1919: Beginning of the End [IC/Closed unless you signup]

Map
OOC

The year is 1919. Germany and the fellow Central Powers have been defeated, and the Soviet revolution has become into full-swing. The German monarchy today hangs in a balance of problem. Will Germany abolish the monarchy and form a republic, or will Wilhelm II manage to keep his small grip on what's left of the German fatherland?

As for the war, the Treaty of Versailles was signed on November 7, 1918, and Germany has lost the Polish corridor, such and such, and has to pay massive reparations to the French, English, and Americans. Thankfully, the Allies let them keep the Rhineland... for now. In Asia Minor, the defeated Ottoman Empire is being carved up by the Treaty of Sevres, while Russia fights to establish a proletarian revolution, fighting the White Russians in Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Siberia, who are all backed by the Entente Powers who have left Germany and Austria behind to fester in their defeated pity to fight the Bolshevik menace.

What country will you be, and what path will you take in this dark time of human history?

(Note: Belarus and Ukraine are independent currently and are in throes of Civil War. Russia is being invaded by the Entente, who are focusing on defeating the Bolsheviks.)

January 1, 1919
Huis Doorn, Netherlands

The 60-year old man stood before the moderate manor he now made his home. His name? Wilhelm Hohenzollern, the recently abdicated monarch. His friends in the Netherlands had refused to extradite him to France to face crimes, aswell as his cousin in Britain. He sighed and folded his hand in his pocket. "My weltkrieg was a mistake..." He sighed and walked into the house.

January 1, 1919
Weimar

"The current constitutional revision we have put forth is within operational boundaries for Germany. But this part here..." Kurt von Schleiser said, tapping his finger to a Constitutional part, "A referendum on republic or monarchy by February?" One of the senate associates, the leader of the Deutsche Arbeiter Partei, Adolf Hitler, spoke, "I believe this referendum will allow the people a choice on wether or not to install monarchy or republic, and will give Germany legitimacy." Adolf motioned his hands to his associate, Alfred Hugenberg, the leader of the German Monarchy Party, who said, " Of course, it makes sense, doesn't it?"

They nodded and Schleiser tapped the gavel to the table, "Motion passed. The referendum will be held in 30 days time."

January 1, 1919
Berlin

Chancellor Wilhelm, Kronprinz of the German Empire, sat at his desk, sighing when a telephone call came in, "The new Constitution has been approved. The referendum will be held in 30 days. I've informed your father in Huis Doorn, and he's elated." Wilhelm said, "I hope Father understands that due to the Treaty of Versailles, if he returns to Germany, he faces prosecution by the French." The man on the phone said, "Yes, but he wishes to be part of the future of Germany to fix his mistakes made during the Weltkrieg and before."

Wilhelm sighed. A long way ahead was being forged.

(OOC: I want to warn everyone that my Francesco Saverio Nitti would be mostly OOC. I haven't study his political philosophy and his decision enough to fully known his moves, and I'm really gonna speed up the rise at power of Mussolini, way before the original data.
I'm sorry if someone feels bad for this.)

The journals in Italy spoke clearly of what was going on in the little penisula...and things weren't good for Nitti.

His party and his ideals ended up supporting the Red Army of the Turin and Milan workers who occupied the factories to ask for socialist accords for work...but not only the king, but many people didn't agree with this movement. And of course, gaining the trust were the ones going around like organized criminals, those MVSN ended up almost being praised for beating the innocent people.

This Benito Mussolini was taking way too much power, he maybe had to talk about him at the Senate. He couldn't just mass an army while no one was doing something against him. Hell, even police were helping him arresting only socialist during the fights!!! Was Italy already become a military state? Well, not on his watch.

Vienna January ist 1919

The halls of Schönbrunn Palace were quiet empty to be frank Renner noted as he walked down the halls towards the conferance room that occupied the former throne room. It had been a horrible few months for Austria. her empire was gone her economy devestated though revcovering thank god he noted. The Habsburgs semi-reigned to the joy of the natioanlists in the form of young Otto, Crown prince of austria. Seitz was the boys regent despite the protests of his father Karl von Habsburg however for good reason Renner noted as he continued his walk. The young Prince meanwhile was probably at school during this point of the day. His mother and father meanwhile in the upstairs apartments complaing about the fall of order as they so called it. However tough love he spat in his mind. Austria had to cut back a LOT and that included servants. At least it was better then Hungary he shivered those poor bastards were in a hole all their own.

