed this show to go on, for if he ripped the curtain of the theater to expose the underlying mechanics, he will be phased out quickly. So much for Presidency, and last remembrance.

Zan Jin perked his head up, hearing the closing end of the arguments of the Military Officials. They prepared to address the Congress later in the week with it's new amended proposal, one calling for additional coaling stations for the newly industrialized Navy on unclaimed islands and another for higher security in the Western regions as well as Mongolia. The Officials began to pack away their briefcases, thanking the President for his time, who only nodded and accepted their good-byes with genuine gratitude for their visit and insisted on them returning soon. They all shared a brief laugh as they went, a funny joke about the difference between an American Confederate and a Unionist, as well as a Frenchman and a German or something along those lines, but as they went, leaving Zan Jin alone in the room, he let out a final sigh, placing one shaky hand on top of another, calming himself.

Just five more years. He thought. Just five more years.

January 1st, 1885
Paris, France
Champs-Élysées

Jacques Laval stepped out of the carriage and into the cold Parisian air. Looking around he saw thousands lining the avenue waving the red banner and the newly adopted modified tricolour and cheering the parade of Revolutionary Guards returning from "The War of Liberation" in Indochina. Their red and dark blue uniforms were freshly cleaned and pressed and their muskets and swords were gleaming in the in sun which had fortuitously appeared. Laval walked onto the raised stage where Louis Herriot, the head of the French armed forces, was already standing alongside the leader of the Paris commune and the commissioner of the interior. The four men waved to the crowd and cheered on the parading troops.

When the time came to speak Laval approached the podium. "Comrades, patriots, brothers and sisters, I speak to you today not only in honour of these men, but in honour of all men who selflessly spread the ideals of equality and justice throughout the world. They are guardians of our hopes and aspirations, without their sacrifice we would be nothing. Remember it is you who protect the revolution against those who seek to destroy it. Many of the old families of Europe predicted that our revolution and those like could not succeed, that our ideals could not survive. But today I can tell you that prediction is a fallacy. In America, in Russia, and in Eastern Europe, we see the people rising up and succeeding in taking what is rightfully theirs. Remember, the people united can never be crushed, never be vanquished! Thank you and may the revolution last evermore!

Laval smiled and waved one last time to the ecstatic crowd before turning and walking off the stage to enter a waiting carriage. As soon as he entered the carriage his cheerful and triumphant demeanor was gone, replaced by grim stoicism. As he made his way to his office he knew the monarchies of Europe were massing on the French borders. We he entered his office he immediately requested an update on the construction of the French-German border fortifications then ordered his secretary to send the following message.

There is no doubt that the last few years have been a new dawn for socialism and for the free peoples of the world. However, nefarious forces gather in strength everyday with the goal of installing the old order of greed and oppression back into our countries. I propose that all socialist and communist countries band together to protect the great strides we have successfully undertaken. I would like to hold a meeting of the great leaders of your nations in Paris as soon as possible. Please respond to this message as soon as possible and together we may ensure the free peoples of this earth remain so.

Sincerely,
Jacques Laval, Speaker of the French National Commune

Leopoldville, Congo, Kingdom of Belgium
January 1, 1885

Leopold II stood next to some generals and watched hundreds of soldiers marching in front of them. While the generals saluted the soldiers, the King only nodded with his arms behind his back. In opposite to the generals he didn't have to be nice to those soldiers. No, Leopold felt good as he showed those men his disgust. If they would have been european soldiers, he would probably be proud, but as they were sons of african slaves and farmers he wasn't.

More and more men passed by to his favorite march music. But it was hard to hime to listen to this music while communist and socialist regimes rise all over Europe. He would take care that no socialist will ever touch his beautiful monarchy for sure. Leopold had already heard of the movements at the french border. The fellow monarchies of Germany and Italy had increased the military at the border. A great event for Belgium! France, their biggest threat at the moment, encircled by monarchies. But even though the French were socialists now, Leopold and his government were sure they didn't want to be hostile towards France. Why should they anyways? A communist France was a weakened one and hadn't harmed Belgium at all.

A military officer interrupted the King who was lost in thoughts. "I'm sorry to interrupt your Majesty, but you have received message from the German Empire. We think it's a very urgent issue and you should reply soon." Leopold nodded. "Yes, right. I'm bored by this march anyways", he said and left the generals alone. As he read the letter he nodded. "What did my government say about the letter?" asked Leopold. "They proposed to send you to the meeting, majesty." The King nodded again and started to dictate the reply.

