The Great Gatsby RP OOC and Signup

Postby Britanania » Tue Sep 25, 2012 1:26 pm

This is an RP based on the famed book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The premise is that Prohibition did not end in 1933, but continues to the Modern Day, changing the look of America and the world. Like the world of Gatsby, most people turn to bootleggers and the like to provide them with alcohol. As such, organised crime led by the Mob is still very prevalent, et cetera, making this RP part character (based on Fitzgerald's characters) and part Mafia, with other elements thrown in.

Nation Name:
Memnoch de Marbulia

Character Name:
Daisy Fay Buchanan

Occupation:
Madame. Runs a brothel.

Bio:
Daisy Fay Buchanan is originally from a good family in Louisville, Kentucky. She is Nick Carraway’s 2nd cousin once removed. After marrying Tom Buchanan, a very rich man, she moves to East Egg, Long Island. She is the mother of a little girl. Daisy is a woman who likes to play with men (13,1.3), she loves to exagorate and extemporize. Most men are fascinated by her (13,1.5), and Daisy enjoys being the center of attention (15,1.9). She also hopes to be liked and popular among the men around her. She wants to impress men including Gatsby by using sophisticated language. She, for example, says: "The pompadour! You never told me you had a pompadour – or a yacht" (72,22f.). Daisy promises more than she gives and oftentimes does not tell the truth (18,1.29).

She has a strong desire for love. Mainly for this reason she married Tom, instead of Gatsby. Since she did not know if Gatsby was to come back from Oxford, she did not want to wait for him any longer. Wanting to be loved is a reason for her superficial behavior and why everything about her is just not real. Especially with Daisy knowing about her husband's infidelity, it is hard for her to change her behavior. Sometimes it can even be seen as cynical. Daisy says about herself: "I'm pretty cynical about everything" (18,9f.). You can see that she does not really love her husband Tom and is not happy because of her near divorce from Tom (60). “Sometimes she gets foolish ideas in her head and doesn’t know what she’s doing” (96,25f).

Furthermore Daisy is careless person which you can see in her behavior when she has the hit-and-run accident in which Myrtle Wilson (Tom's mistress) is killed. Being used to getting young men's attention, she has learned to think only of herself no matter whether other people get hurt or not. Another reason for marrying Tom rather than Gatsby is because material things have a great importance to her. She was always “crying for a decision” (109,24) and wanted her life to be “shaped” (109,24). Tom was the one who bought her love with a $ 300,000 necklace. He can give her all the luxury Daisy needs for living. Even her voice “is full of money” (89,8). Nick says that Daisy's voice "couldn't be over-dreamed" (74,4). Her voice is "a deathless song" (74,4).

She is in love with Jay Gatsby.

I'd like to join in as well if you don't mind

Nation Name: Western Coalition

Character Name: R. T. Rawls

Occupation: Ex-Police Officer, officially working as a Private Investigator.

Bio:
Richard Travis Rawls was born in Huntington, Pennsylvania into a large, well off family. As the eldest of three children, he had planned to go to College, and Law School, but dropped out in order to serve his country in the service. Easiest said, the rigors of war changed Richard's personality profoundly, and while a great solider on the battlefield, and a winner of many a medal of merit, he was dishonorably discharged after repeated offences (disorderly conduct, assaulting superior officers, insubordination, etc.) on leave or during heated combat within the service. The final straw was the accused murder of one PFC. Stephen J. Waters, a subordinate member of Rawls unit. Never proven fully and with Rawls pleading Innocent, claiming that Waters ran away from combat in cowardice, it was dumb down to manslaughter, with Rawls spending most of his time in a chain gang.

After his ordeal, with little money to his name, a broken career, and a spent up college fund, Richard turned to the same institution most of his own family served as. A policeman. While showing himself to be an exceptional keeper of the peace, a run of bad luck and unorthodox methods of interrogating suspects and apprehending criminals led him to being put on indefinite leave. With not enough money to spread around any more, Richards is sometimes forced to work with the scurvier people around the city. Helping liquor to be smuggled in returns a nice profit. So with a dead end career in law enforcement, and a lousy paying P.I. job, something has to be done to pay the rent.

Character Appearance:Image

Misc. Info

As an experienced combat veteran, Richard is not handicapped in his proficiency with any weapons at his disposal be it a handgun or a hand grenade.

While he exudes a cool, uncaring exterior and an all business mindset, one can guess a tumult of emotional and physiological actions and ideas resides under his cover.

Not to be overly pendantic but to be a billionaire in 1922 would demand Rockefeller'esque wealth. Most likely Gatsby's fortune would have to be counted in millions not billions.