As Renner took his seat in the room he looked about. Next to him was his co-Chancellor the facist Engelbert Dollfuss. He was a short man by all regards and sported a small mustache and a rather trumped up uniform if Renner had ever seen. For the good of the state though he reminded himself. At the very head of a long open though rectangular table was President and Regent Karl Seitz whom sat before an empty throne mounted on a pedestal with Austrias flag behind it. Renner meanwhile sat next to Jodok Fink his own deputy and Dollfuss to Ernst Rüdiger Starhemberg their respective vice-Chancellors. "Shall we begin?" Seitz questioned as a secretary then finished with attendance of all of the Cabinents members.

"Now as we all know those bastards at St.Germine have clipped our wings to be frank. Alas with barelly any troops in fighting condition we had to sign the damn thing. Worst of all we also have a crumbling economy. Wehave several options take up the bastards offer of 'loans' as loan shark as they might be or we can tough it out. However our good Minister of Finance states we'll have to slash a lot." one man then spoke "I suggest we go with the later I have no intentions of sucking some Entente nations cock!" he yeleld infuriated by the suggestion." Dollfuss then stood up "I agree we are austrians! We survived the Turks! Napoleon and we wills survive a goddamn recession! Hence I say NO we must take a stand!" Renner meanwhile sat for a moment as the delegates now turned to him "I suggest the state take full control of the economy. We can't be to careful we need to nationalse all important industries. Reinvest in the economy . But we leave the smaller buisnesses alone." with that the room nodded in approval.
Finally one man stood up Field Marshal Alexander von Krobatin one of Austrias few good commanders. "I understand this idea my friends however what of the army? Austria is weak. We have lost much. Our troops have been cut down to size. We cannot field a large army or face international condemnation. We have two options in my own opinion. We can ally with the Germans but we would be reliant on them. And they too have suffered. or we can push on we can rebuild and I suggest put in conscription. We need to defend what liitle remains. The Italins are blood thirsty and divided the czechs god knows what they have planned. And finally the Hungarians are utterly divided. While those Slavic hordes in Belgarde await the time to strike." with that he too then returned to his seat. And the delegation now debated. The two questions on the floor it was to be a long day.

1st Jan. 1919 Prague
There were many people awared of the current situation of Czechoslovakia in the international politics but Czechoslovakia have also big problems inside its own borders...
The Chamber of deputies and then senate have agreed on building of fortification in Bratislava and Těšín to prevent important cities from invasion from Poland and Austria and Hungary. It was hard decision because building of fortress in Bratislava was prohibited by the 56 article of Saint-Germain treaty but it was a key thing for Czechoslovakia and president Masaryk signed under this.
The work have started soon and now the fortification is build in fact only from sandbags and barbed wire but its planned to built even bunkers in Bratislava and Těšín.Both cities have large garrisons from the declaration of independence but its better to be sure.

Tokyo, Empire of Japan, house of the Prime Minister
The Prime Minister looked over a map of the empire, the size of which Japan had never dreamed. With Korea, Formosa, and now all the German land in the far east things were looking up for his nation. However things had to be addressed, the navy was too bold, too independent, they would need a shorter leash. They would also have to learn to work with the Army better, like the other nations of the world and how they ran their military. He patted a spot on the map, it was called Vladivostok, and he didn't want it in the hands of the Soviets. They would have to insure the dreadnoughts of the Pacific Fleet didn't fall into Communist hands. He began form letters to request battle plans for a Siege of Valdivostok, best to strike as they change their government, then blame it on the Tzar or Lenin, depending on who won.

London, British Empire, Japanese Embassy
A Japanese Ambassador formed a request of the Government of the British Empire, that in light of Japan's extraordinary service in preserving British shipping in the Far East that they be allowed some small tokens of gratitude in the forms of the airships LZ113, and LZ114 along with the U-66 and U-141. Other requests included the rights to produce Kar-98 type rifles under their own Arisaka brand, along with several of these rifles for study. Of course all of this was simply a request, and relied on the idea of British good will over their help in the War to End all Wars.

