In early April of 2011, a revolutionary communist party emerged in the Congo. It had support from the poorer citizens as well as other regions of Africa. The wealthier regions in the Congo, Katanga in particular, knew they would be exploited under such a regime. In order to defend them they made an opposition right-wing party backed by a para-military wing of mercenaries from the Sub-Sahara. Conflicts ensued and a civil-war was looking imminent. By February 2012, the US had deployed troops to the Congo to calm the conflict and aid the Congolese government. They came under heavy fire from the revolutionaries and faced a much larger threat than first thought. By July they had increased troops in the Congo to 80,000 and were being supported by a separate force of UN troops. Now, in October of 2012, the fighting has reached a high, the communists have taken control of 70% of the country and are looking at a huge victory.
I'm not sure how feasible this story is but it may do for a simple character RP, the politics behind it don't really matter do they? If I remember correctly Katanga has a huge deposit of very valuable resources so external nations have plenty of reasons to be there.
You will RP as a troop on the ground in the Congo, either a US/UN(from a country of your choice) or a revolutionary or a mercenary.
