Well, as far as I remember, and as far as a brief glance through Wikipedia tell me.....for the most part, yes. Florence was under the Medici family, who went on to unify and control almost all of Tuscany for around what, two centuries? Something like that. They only lost power in the mid-1700s, when it got absorbed by....someone I can't remember.