Berlin
January 1, 1919 1430

Präsident des Senats (President of the Senate) Kurt von Schleiser appeared in the public park within the same day of the election of the new constitution to announce it formally to the German people. Kurt appeared and his voice filtered over radio, reaching all the German-speaking populaces, from Alsace, a German-majority province under French authority, to Memel, a German-majority city under Lithuanian control.

Countrymen of the German Reich,

Today, the Constitutional Congress assembled and discussed the new terms of the constitution that will lead our nation to the future. Myself included, Kurt von Schleisen, the Senate worked tirelessly.

This February, a public plebisicite will be held to determine the future of the Kaiser's throne. Then, you, the Germans will have the choice to vote for Republic... or Monarchy.

However, this does not take away the growing issue of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, signed in Paris...

Germany will continue paying her debts to the best of her ability, and will seek closer relations with both Great Britain and Austria.

Do not fear the day, Germany. The sun is just rising again.

He stated quietly, "Until the plebiscite, a temporary Head of State organization will be put together under a triumpverate of Myself, Adolf Hitler, and Ernst Thalmann, the three of us, representing each of Germany's political spheres, will cooperate to maintain the country's stability until the February Plebiscite."

The people cheered and Kurt waved to the people and left.

Paris Government Offices:

Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau and President Raymond Poincaré sat in an office, smoking cigars as they went over reports from various areas of the world. They were devising a plan for the future of Europe, a Europe united with France as a leading force. A priority for an alliance was the new former-Hapsburg state of Czechoslovakia.

To: The Government of Czechoslovakia

Mes amis, it is with great pleasure that I address the new nation of Czechoslovakia, carved by national pride and by war from an ancient empire now dead and gone. France and Czechoslovakia are in a unique position to be helpful to each other. Our resources, though whittled down by the war, are still vast. As the post-war Europe goes through the throws of change, it would be an important stabilizing factor if our nations were to enter a direct alliance, give our positions on either side of Germany. Please respond soon.

Bon chance,

Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau
President Raymond Poincaré
Et tout la France.

President Masaryk was sitting in his office when the message from France arrived.
He quickly read it and then called for Karel Kramář and together they wrote the answer.

To: government of France, Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau, President Raymond Poincaré

"Dobrý den, přátelé!
I have read your message and i agree with you in every part!France and Czechoslovakia are key countries in Europe but both our countries are now having problems, your country was the most devastated by war with Russia in Europe. We are still encircled with potetial enemies like Hungary, Austria and now Poland. Now when Germany is not a threat we can focus on improving our defence on other "fronts".We will gladly accept any alliance with France and we are also interested in making new
agreements with your glorious country!

The cabinent that left the rooms of Schönbrunn Palace had debated and discussed it's options they were few but what they did was for the glory of Austria. Renner then walked up to Seitz whom was chatting with Foreign Minister Otto Bauer. "Herr President? May I have a word with you. Nice to see you as well Otto." Renner smiled as Seitz oblidged and with a handshake Bauer walked off to another group. "What is this about Renner?" Seitz questioned. "How will you explain the actions we have taken here to the people and more specifcly the army? The Marshal is a good man true but he's still the defacto head of our military." Renner finished Seitz merely sighed "I know I know. We wiill have to cope as Austria has always done for the glory of the nation." he added however he to had doubts. "I'm going to announce this over the radio tommorow Dollfuss and yourself will also mprepare a joint statement." Seitz added "Now Minister Bauer and I have to discuss the foreign implications of this in greater depth. Good day Renner." he added Bauer meanwhile stepped forward "He is a remarkable man isn't he?" Bauer questioned "Indeed." "Well Karl I'll see you later I assume myself and Mrs.Bauer are still invited to dinner?" he questioned "But of course Otto. Have a pleasent day." with that the two ld colleagues walked off in separate directions.