Panslavia
Tito had just announced the next Five Year Plan, an initiative to produce more naval supplies, fishing nets, and boats. Most of the nation celebrated the progress made over the past years, with a few older people still grumbling over the loss of a monarchy, and the Communist takeover.
As soon as the announcement had finished, he walked back into the Ministry of Governance's tall, square, red-brick building, to his Advisers. They congratulated him on a good speech, and presented the letter from the French. He was pleasantly surprised, and began composing an acceptance letter.

We whole-heartedly accept. We who have freed ourselves from the bonds of Capitalism must take steps to prevent the fall back to Capitalism, and spread the word of Marx across the globe. I will arrive as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Mikael Tito, President of Panslavia

After writing the letter, he was briefed on the situation. Panslavia was surrounded by only one friendly power- the USSR. To the north, Austria, who was invariably still angered by the defection of Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia. To the south, the Old man of Europe, the Ottoman Empire. It had recently lost Greece to Christian princes, and could be looking to expand again.

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear neither committedly capitalist nor socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a liberal.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a considerate idealistic egalitarian with many strong convictions.

Official Communiqué from the Peoples Commune of France

From: Peoples Commune of France
To: Governments of the American Union, the USSR, and The People's Democratic Republic of Panslavia.
Security: High

There is no doubt that the last few years have been a new dawn for socialism and for the free peoples of the world. However, nefarious forces gather in strength everyday with the goal of installing the old order of greed and oppression back into our countries. I propose that all socialist and communist countries band together to protect the great strides we have successfully undertaken. I would like to hold a meeting of the great leaders of your nations in Paris as soon as possible. Please respond to this message as soon as possible and together we may ensure the free peoples of this earth remain so.

Sincerely,
Jacques Laval, Speaker of the French National Commune

Sultan Abdul Hamid II sat on the throne in his royal palace in Istanbul. He had had a political map of the world brought to him. The Balkans was pure chaos, those communists that rebelled from Austria were directly above Ottoman territory. The USSR was just across the Black Sea. There were two communist nations cutting the Ottoman Empire off from Europe. The French communists were also a bother, as they could endanger Ottoman territory in Africa. He would have to find a way to ensure there were no attempts at overthrowing the empire. Perhaps an alliance?

A messenger walked in to the room, and bowed, presenting a telegram to the Sultan. Abdul smiled as he read the message. Just what he needed.

It is heartening that there are still western powers free from the claws of communism. While the Ottoman Empire and the west have never truly had good relations, I agree that an alliance is in order to ensure our nations' security. The Ottomans could provide assistance in ways of construction, as Ottoman industry is one of the strongest in the world. An item of note is the fact that The German Empire and Italy are on the other side of several communist nations then the Ottomans. This could, should bad turn to worse, be a boon to our cause, giving us capability to force them to fight on two fronts.

I will personally attend your meeting.

Hoping to hear from you soon, Sultan Abdul Hamid II, ruler of the Ottoman Empire

Vice President Timothy Kent got ready to go on the SS Universe, which was popular due to the drinks, gambling, and fancy critiques. The ship was going to be escorted by the Stonewall, the most powerful ship in the Confederate Navy. Commanding the ship is Commodore George Nuetro.

After five hours out at sea, VP Timothy Kent said to Captain Johnathon Hughes, "Depending on the instruments and available resources at hand, Captain, how long will it take us to get to Genova?"
"I would say," said the Captain, who went over the work again, "four to five days."
"Shorter than expected," said the VP. "Excellent. Now, care to join for breakfast, captain?"
"I am sorry Mr. Vice President," said the Captain. "But I am going to have to take a rain check. We are still completing some tests, like we always do as precautions."

Berlin

Bismarck was pleased as he showe the letter to the Kaiser whom smiled "Very good. Send responses immiediatlly. And have Berlin readied we must prepare for our guests." Frederick added and Bismarck with a bow left the Emperor to handle other affairs. Amongst them the colonies. As the French communists held territories rather close to their own he would have to increase colonial troop sizes however he had to amintain Germanys infamous Lothair Line in the west and the Clauswitz Line in the east. Already there we're German military advisors whom'd trained the locals to serve under the banner of the Empire and for the most part their efforts had borne fruit. Very well he would have the Governors proceed with such actions then.

