Bran led Swith to the Kitchen and started cooking. He decided to comment about Dani's replacement.

"So that's who that lady was in the lobby? She just stood there for the longest time scanning the room."

"I do not want one!" said Giovenith suddenly, shrinking down. "Do not make me get one! It is good for you, not me."

"Giov, dear, I'm not going to make you get one. You know me well enough that I don't force anything on anyone. I was merely making a suggestion should you find yourself in the Zone at any point in time. But if you don't, that's fine. The only other option then for you would be to find a solid place to hid until the emission's over. The Zone is full of places like those so you don't have to get a mark." She said, trying to comfort her.

She sat down and flicked at a stray eyeball with her finger. "Anyway, what were you going to say, Gretta?"




"Afraid so, Bran," Swith said, handing him the spray for the iron. "We don't know if she's more powerful than Dani was. She'll be one to watch. I've fortified our apartment to withstand another assault, just to be safe, and I've already woven organic optics through the building to replace the camera hardware. It will be difficult for her to destroy or corrupt it."

NVE, you can't possibly expect to bring your girlfriend home to nasty old bedsheets. It's tacky. Time to make a new smelly nest." She suddenly had a wild vision of a bunch of small-headed Grettas and NVEs chirping from an overly large uniform nest. Naomi bit her tongue, but she was temped to ask if she could babysit in the future. Perhaps not, she told herself, because it would probably involve a lot of painful nips.

"Why were you trying to hide your hunting activities, anyway," she asked. "Everyone knows how much you like Chinese takeout."



Swith laughed. "You can carry more than groceries with that thing, Bran. Oh... is it too late to fly? Can you fly in the dark?"