Vienna,Austria Jan.2nd 1919

Federal Radio Vienna began it's usual program begun first with the national anthemn and pledge of loyalty to the people, the state, and the crown. Then Seitz stepped forward behind him Dollfuss and Renner stood bye awaiting their own time to inform the people of Austria the decision reached in the walls of Schönbrunn. Seitz then recieved the signal to proceed "Good evening my fellow Austrians and patriots. Yesterday the cabinent of the Crown Republic reached a decision which we hope will ensure Austrias economic, domestic and foreign stability. We have reached these decisions with the utmost care, dilligence and thought. As of last night we voted in favour of a Socialist based economic policy. As of today the government will be taking over all major industries. Which will be used to allow the reinvestment of profits for the Austrian people. All lesser industries will remnain in private hands meanwhile. Finally on the ever deepening military question we will be reforming the Federal Army to a force of 100,000 troops for the meantime under Field Marshal Alexander von Krobatin and Col.General Arthur Arz von Straußenburg. In regards to the paramilitary question it has been left in the hands of the army to reach that decision. I pray that you will accept these proposals are for the good of the nation. God bless Austria and may he keep us safe." Renner and Dollfuss soon gave similar statements and also both declared support for the plan. With that Austria had choosen her course and they all hoped this course was the correct one.

In the rooms of the War Minstry six men stood bye idly deciding what was to be done in response to the 'Paramilitary' question that had been left in their hands. All of them were the former commanders of the Austro-Hungarian army some Field Marshals, some Generals. Some were disgraced others applauded nontheless they had to reach a decision. They included Field Marshals Archduke Eugen of Austria,Hermann Kövess von Kövessháza,Alexander von Krobatin, Colonel Generals Arthur Arz von Straußenburg and the retired Count Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf. The latter Hötzendorf was a disgraced man to say the least however he was needed to keep the aristocrats appeased to boast. They all understood they controlled the hordes of tired, broke and angry soldiers that walked the c=streets of Austria there was much to decide. "Shall we begin?" the Archduke noted and with that nthey began the tedious talks on what to do. And more importantly the place of the military in this new Austria.

King Alfonso XIII,
Madrid, Spain
January, 1919

Alfonso held the rag to his mouth, coughing slightly. The 33 year old King had just finally recovered from the Spanish Flu; while it had not originated in Spain, it had crossed the French border so rapidly that most thought it started there. Millions had died. The population of Spain dropped 4.2%. King Alfonso tried to keep the morale of his people up: he made tours of hospitals, visited schools. Unfortunately, it was doing this that contracted him the Spanish Flu. He was out of it for months; at first, his government was able to hide this from the people. Inevitably though, word got out.

Now, mostly re-cooperated, he took up his rounds again. He visited hospitals and schools, in an effort to raise morale again; and it was working. "This sickness has gotten in the way of my goals.." He muttered to his Foreign Affairs minister. "Yes mi'lord. I believe that if we give it a month or so, we could revitalize those plans. The world still recovers from the First World War, yet we remain an economic powerhouse, despite the flu. The Allies remain deep in Russian territory. It would be best to move as soon as possible." The King nodded, "Very well, see that the preparations are done."

Mister President,

I hope you are well. I seek a Non-Aggression Pact between our two great nations; while I know our two nations have a troubled past, I want to get away from that. I await your reply,

New York Harbor, New York

"Well, Herr Roosevelt, we understand you are about to go before a military tribunal, is that not true?" Erich Raeder said to the shadowed and covered up figure sitting near him. "Of course I am. The damn conservatives have managed to get me shamed. My cousin's out in China, and I'm under fire. Are you SURE your people are going to take me?" Raeder nodded and said, "Chancellor Wilhelm and Co-President Hitler have both expressed interest in you."

Franklin Delanor Roosevelt nodded and said, "I understand this, but I couldn't really hold public office in Germany, I'm still a politican, Raeder." Raeder said, handing Roosevelt a card id naming him a German national, "This will let you hold office." Raeder pointed to the private yacht, "We're taking you to Wilhelmshaven."

FDR nodded and walked onto the ship and looked at his homeland and saluted it and said, "Yes, let's go."

Hitler turned his attention out of his window and said to Goering, "I'm not sure what side to take, Goering. The monarchy seems to be a stronger set, as a republic isn't... good enough to harness German power." Goering nodded and said, "Well we do have Kronprinz Wilhelm as the Chancellor. Maybe we can talk to him about it."

Hitler frowned and picked up the telephone. A voice said, "We have acquired Target-FR and are returning home. Broadcast from International Waters earlier today, sir." Hitler nodded and said, "An American naval expert is heading here. He was the Secretary of the Navy in the United States, maybe he can help rebuild the Reichsmarine."