To: Italy
From: German Empire

I thank you for joining us in Berlin for this Conference. Though a liberal I view the cmmunist revolutions unacceptable and the restoration of their proper monarchs should be arranged. However first and foremost we must defend our own borders and am certain that this alliance will offer the means by whih to do so.

Sincerely,
Kaiser Frederick III von Hohenzollern, German Emperor and King of Prussia

To: Confederate States of America
From: German Empire

We gladly welocme your vice-President to our most glorious nation. The Empire wishes taht both our nations might prosper from this Conference. And also taht we might form closer bonds from it as well. i wish yourself, your people and your nation wealth and propserity. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Kaiser Frederick III von Hohenzollern, German Emperor and King of Prussia

To: Belgium
From: German Empire

We are most thankful for your decison to join us in Berlin to discuss the current global situation at hand regarding the outbreak of these Parisan Commune styled governments. We hope yourself a safe journey to Berlin and that god protect yourself, your people and your antion. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Kaiser Frederick III von Hohenzollern, German Emperor and King of Prussia

To: Ottoman Empire
From: German Empire

I sympathise with your most honourable nation. Germany herself faces such a threat as like you it is surrounded on all sides by hostile powers. As the French are not only staunchly anti-German but also a communist government at that. And like you the Russians stand at our gates in th east. Hence we especially wish to aid your nation to defend itself. Hence we propose that German military advisors be sent to your nation to help prepare you should this unholy Pan-Slavic nation or the false Russian nation dare attack. We hope taht your journey as well to Berlin is a safe one at that. Thank you may god protect you and your nation.

Sincerely,
Kaiser Frederick III von Hohenzollern, German Emperor and King of Prussia

Douala,German Cameroon

Jesko von Puttkamer,Governor of Cameroon barked orders at the new recruits from some unpronouncible tribe in the colony. These orders where in turn relayed through a translator and for the most part they did rather well he noted. At the moment some 6.000 German troops were stationed here in Cameroon. He'd asked for 10,000 seeing as the damn Frenchies held a colony to close for his liking. The Kaisers recent approval of his colonial troop program was going well over 1,000 had been trained and more were arriving. True they weren't true German soldiers but they made up with a sense of zeal and bravery. He smiled if this was kept up he may require only a hundred German soldiers he chuckled silently.

The Emperor read the telegram just as he was boarding the train. He continued, sitting down in the luxury car with three soldiers and his staff that he brought along with him. An aide passed out glasses of water. The train blew a whistle before slowly getting to it's cruising speed- around 80 MPH.

(Time Skip)

7:00 PM, At a Berlin Train Station

The train station was a large one, possibly built to service the central part of Berlin. 10 of the fifteen soldiers left the train and formed a hallway to the station exit. Four men escorted the Emperor- one in front, one on both sides, and one behind. One soldier stood on top of a train car. Three of the bodyguards, including the one on the roof, went back into the train as it rolled off to go and wait in Milan. The Emperor entered a carriage. A bodyguard climbed to sit next to the driver, with the rest of the area in the carriage being taken up by more body guards. The staff and other bodyguards occupy two other carriages, one in front and one in rear of the Emperor's. The carriage drive was somewhat short, but the palace was grand in size and extravagance, much like the Emperor's own Quirinal Palace in Rome.

The Emperor entered the foyer of the palace with his aides and a bodyguard, The rest waiting outside in a line. The King is led to a salon by a man who greets him by the door. The man pounds his cane on the floor before shouting "Now presenting, by the Grace of God, His Majesty Emperor Reginaldus di Savoie the Second, Emperor of Italy and Her Colonies!" All the noble people turned and bowed as the Emperor walked through the room, taking a seat. The man tells him,

"The Kaiser has been notified of your arrival."

Berlin

Kaiser Frederick III smiled as he greeted the Emperor of Italy. Charlottenburg Palace was now drapped in Italian and German flags. Italian speaking staff were called up to add. Amongst other things. And the Italian Emperor had been gioven one of the palaces larger suites. Stepping forward and flanked by Bismarck,Chlodewig and his sons Frederick smiled speaking in Italian 'Your excellency a pleasure to meet you." he outstreched his hand to the Italian Emperor. While the others stood by watching the Belgian,Ottoman, and Confederate leaders would also be in Berlin soon and all was being readied for them as well.