Goering said, "What about Raeder and what's his face... Donitz?" Hitler said, "They're loyal, yes, but not sufficient enough alone. Having Herr Roosevelt on our side is very helpful." Goering said, "And of Tirpitz?" Hitler said, with a bit of annoyance, "He's an old man! This is not helpful to the nation, okay, Hermann? Go talk to Richtofen about the Luftmarine, we need to have a functional air-force in the cards quickly."

Hermann nodded and left.

He folded his hands and got back to work.

Adevărul - Romanian News

The news for January 2, 1919.

Culture - Foundation of the Opera Națională București
Romanians national Opera has been opened to public today. King Ferdinand I and Marie of Edinburgh were the first guests to attend.
The first official piece played was Guiseppe Verdi's "Aida" .

Politics - Change of Course
Even though the liberal party was elected, the peasant parties are on the rise. The Partidul Poporului is a clear candidate for the next election. If they win, the minister of foreign affairs Alexandru Averescu will most likely become new prime minister.

Romanian General Ion Antonescu is said to lead a fascist movement. The movement is called Mișcarea Legionară, Legionnaire movement, and presents itself anti-semitic. For now 1420 members have been counted. Neither the General or any government members have given a statement, but this party seems to become a possible candidate for the next elections.

Finances - Intelligence or Order?
The Parliament will discuss about government spending soon. Head topic will be the demanded military expansion.
On the other hand the government also has to discuss about the few educated people.
"It is duty of the government to insure everyone is equally educated. Education is the key to progress", said Averescu.
King Ferdinand I shares the opinion a stronger military is more important nowadays.

People - Charles Chaplin is liked
US-american actor Charles Chaplin is said to be one of the most liked international actors in Romania.
The Vagabound was one of the most seen movies in the past years.

Novosibirsk, Central Siberia, 1919

The Russian Civil War has dragged on for nearly 2 grueling years as the Reds and Whites battled for control over the broken country. Even with its military and finical advantage, the once powerful White Armies are on their last legs. The city of Omsk, the last great White stronghold in Western Siberia has fallen to the unrelenting Red Army. Now with gates to central Siberia open, the war to drive out the imperialist remnants shall enter its last stages.

For three weeks now, the 2nd and 5th Red Armies along with allies from local soviet militias have marched eastwards towards Novosibirsk. Though underequipped, starved, and tired from their ordeal, morale among the troops remains high. They have fought and won numerous battles in the name of the people and the strength of communism shone through the determination of the proletariat in this struggle.

The White Army was broken, losing battle after battle they were first driven from their strongholds in Western and Central Russia, then Central Asia, and now finally cornered into remote outposts in Siberia. Troops from the White army deserted in droves as they too saw the inevitable fall of imperialism. Communications to their counterparts in Ukraine and Belarus was cut off and there was little hope that reinforcements from foreign sympathizers would reach them in time. Admiral Kolchak ordered for his troops to make their last stand at Novosibirsk, the de facto capital of White Russia and the last major city under White Control. The city must not fall, for it its does, then it would mean the end of the White movement east of Kyiv.

The Soviet attack, when it came, was large, well-coordinated and brutally efficient. Consecutive waves of infantry bashed against the White trenches in three separate locations. It was only a matter of time before one section of the demoralized White army gave way. When it does, then the Red army will move in for the kill, going street by street to root out the imperialist counter revolutionaries that stood against the great proletariat revolution. The end was in sight.

To: Allied Powers of United States, Britain, France and Japan

To all imperialist powers of the West, as the fall of Omsk has shown, the time of the White Movement is at its end. Novosibirsk will fall, Krasnoyarsk will fall, and soon Vladivostok shall once again belong to the hands of the Russian People. The sun of Imperialist Russia has set and instead a new light has risen in its wake, a red dawn that shall engulf the nation and bring it to a new age.

The age of communism shall bring forth unprecedented prosperity to Russia and purge all the ills that beset the motherland. Those who acknowledge the power of progress shall move forward while those who deny the truth shall be left in the dark. My fellow heads of states; it is your choice whether your nation shall move forward and is one with the future or left behind and be forgotten in the annals of history. Those who choose stand with the new Russia; she will smile upon them with her favor. Those who stand against her beware, for she has a long memory.

Glory to the Soviets

Chelyabinsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia

When the Czechoslovak Legionaries heard about Bolshevik victories many of them have decided to join the Bolshevik forces and help them with their profesionality and legionaries had also large amounts of weapons and various heavily armed trains.
More then 25,000 soldiers (from 40,000 legionaries in Russia) have joined Bolsheviks but they dont trust to the Germans and Hungarians which also joined the Red Army because most of them were prisoners.Commander of the "Red Legionaries", colonel Václav Hašek now waits for orders from Lenin and Trotsky.
Rest of the legions are moving towards Vladivostok while using the Trans-Siberian Railway as highway through Russia and then sail back to Czechoslovakia. They simply want to return to their homes as their comrades from legions in France and Italy already did.

Turin, Italy

The streets were in chaos while the police were trying to bring order, or more clearly to beat anyone who seemed to be on the socialist side. Some black fascist were being arrested too, but they were mostly the wounded who needed to be dragged away for medical attentions.

The day started so good, until this explosion of violence came apparently from the center of the town. But to understand it, we have to go on yesterday, near a bar; during a discussion between filo-fascists and socialists, a shot was fired by one of the two sides, nobody could recognize the murderer, but a poor boy, son of a local industrial, were killed.
During his funerals today, the fascists ordered to anyone to remove their hats in sign of respect, and even the socialist obeyed, since the thing seemed right to everyone...to bad that one worker didn't knew about those events, and didn't remove his hat when the carriage with the corpse of the boy passed.

It was war in a second: the Fascists started beating the man senseless, and the other socialists tried to save him. Police intervened, but as said they helped only the Fascists. The next day not only the Popolo d'Italia, but even the people in the streets discussed that the murder was intentional from the beginning, and those red jacket scum wanted to force the industrial to give them his terrains, so they shot his son and they were proud of it.

When the news reached Rome, Nitti had no choice than to condemn the red army's actions to save the trust to the government. This was like giving permission to the Fascist to beat all the workers that occupied the industries at north, like some sort of heroes.
Mussolini was taking way too much power, and the government didn't know what to do.

(OOC: The episode is inspired on a true story that happened in a small city, not Turin. I enlarged the fact to increase the fascist spreading.)

Mexico City, Mexico

The aeroplane landed smoothly at the Mexican capital city, with Joseph Kennedy and his family disembarking, followed by ex-Judge Harry S. Truman. The American criminals were approached on the tarmac by Hermann Goering, a chubby greasy-looking morphine addict from the Luftmarine. Goering nodded and said, "Glad to see you, Herr Kennedy and Herr Truman." He nodded and said and gestured to the Luftmarine plane laying in repose on the tarmac.

Image
Hermann Goering, Air Admiral of the Deutsche Luftmarine, the new air force.

He shook hands with the group and helped them onto the plane before it took off towards Germany. Goering left the plane to his co-pilot and interviewed the refugees. Kennedy was wanted for tax evasion, and Truman was held in responsibility for the death of the governour of Missouri. Goering shook his head and said, "The United States is an immoral republic in which the really rich big companies can easily destroy those who toil away. I'm not a Marxist bastard, but I do understand the people's rights." He nodded and said, "In Germany, each of you will be equal." He grinned at the little baby boy on Joseph's lap and said, "Who's this kleinen Jungen?" Joseph Kennedy said, "This is my son, John Fitzgerald. I'm a bit sad he won't be able to grow up in the United States, but I suppose instead of watching his father rot in prison, he can adapt to a new country, as can I. Ich bin ein Deutscher!" Goering grinned and patted Kennedy's shoulder and said, "Welcome to the German nation at least. You're all to meet with President von Schleiser and President Hitler when we land tommorrow."

Image

"What's the situation, Herr Adenauer?" Hitler said, asking the Foreign Minister, Konrad Adenauer. Konrad nodded and said, "The Kingdom of Italy is dealing with massive revolt between communists and fascists -- Poor bastards," He said, pointing to Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Japan, "The situation in the East is continuing with situation, the Leninists have issued a decree stating that those who move against Russia will be remembered as enemies. Ourselves, being neutral, are believed to have little to no animosity, since it was Germany that let Lenin go to Russia." He said, "Else wise, the White Forces are being crushed at Novosibirsk, and the Entente has pushed into Transamur and Khabarovsk, as Whites and Reds battle it out in Ukraine and Belarus."