The board of representatives sat around the mahogany table, tailored black suits and solemnly clasped hands giving the atmosphere of a funeral. "Gentlemen, we face a grave situation, our economy," the leading figure (Dominic Lance) addressed the congregation. "Stocks collapsed and all our shares have been rendered worthless, we must discover a solution to fix this problem." He turned his back on them to gaze out the large glass window of the tall, modern building. "We must either resort to conquer or die. Imperialism, my good men, is the only true way to advance," crossing to the door he presently threw it open and an escort of soldiers marched in a machine gun trailing behind. "This is our survival."

"Ihre Majestät, die Freude ist ganz meinerseits. Entschuldigen Sie mein gebrochenes Deutsch," the Emperor said , trying to remember his language classes while in school in Switzerland. The Kaiser smiled "If you have such trouble with German my friend please let us speak in your tongue." he replied cheerfully in Italian. "Now you are our first guest to arrive so please tell me what do you think of the German Empire?" he grinned. Meanhile his staff and that of the Italian Emperors had also begun to mingle. Bismarck however stood by the Kaiser awaiting his own time to speak.

Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin, Germany

The King and six of his guards arrived in Charlottenburg Palace on horse. They had directly started to travel to Germany after they sent their reply and hadn't really stopped since then. They travelled with a ship of the belgian navy to Austria and continued their voyage from their. At first they travelled per train, but as they reached the surrounding countryside of Berlin they decided to continue on horses loyal employees of the Belgian royal house had brought there before. A carriage with all they had with them followed them. This carriage was followed by another one, filled with servants and advisors of the King. The queue ended with another 3 guards on horses protecting the carriages from behind.

As they arrived in Charlottenburg Palace, the servants of Leopold II directly gushed out of their carriage to help him unmounting the horse and straighten out his cloths. "Alléz!", he ordered and gave his advisors the sign to follow him into the palace.

"I must say, you rule a truly beautiful county. From the countryside of Bavaria to the architecture in Berlin, Germany has left me agape," replied Rinaldo, turning to a finely mustachioed man next to the Kaiser. "I assume this is the Mr. Bismarck that I have heard so very well about?" Rinaldo turned and extended his hand.

The honour guard awaiting the King of Belgium stood outside the palace with them was Crown Prince Wilhelm whom was wearing the uniform of a Prussian cavalrymen. Stepping forward he bowed as King leopold exited teh carriage "Your majesty I am Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany and Prussia. January 5, 1885
Lisbon, Portugal

"The engine of SS Universe started to fail around a day ago, Captain," said one of the engineers, wiping his hands and forehead. "This doesn't usually happen to these types of ships unless its age is starting to show or if it is--"
"Sabotage," Hughes interrupted. "This ship was built eight years ago and will last another 22 years. Someone tried to sabotage us so the Vice President wouldn't make it to the conference in Berlin." He scratched his head. "Question is, who would want to do this?"
"Could be the US," said the engineer. "Looks to me that they want revenge because of the Civil War."
"Do not make assumptions yet," said the Captain. "But it is likely. It was because of the Confederates that the industrial, midwestern, and western areas also saw oppurtunity to secede. Anyway, have some of your engineers buy any necessary parts in the market here in Lisbon. Dismissed, Jimmy." Jimmy nodded and left. Then Hughes went to explain to Kent.

"Well, I choose not to go through France," said Kent. "Even if they helped us, I do not fully trust them. I will have to right a letter to Kaiser Frederick III explaining why I would possibly be late." Then he called out to one of his messengers, who, fortunately, the VP brought along. As the messenger walked his way to the VP, Timothy finished the message. "Deliver this to the Kaiser in Berlin."

To: Kaiser Frederick III
From: Vice President Timothy Kent

I will most likely be late for the conference due to engine failure aboard the SS Universe. We are currently in Lisbon for repairs, refuel, and restock. The Commodore of the Stonewall, the SS Universe Captain, and I believe this to be sabotage. Though, we do not know who yet.

The King and his men followed the Prince. "I've heard of you, only positive things of course. It's nice to meet you in person, your highness."
Leopold was impressed by the beauty and elegance of the palace. He should build some new things too, he thought to himself.