Hitler nodded and Thalmann said, "What of domestic?"

Minister of the Interior, Hugo Preuß nodded and said, "Currently, the Stahlhelm's ranks have expanded slightly, but is filling with government-aligned people. The Stahlhelm is effectively a paramilitary wing of the government." He said, "The DAP party has... renamed itself to NSDAP and has formed a group called the Gestapo and SS." Everyone looked at Hitler who said, "I have no dreams of seizing power, gentlemen. The Gestapo and SS are to act in capacity as a state police to prevent revolts." Preuß nodded and said, "And several Rotfront battalions have caused civil unrest in Northern Pommerania and Ostpreußen."

Image
Die Rotfront military march in Ostpreußen's capital city, Koenigsburg

Hitler glared at Thalmann who said, "I'll make sure they're taken care of."

Kurt von Schleiser said, "I want the Rhineland industry kept in check, that's Germany's life line to pay these... terrible reparations."

Field Marshal Hötzendorf pounded his fist on the desk. "We need to ensure the security of the Republic and the Habsburgs! Even you should understand that Archduke!" he demanded shaking his fist at the other man. "I will not condone such a thing Conrad. We are loyal to Austria yes. The legitamising of these troops would be foolish. And undoubtably bring down international condemnation." another man Marshal Krobatin meanwhile then spoke up "Hötzendorf is rght though Austria is weak the Slavic dogs will undoubtably attempt to tear her limb from limb when the time comes. If anything we need to strengthen the military and though they may be illegal soldiers they are loyal to Austria. Thats what counts. However we will need to ensure they don't become to powerful and we need someone to control them." he then began to pace the room. Kövessháza to looked on and then he leaped up "Eureka!" he cried with joy. "What?" the others demandedin unison. The sly old Marshal then smiled "Archduke Eugene is popular amongst the army. He is beloved by the paramilitary and he is also a Habsburg. Perhaps you should take command over them." the Archduke didn't give an approving stare. "No," he stated. "I don't feel that we should legitamise these groups. They need to be demobilized given work. We need men not only to fight for Austria but to build her." he added with a righteous tone.

Hötzendorf however frowned 'There is a compromise. he stated. This compromise will not only grant us these troops. But also keep us on the world stage." he smiled. "What are you proposing Conrad?" Krobatin wondered. "There is currently a civil war in Russia. The Entente has sent troops to Russia. We have a horde of men.Hungry but trained men. I suggest we use them to our advantage. We form a pro-White force the Austrian Legion and I will lead it in the east. They will get paid of course. Many are anti-communist whih means there will be volunteers. And I'm a retired offcer whom has no strings attached." the room gauked at his proposal. However they all had to admit it was tempting. "I'll meet with the government tommorow at the palace. And I'll bring up your proposal Conrad. But know this what you do you do alone in a hostile land." however the willy old Marshal merely nodded before taking his coat and cap and walking out to his car. The group meanwhile had to wonder was he mad or simply genius that was a question that had followed the man since 1914.

Schönbrunn Palace, Jan. 3rd 1919

Field Marshal Alexander von Krobatin stood up this was the moment of truth he thought. "Yesterday we the leaders of the Austrian military reached a possible solution to the paramilitary question," the room then perked up as even Dollfuss seemed to grow taller with intrest. Krobatin then cleared his throat,"MField Marshal Franz Graf Conrad von Hötzendorf retired prosposed we deploy these troops to the east as volunteers on the side of the White Russian army. " the room then broke out incries of disbelief, anger, curiosity and agreement. President seitz then baged the gabble "Order!" he cried and the noise died down. Chancellor Renner then rose "Marshal your colleagues plan how is it a viable solution?" he wondered. Krobatin once more spoke "His plan though it seems doubtfula t first glance is rather smart. The White Army has been asking for international volunteers. As well they will undoubtably pay for the troops. Not all of corse will be sent. But a sizeable amount. This will allow us to demobilize therest. Not to mention the Entenete has supported the Whites. Thus if we assist they may be more lienent."

Dollfuss then stood up "My friends I agree with von Hötzendorf it is a solution. Like the Marshal siad we will not be threatened any longer by the prospect of a paramilitary uprising. We will gain international support. And we will enhance Austrian prestige. However i wonder Marshal whom will lead this expedition if we allow it?" he questioned. Krobatin then spoke yet again "Field Marshal von Hötzendorf has suggested he lead the peration. I understand if you all have doubts. But he is an independent man now. He has military expertise. He is loyal not to mention as a retired commander his actions would be his own." the room however was divided some snarled at the thought others toyed. One man then spoke 'That butcher cost us several blows during the war!" Krobatin then spoke "However sir the marshal aloso is a skilled strategist whom has expertise in offensive warfare which helped us gain huge victories on a front based scale."

The room would remain divided as debate flared over the former marshal. Then one man rose Kurt Schuschnigg one of Dollfuss conies. "I served under the Marshal he is a dilhemma true but he does get results. After all he is a man with a divided record. In the gretaer picture he is a genius his stratedgies result in gains. However in the minor field of battles his stratedgies become bogged down. In truth he can shift fronts in a forces favour. But he can also loose battles. But he is a commander whm has served Austria faithfuly so let him lead. For he is a loyal son of the German race. And a defender of the throne." the room went dead. Then Seitz spoke "All in favour?" with that the motione wa scarried. Seitz then rose. "Marshal inform Herr von Hötzendorf he has his command. "Minister Bauer we have a letter to send." with that the cabinent was adjourned and Austria once more had made a choice her choice.

My Friends in light of the growing paramilitary question. Austria's current weakness and the ever growing Balkan question the Crown Republic of Austria has offers. To send 20,000 Austrian veterans all volunteers to assist the forces of democracy in the east. These troops will be armed by the austrian governemnt. And commanded by Field Marshal Count Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf a highly decorated though retired officer of the former Austro-Hungarian Army. As well we cannot allow the return of the Czechoslovakian Legion to it's native lands. Thus is another reason for our support. Finally we ask  the USA to lessen economic repirations on Austria for her part in the Great War. We await your response.

And I suggest we block their approach. Austria also suggests we share intelligence regarding this nation as they are a threat to the security of Ausria and Poland.

To Austria

To President-Regent Karl Seitz of Austria,

The Republic of Poland is reluctant to accept such an alliance, considering the 123 year partition of our land to a number of other countries, one of them being a predecessor to yours. We do not wish to repeat the events of the past. However, in light of current events, with Bolsheviks bordered to our east and the conflict in Cieszyn, we are willing to accept your proposal of an alliance. That said, it should be noted that we are currently seeking a peaceful solution with Czechoslovakia in regards to Cieszyn, while also hoping that they too will agree to stem the flow of the legionaries to the east. We are currently lacking any amount of resources sufficient to occupy the Czech-Soviet border without avoiding retaliation by the Red Army.

Józef Piłsudski, Chief of State of the Republic of Poland

To Czechoslovakia

To the government of Czechoslovakia,

Poland has noticed your further fortification of Cieszyn. We do not look to invade your territory, but seek a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the problem in the region instead. Interim borders or not, we have Silesian territory in Poland, and we simply wish to exercise the citizens of Poland's right to vote. While we do hope you will allow us to do so, we are willing to negotiate the borders further so that both of our broken homes may benefit.

We would also like to discuss the Bolsheviks. Their border with Poland proves dangerous to our new republic, yet there are reports of Czech legionaries defecting to the Soviet cause. We believe that giving the Red Army manpower will only threaten the independence of all the new nations established after the Great War.

We the Austrian nation understand your sispicion of our nation. However we are on a new path. Like yourself Austria views the Bolsheviks as an enmeny to both our nations. As well we don't seek conflict with Czechoslovakia merely we wish to ensure our own independence. If it would help you the Austrian Legion under Field Marshal Count Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf could be redirected to your own territories. And a joint Austro-Polish force could assist the White Russian forces by dividing Soviet forces. This would allow us all to drive back the Soviet hordes which threaten our lands. As well Austria accepts your proposal of an alliance.
Sincerely President-Regent Karl Seitz,
